Anyone read the books? I'm on 2nd and it's a bit boring

This movie is sooooo boring, Ive tried to watch it when its shown on tv and I can never watch more than a half hour of it. It has no story, no legitimate tactics, no interesting characters, its just a bad tv docudrama that somehow got made into a movie.

I say this as someone who loves naval military history in the age of sail.

I am also on the second book and it definitely takes a while to get going. They don't get out to sea until halfway through the book, and once they do it's in a really shitty ship.
It's pretty worth it for the further character development of Jack Aubrey and Steven Maturin.
The best scene so far is JA being led by SM across the Spain border having to impersonate a circus bear by hiding in its skin to avoid arrest at French checkpoints and nearly dying from exhaustion in the process.
They're still 18 books to go in the series so I wouldn't worry about a lull in the storyline. I think they're great reads so far.

It's a good point. The lantern decoy and the whale ship disguise were fun. But they're also pretty silly.

We didn't really get to see any proper period maneuvering.

The only thing that was wrong was that the crew would have been the best of the best. A successful cruising captain like Aubrey would be fighting off experienced sailors with a stick because the prize money was to good to pass up.

Right, real, silly events, that did not represent typical period battles.

Let me give you an example, during the Guadalcanal campaign, both japanese submarines and american destroyers routinely patrolled ironbottom sound at night, when air support couldn't operate. The jap subs for intelligence and clandestine purposes, the destroyers to sink the former.

Now in one particular incident, the commander of a jap sub was famous with his crew for his fencing skills. He had won awards, had a fancy katana, etc. Well one night, both his sub and a US destroyer are out, pitch black, zero visibility, etc and they collide with one another.

The jap commander, realizing they've been rammed, and mistakenly thinking they're being boarded, grabs is katana and races out on deck to fight the boarders hand to hand. The American commander, not knowing if they've struck a reef or something else, orders a reverse, then realizes it was a jab sub, orders full forward to ram it a second time. The U.S. destroy collides with the sub a second time, at just the right moment to send the commander flying off into the ocean, swinging his katana around, screaming banzai.

Great story, funny scene if it were in a movie, but very atypical.

Cannon drilling was great. Would have liked to see more seamanship. Course I understand why they didn't, that's expensive, but still...
