Tbqh I didn't get the film either but that is because I dismissed it as another Refn movie with weird style and didn't bother to put thought into it.
On the other hand I am not paid to review movies, so yeah...
However isn't that a sort of philosophical matter of aesthetics? Does the artist's intention count at all when his intention doesn't come off to some people? Rotten tomatoes and its top critics review films not as art but as entertainment, they just sometimes rate down flicks for the illusion of decency and just criticique. TND is certainly not entertaining to the middle-brow. This review is for them, the average movie goer and it's negativity is justified to me.
Now why anyone would be dumb enough to not dismiss such critic when reading such a dumb review is beyond me... I keep wondering how do the sites that hire these critics even survive and what visitors they have...
