Maybe "big deal" wasn't the best choice of words because obviously it's not as bad as it could be, but all writing related to gender-swapping regenerations has failed to treat it as a normal part of Time Lord society. They've all been written from something closer to the audience's perception, as a shocking/surprising occurrence.

As for the EDAs novels: Moffat lifted a lot of his timey-wimey stuff from the novels, especially the EDAs, especially Larry Miles' first two EDAs. And if there's an overall point to the EDAs, it's that in a world with time travel, history won't be consistent, and in a world with time wars, even personal histories won't be consistent.

In the novels, even the unaired pilot is canon. It's just canon about history that isn't part of history anymore. But the Doctor might still remember it at times, just like Rory still remembers being an Auton even though it never happened (a speech that Eight gave to Trix long before Eleven gave it to Amy).

The figures in the article are misleading. I know it's a cliche, but the final viewing figures are what count, not necessarily the overnights.

Average FINAL viewing figures have remained fairly constant, peaking at an average 8.04m per episode for series 4 and 8.4m for series 8.

The role of the Doctor is a grueling one. 9-10 months of long hours per day filming each series, then promotional work/ interviews/ conventions to attend. Months at a time away from family and friends. Plus the role is a very 'physical', Tennant, Smith and Capaldi all injured themselves during filming. (Capaldi needed 5 months to recover from knee surgery last year).
