8 1/2 is the most meta film ever created, it describes Fellini's own struggles in the framework of beautiful camera-work and a self critical story-piece. Lost in translation is a very nuanced and refined look into the "culture shock" epidemic that so many people face, all while having this ambiance to it that makes it extremely comfy. Bladerunner is literally a Nietzsche-based look of a decrepit world with beautiful set design, amazing character interaction, and complex moral dilemmas. Seven samurai is a comfy movie that describes brotherly honor and has a lot of tension behind its sequence of events, not to mention its comfy for me because I remember watching it multiple times when I was a kid, and wanting to play samurai afterwards. Take your pleb opinions and fuck off.

Welp, time to defend myself.

In terms of Synecdoche, after the first few minutes, around when the girl buys the house that's on fire the film's charm kind of wears off, as is ignores the plot it sets up to focus on shitty symbols and unrelated points such as the girl in Germany and her stupid art. The lowest point of the film is when Hoffman's character is taking a shit, which I reckon shows the esteem the director holds the audience in - You're stupid enough to pay for this? I'm going to show you someone taking a shit and wiping his arse.

Then we have the final third of the film - the life sized play, which, while a great concept, and delivers some fantastic camerawork, is poorly executed and left me not caring for any of the characters or their tenuous connections with each other.

As an art film trying to masquerade as a film with deep and meaningful symbols and imagery, it fails at every turn by introducing ideas and never following up with them. The burning house is an example. Is it symbolic? Very probably. Does the director follow it up in a meaningful way? No, the house burns down and the character dies with minimal impact on anything, rendering it useless.

The film fails on two levels, in terms of plot having a meaningless story, and a symbolic one too

In terms of my films, Holy Motors, is it wank? Yeah, it probably is, but does it try to cover this in a layer of pretentiousness and faux-symbolism? I don't believe so. It's a celebration of the strange and weird.

Holy Mountain is probably closer to what I criticise about Synecdoche, however what I like about it is the absolutely beautiful construction of the sets, shots and colours of the film, which in my opinion allow the director to get away with his bullshit religious motifs for the majority of the film.

I don't really think that Moon is that much of a wanky film, as it's plot driven for the most part, and doesn't really fall into the same category and the same with Kim Ki-duk

A good top 10 list balances the plebeian with the pretentious. 10 MCU films is far too plebeian, and 10 Japanese films from the 1950s is far too pretentious.
The best thing to do is be honest. What do you enjoy watching? What do you enjoy showing other people? What makes you feel something when you watch it?
