Also elves aren't actually 'immortal', they just don't die the same way as humans. They fade and linger for as long as Arda still exists. Middle Earth is set in prehistoric Earth and the idea is that elves still live on Earth, but they faded so much that they're invisible.

Many of them never even reached the undying lands; some quit the journey while others never started.
