Hollywood and the press love nothing more than themselves.
So whenever I see a movie about some filmmaker, writer, actor, journalist, etc. acting heroic or braving adversity or something, I smell oscar bait.

Obvious bonus points if the adversity involves racial issues and/or sticking it to the man.

Crash. The most shamelessly obvious Oscar bait ever and it worked. They won.

Race, homophobia, slavery.

At this point you have movies that are literally trying to guilt the academy into nominating them solely based on the fact that they are about social issues. It's depressing.
