That's one thing I noticed that sets this apart from Django or Basterds, even Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill. The direction is much more simple, and much more understated. Making homages to other genres doesn't make a good movie. The story needs to have flow and a theme. Star Wars was an homage to the classic pulp fiction comics and swashbuckling adventure movies of the 30s. It has a traditional story format that is hard to mess up and has a traditional theme of good always conquers evil. Both are common themes in what Star Wars is paying homage to.
