For me, the biggest issue is that it comes off as incredibly lazy. Like, Hathaway's character is named Debbie Ocean, it just comes off as fanfic tier 'female version of the male character from the original, their names even sound the same!'.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with making an Ocean's movie that is mostly or all female, but this seems less like having a good reason to make a spinoff (Damon's character is the only returning one from the Clooney movies) and more like 'we need to attach a known name to this product'.

The Intern was decent, with De Niro carrying the film, it made over 4x it's budget, so it did relatively well. Her team is probably telling her to keep being the lead in films, as slipping into that supporting role will kill compensation. Taking an ensemble role is an acceptable compromise.
