Kevin Spacey is the kind of actor that appeals to pseudo-intellectuals who like to think they know about film and television. He's really no different to the actors they criticize for being shit, but he isn't popular enough for most people to recognize, and I guess that's they reason for his appraisal. Even the people who praise him as a "good" actor haven't really seen him in most of films.
Spacey gives laughable performances in most of his recent work: (21, K-Pax, Casino Jack, 9 Lives, House of Cards, Horrible Bosses)
Even in some of his older films his performance borders on over dramatic (see American Beauty, Big Kahuna, Swimming with Sharks).
