the witch is actually the woods.
this thing is just some random monster they put into the movie because they thought the audience is too stupid to be scared by something as stubtle as being lost in the woods.

>>
>>78916765
have you seen the original? the movie is not about some monster. the 'blair witch' is just a name for an entity that is believed to be living in the woods, when in reality it's the woods themselves that are evil.
>>
>>78916947
That's literally never implied in the movie Jesus Christ just stop posting anytime.
>>
>>78916316
The "there is no witch" angle is far more interesting. Shame.
>>
>>78916947

the original is one of my favorite horrors of all time.

i just think the point of blair witch project isn't about what's causing it. it clearly operates outside the rules of reality. that's literally all that matters. it makes no difference if it's a witch or if it's the woods or whatever.
>>
I don't think Elly Kedward was ever an actual witch. I think she was just another victim of whatever evil was already there, like Rustin Parr
>>
>>78916947
the woods are cursed by a real witch. that is stated directly in the movies.

How long till they remake Book of Shadows? I'd like to see them do a Cabin in the Woods type thing with it. It has a ton of good ideas but it's shit.

that's the real genius of the original. we literally see nothing for the entire movie. the unknown is far more scary than some stupid witch monster.

>>

he's talking about the stupid light outside of the cabin. looked like straight out of a x-files alien abduction episode.
>>

oh yeah, that was in the trailer. Made me think of the x-files as well, when Mulder is in that factory / mine in the second season I think.
Is there a link to a theory on that? could save the movies for me, I hated em both except for when that girl was snapped in half. That was a cool vfx shot.
>>
>>78916316
Kinda crazy that every death is shown on screen in this movie and it's still less intense than the first one. Doesn't help all the deaths are lame as shit (tree falling on a guy, chick falling from a tree, people just getting grabbed and pulled off camera). Best kill was shown in the trailers.

You don't see anything in the first one. Hearing the guy screaming in the distance is so much more effective than showing him actually getting his teeth pulled out.

looks like the took something from the original design
>>
>>78917396
I sincerely believe they were just making shit up. the original is way too subtle for a modern audience, so of course we had to have a monster and our characters literally being trapped in a neverending night alternate dimension with random spooky stuff going on.
>>
>>78917396
I think they were showing how the witch could manipulate time. When the couple gets lost earlier they say they've been gone for days even though it's only been like an hour. I took the flashing lights as a rapid day/night cycle.
>>
>>78917504
>chick falling from a tree

what was it with that thing she pulled out of her leg? went nowhere and was never explained.
>>

>>
>>78916611

>>
I think I watched 10 minutes of the new BW and then turned it off.

That's fucking stupid. What scared people originally was that it was an unknown entity. Especially the end scene for people who paid attention in the beginning.

Giving it a face doesn't make it scary.

>>
>>78917614

>Bruh...it's been 20 years, do you think she's been living in the woods for 20 goddamn years?

>Ok, let's go, we're all on board with this.

That was weird as hell. And the movie sucked shit too.
>>
>>78917109

I'm probably the oldest anon ITT.

The original film had one of, if not the first, online viral campaigns.

They uploaded short clips of people in the woods, documentary style. They also had the Blair Witch website which was just one page with the Blair Witch symbol and some nonsense.

The media claimed it was dangerous, and there was even a police investigation into the clips+website.

God yes, that meta shit pissed me off so much.

What that one anon said about making shit up is true: the leg root, the time distortion, the voodoo, the pointless climbing of the tree, the goofy tall monster, the lights, the pointless scene in the tunnel, the shittiest twist of all TIME, etc.

Some of those are good ideas, but together it's just one big mess of unintelligent fuck you that could have been any generic horror movie. In fact, it might have even worked better as The Woods and you could play an angle where these woods have a bunch of traditional horror elements all combined, and that's where people get their lore from.

This is literally why The Blair Witch is one of the best horror movies ever made. It's a real scenario: you're lost in the woods. Then rednecks start fucking with you and probably mean to rape and kill you, meanwhile the whole reason you are there in the first place is to investigate supernatural phenomenon, but the movie never steps out and explains what's happening. Even the climactic last scene could be supernatural, or hick murderers. The sequel clearly didn't get that, or thought it wasn't marketable and just made a trashy monster flick.

According to director Wingard and writer Barret:

>They never intended to show the witch
>They were too dumb to realize that anything you show is going to be interpreted as the witch and people are going to be annoyed about it
>James and Lane were originally going to debate the origins of the witch to show that nobody truly knows how an urban legend is supposed to play out (even though Lane and his girlfriend basically did this anyway.)
>Again, never occurred to them that people thought they would show the witch
>Start to tease they showed a bit about how the witch gets her sacrifices to keep the huntings going, but then
>Admit they're "never going to make a sequel to explain any of this shit."
>There's hidden subplots you have to know the occult to understand (yeah ok.)
>The tunnel was a real set piece the actress was trapped in between her stunt double and the camera man.
>Only CGI in the film was touchups to the backgrounds. The monster is apparently 100% practical (yeah, ok, bullshit.)
>Peter never died, but he's stuck in the house because no sequel.

>"You know what, you're not going to get an explanation for these lights. Because you didn't come see this movie opening weekend, so now you're going to have to fucking wonder what's going on out there."

I agree with him. I struggle to think of anything that comes close to immersing you into a believable and horrifying situation. There are lots of "high brow" horror movies but they're all arty and shit

Relating to this line of thought, I unironically think Funny Games is one of the best horror movies of the past decade or so (too lazy to Google the orig release date).

While certainly stylized, the basic premise is so believable: seemingly-normal and friendly people talk to you in broad daylight for a bit and then just...don't leave. And then it turns out they want to torture/kill you, and it's too late for you to stop them. Frightening thought.
>>
>>78928108
some production intern lurked /x/ and told them some retarded story he remembered and they put a reference to it in the movie somewhere
>>
>>78917219
That was a mistake. You were supposed to see the witch in the movie but it didn't make it on film.

>The Blair Witch was supposed to be seen in the movie. As the characters were running out of their tent, Heather yells, "Oh my God, what The f*** is that? What the f*** is that?" The cameraman was supposed to pan to the left were the audience would briefly see a woman wearing a white gown in the distance. But the cameraman forgot to pan to the left and the scene was not reshot.

Also, the movie was originally twice as long as it was now - the first part was the movie we see, the stuff in the woods. The second part was a mockumentary detailing how the footage was found and made into the movie we saw.

In the canon of the movie, the footage of the kids was found in 100 year old dirt that had been untouched, under the foundation of that old house they were in.

The second part of the movie was removed, cut up, and put onto the original website of the blair witch project to hype up the movie a year before release. You can still see some of the old clips on the old website from the 90s. It's quite neat.

The whole point of the movie is that there IS something supernatural hunting them out there but budget, circumstance and ingenuity made them make a movie that was a little cleverer than normal.

>>
>>78928237
Yeah I liked that too, might be worth watching the original. It's shot for shot the same as the remake but its naturally sort of grittier and low budget and foreign which gives it a spookier vibe IMO. The guys in the remake just look like the creepiest fucking dudes that its kind of obvious
>>
>>78928315
Samefag again. That was pretty neat! I liked the track a lot too, gonna have to hear some more. Great rec my man.
>>
>>78916316
pretty spoopy 2bh be honest with you
>>
>>78928347
Jacobs Ladder, Eraserhead, Rosemarys Baby, Exorcist, Posession, stuff like that

I mean I can enjoy and get spooked by that type of thing but with Blair Witch it's authentic, grounded real life horror unlike anything else

It really grinds my gears that considering the fuckload of found footage movies BWP inspired not a single one of them even tried to be as authentic and believable.
>>
>>78928397
It's not quite a shot for shot remake... the US version is almost 10 minutes longer.

There's also some stuff that's different between versions.

One line that's left out of the US version is when Paul looks at the camera during the knife/prayer game and says something like "why stop now? the film hasn't even reached feature length yet."
I'm not sure why he cut that out of the movie.

Funny Games is one of my favourite movies ever.
>>
>>78928397
Yeah I've watched both--actually didn't even know about the fact the U.S. one was a remake until like two years later. I still usually show my friends the U.S. one just to make it more accessible for them.

>insert 'Amerifats can't read subtitles' joke here
>>
>>78928492
Why do you like it so much? I mean I enjoyed it but there was definitely something I was missing, I didn't/still don't get what the director was trying to convey with the fourth wall stuff beyond "violence is too glamorized in movies"

Maybe that is the whole point? Not necessarily a bad thing, I agree with the message
>>
>>78928482
It's cheap to make and easy to sell, so people making FF don't really have to work on constructing something actually intelligent and with quality
>>
>>78928586
First, I like it cause its unique.

Second, it subverts many tropes and the viewer's expectations in almost every way.

The director's point was with us not really the violence. The movie is not supposed to be enjoyed... its not intended to be a horror film, either. It is intended to annoy and upset the average person who watches it. His point is that you are watching this family get tortured and you can save them any time by turning it off, but you're too focused on being entertained and waiting to see what happens because its a movie, even though you hate it. This is why Paul keeps talking with you and making bets... this is why the people are killed in the order they are... this is why there are games... he knows you're watching, and he's only doing this stuff because he knows you're still there.

I just love how nicely everything fits together and I love why he did everything.

>>
>>78924188
It's not good because of the vagueness, it's good because of what it omits (death footage) and doesn't force down your throat. LOST, Prometheus, and whatever Lindelof touches apart from that are vague pieces of shit because it raises mysteries and never solves them. Blair Witch just has the witch mystery, and the horror is implied to be because of the witch. The end where they face the wall was reminiscent of the earlier story with the children getting killed, the loose ends were tied up (save for the tape eventually being found). It's not high brow, it's delivered in such a way that its creepiness and horror are at their maximum. I like it cause it's not pretentious as fuck like foreign artfag shit or things are intentionally left out of an otherwise normal plot (like post-Lindelof Prometheus). Kids, teens, and retards may not like its slow pace or the fact that you have to pay attention to get the full effect.

I read somewhere that it's meant to be Heather, on the argument that the witch kept her as a slave the same way she kept that child killer guy during the first film.

Doesn't explain why she looks like that though.

I don't believe that they intended for that monster not to be the witch. I think they just backpeddled hard when they saw how much the fans hated that they showed the witch. Why have the story in the beginning about how they heard the Blair Witch was tied to the tree and stretched her limbs out if the monster with elongated limbs wasn't the Blair Witch? They're retards if they didn't expect every single member of the audience to think that was the Blair Witch. If they hadn't told that story in the beginning of the film then it'd be a different story.

Remember all the shills creating threads about this movie before it was released? Well, I was one of those shills. I got paid $100 bucks by Room 101 to create one thread per day on here. I don't know how many we were but we must've been at least 10 people on here getting paid to do it. I just want to say I'm sorry. The movie is by far the worst horror film I've seen in recent years. But I needed the money.
