Watched it yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. For an Oscar-sweeping movie about a gay black man there was basically zero social commentary. The characters felt really developed and it was interesting to see how their lives shaped them as they got older.
I do agree that the ending sucked though. There are good times for lack of resolution but it just made me think "wait, that's it?"

Jenkins has some skill in getting performances from his actors, but as a storyteller and cinematic craftsman, on the basis of this movie he's amateurish. This movie, like Boyhood, didn't really have anything to say. The boy is uninteresting and remains so as a teen and young man, and the sensitive mounting of the issue of his sexuality doesn't inherently make the movie more valuable as an artistic endeavor.

The film is just fundamentally a weak story that's being overly commended because of its managing to present characters not frequently portrayed onscreen (a decent man who's a successful drug dealer, a black inner-city youth with homosexual leanings, a bad mother who's not a monster, etc. - all very interesting potentially, but not so much in the service of drama this mundane and superficially developed).

Okay, so what do you want him to do. Chiron was raised in poverty, didn't graduate high school, spent time in juvie, and ended up becoming a drug dealer because of Juan's influence as a father figure, the pressures of the environment he was raised in, and because he had little choice. Did you want a montage of him having a sudden realization of this, applying to be an engineer, and getting accepted? Would that have seriously made the movie better?

There is no "torture porn" aspect to the movie because many of the events in Chiron's life feel natural. It is unsurprising that his mother ended up being addicted to drugs while they lived in Florida. It's unsurprising that he gets bullied in school and ends up becoming the way he is. These are all things that are grounded in reality and could have very well happened to a person in real life, they don't feel like contrived obstacles made out of thin air just to torture the protagonist. If anything, his life magically changing and improving in spite of his background would come off as more oscarbaity.

A character who is made to suffer and then suffers more and by the end of the movie is still suffering is boring to me. Tragedies should be filled with moments of light, even if it's just the beginning, before devolving into suffering. For me this movie did not have that, it was just an exhibition of suffering and nothing more. Even if he just left his environment with the HOPES of finding something better that would have been better than the submission to eternally bearing his cross.

I don't really have much more to say on the matter.

This is wrong. Chiron DOES change to an extent- he becomes a buff, macho drug dealer, even though that doesn't fit with his more introverted and meek personality. Kevin even comments on this and how his appearance doesn't really fit him. The environment Chiron was raised in led to him crafting an external image of himself that doesn't fit with who he is inside. This is a recurring theme in the movie- Juan is also a buff, macho drug dealer even though in reality he's a much gentler person, Kevin gets pressured into hurting Chiron even though deep inside he is very fond of him, etc.

But there were. In the beginning Chiron found a father figure in Juan who was willing to take care of him, even though his mother was abusive. I wouldn't be surprised if you came into this movie with preconceived notions that it would be torture porn simply because it was about a gay black character, instead of actually paying attention to what you were watching.
