That is not true, the basic theme of Neon Demon is the way we behave towards beautiful people, with Jesse being the object of the other characters' actions and each character representing a different way of dealing with beauty. Where do you get the idea of the film being about the drive for fame and status from?

The fact that it is the only thing Elle's friends think and care about. And the whole character developement of Elle is driven by her success. And the entire plot is revolved around that same theme, as is the "twist" in the end.

This film started off so strong, then it got shit, then it became a comedy

But that's not true, the only thing Jesse's friends care about is Jesse. Dean is in "love" with her and thinks she is more than a beautiful face (which in the context of the story she absolutely is not), Ruby is sexually obsessed with her and befriends her in hopes of getting into her pants, the clerk sees her as a purely sexual object for him to use, the models see her as rivalry and in the end as a means of becoming more beautiful themselves. The agent in the beginning establishes her as a person of extraordinary beauy and Robert the fashion designer serves as an expert of beauty, being aware of Jesse's power over other people as demonstrated by him pointing out the flaws in Dean's thinking and utilizing her for his own profit by having her headline his fashion show. As for Jesse's arc, she remains an object of characters' actions throughout the film, she is at no point agentive in any way. The only difference is that after the fashion show and its magic triangle moment she becomes arrogant about it. It is so obviously not about her drive for fame and status and for the other characters (and only two of them) it only becomes apparent toward the end, after killing Jesse. Up to that point it's about an empty shallow hull of a character whose only characteristic is her outward beauty becoming a hate-worthy arrogant person through the actions of other characters motivated by their desire for her caused by her outward beauty. Everything in this film is about beauty and archetypal ways in which we deal with it.
