It was a different time

Does anyone know the name of a Japanese film from the '90s which stars an idol who made her name in the '80s? It's set in Africa, and it's basically a glorified nature documentary. The director said that he began to hate mankind, so he wanted humans to have as little to do with the film possible.

Really weird movie. Half the time the characters speak in Engrish since the cast is a mix of Jap, Chinese and some Arab-looking dudes.

I'm on the fence about it. On the one hand there's almost nothing like it (a multicultural dystopian sci-fi drama directed by a Jap), on the other hand I wasn't that into it when I watched it. Some parts dragged along, which didn't help since it's 2 and a half hours long. It's something that would need several viewings to appreciate fully.
