The movie is about marriage and spousal abuse. That's why the child sees murder because he's so scared. The husband works a menial, boring, dead-end job "all work and no play makes jack a dull boy". Because the male, head of the family is so unfulfilled and frustrated he takes out his anger on the only people he can - - his family.

The ghosts are just the people around the man he meets during his life. He always imagines a better life, but he can never achieve.
