Terminator was completely wrapped up with a perfectly contained story. Every bit of it made sense in its own universe. Time travel was handled consistently. Terminator was actually intimidating and scary.

Just the inclusion of the plot to T2 destroyed continuity and the entire concept of the way time travel works in the series. It's still a good, simple action movie, but T1 was groundbreaking scifi/action/horror and it combined all those elements while nailing each one.
