There's a great anecdote from one of McTiernan's mentor while he was in film school. All the students were asked to analyze a scene from I can't remember which Fellini film, 8 and a half I think, and try and explain why the scene ended the way it did. All the other students wrote long texts, looking for intellectual meaning and symbols and missed the point. McTiernan just said "it's the coda" and understood it was a matter of film language and musical rythm. If only more action filmmakers - or filmmakers in general - were as film literate and brilliantly intuitive as him, maybe the action genre wouldn't be so awful. But because his films are so popular, he doesn't get the respect he deserves.
