I didn't feel emotionally blackmailed with this film because I'm not American, so I'm not "supposed" to feel guilty over what happened, but I get why some people would feel that way.

I cried at the ending. First time I watched the film I was 19, had a little sister who was 4. I've never been more angry at a character in a film. He could have gone and grovelled to his aunt, begged her to come back or at least take his sister back, but he didn't, and she died. I was absolutely furious, to a ridiculous degree.

Thing is, as I said I was quite old when I saw the film, older than the main character. The part that probably struck me the most was that, were I his age, 12 or 13 or however old he was, I might have done the same thing. I might have been just as prideful and arrogant and desperate to have fun as he was, and it probably would have gotten my sister killed.

That's actually the bit that crushed me, I think. That I'd have made the same mistakes. I'm not angry at the character, I'm angry and disgusted at myself. I don't think any other film has ever evoked that kind of emotional response in me.
