I didn't feel emotionally blackmailed with this film because I'm not American, so I'm not "supposed" to feel guilty over what happened, but I get why some people would feel that way.

I cried at the ending. First time I watched the film I was 19, had a little sister who was 4. I've never been more angry at a character in a film. He could have gone and grovelled to his aunt, begged her to come back or at least take his sister back, but he didn't, and she died. I was absolutely furious, to a ridiculous degree.

Like he'd get absolutely drunk and kick me out of the house but then he'd try to commit suicide because of feeling guilty about our relationship.

I'd be so furious with him because in my opinion at the time it felt like it was all his fault but the man was clearly damaged.

Thing is, as I said I was quite old when I saw the film, older than the main character. The part that probably struck me the most was that, were I his age, 12 or 13 or however old he was, I might have done the same thing. I might have been just as prideful and arrogant and desperate to have fun as he was, and it probably would have gotten my sister killed.

That's actually the bit that crushed me, I think. That I'd have made the same mistakes. I'm not angry at the character, I'm angry and disgusted at myself. I don't think any other film has ever evoked that kind of emotional response in me.

True Story: I saw Steven Spielberg at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Eh, Iron Giant did it better.

Personally I found his breakdown in the garage more moving, because he finally comes to terms with his brother's death.

Shame the film has to spend time on the other characters though.

That movie just made me break down several times the first time watching it. On a rewatch you see how the writing was kind of annoying but man, scenes between Penn and Fanning are still solid.

I didn't cry but Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance is probably the bleakest movie I've ever seen, especially the ending

I remember being so distraught by these moments in the theatre.

There were a lot of movies featuring devastating scenes from last year. The endings of Indignation and The Wailing are about the worst things I can imagine happening to someone who once had such a happy life. The Light Between Oceans, which wasn't even that great of a movie, had such a beautiful ending and final shot that it moved me powerfully. Don't get me started on A Monster Calls, not even a particular scene, just the whole movie leading up to the final act.

What's gonna emotionally wreck me this year anons?
