I dunno, man. None of the live-action Jokers have ever really managed to encompass the totality of the Joker. Nicholson's was goofy but not quite convincing on the sociopathic side. I think the potential was there but they just didn't explore it much.

Ledger's performance felt pretty flat to me. They captured the madness but not really the "fun" side of the Joker. He came off as just a regular run of the mill Hollywood homicidal villain in purple and green rather than the actual Joker.

To put it another way, Nicholson's Joker was believable as a guy that would modify joke shop toys to be lethal but just wasn't quite convincing that he was actually out to do any real harm. Ledger's Joker was believable as a guy that wanted to fuck things up, but lacked the panache of a someone that would use chattering teeth that could actually take chunks of your flesh, acid-squirting lapel flowers, and cigars that would actually blow your head apart. Neither of them successfully embodied a character that wanted to take the tools and imagery of things that were intended bring lightness and laughter to the world and use them as a vehicle to instill chaos and fear.

Don't know what to say about Leto since I haven't seen enough of it to see where they'll really go, but I have a feeling it'll just be deeper down the dark Ledger rabbit hole.

In the end, it may be that the Joker is simply too complex a character to portray in the span of two or three hours. Depictions such as in Batman: TAS have the advantage of exploring the character over multiple episodes and showing different sides of him that the viewer can put together into a picture of the whole.
