Roland (Elba) is the main character. To fulfil his destiny, he has to draw some people from our world to his. One is another white guy, Eddie. Later, he draws a black woman, Odetta, who is in a wheelchair because she lost both her legs below the knees.

Odetta is from the time fo the civil rights movement in the USA, and was big on peaceful and nonviolent protests. She ALSO has a split personality called Detta, who is a violent, criminal and very racist towards whites. She (Detta) tries multiple times to kill Roland and Eddie because she thinks the "Honky Mahfaks" are trying to poison her (they're not). Eventually, Roland forces her into a mental confrontation with herself, creating a baanced third personality called Susannah.

It's not as huge a part of the story as sme people are making out, but it's the main part of Odetta/Detta/Susannah's characterisation. Other than that, I can't think of anything other than Eddia frequently saying that Roland looks like Clint Eastwood.

I think it was Roland (or could have been Eddie) that explains That they think that Detta's personality is a fabrication. One she made up to cover up her true cunning and ferocity. At one point she even hog ties Eddie and chokes him out while a bunch of lobster monsters come and almost eat him.

The casting makes no sense since Roland is lean and gets more and more gaunt from his endless questing.

Elba, while a very good actor, is rather buff and stocky so it doesn't really add up, especially since I doubt he plans to lose 60+ lbs for the role to look the part.

Not to mention that he's not really someone who comes to mind when you think of an arthurian gunslinger.

At this point Viggo, who's getting old and weathered would be a good choice for it.
