It's not so much wanting a character that's a worthless loser as it is wanting a character that has limitations and not sudden matrix powers. Being perfect at everything is part of what makes superman fucking boring and why he's often more interesting as a villain.

This. I actually think the first quarter of the movie is tense and atmospheric. From the intro; all the way up until the Stars team rolls in and they head down into the hive. Then, pretty much all of that is lost almost immediately. From then on it turns into a watered down Aliens more or less. Aside from the foreboding mood that was discarded; it doesn't even manage to pass the torch to a gorefest approach at the very least. It was very light really, I can't believe this was the same guy who did Event Horizon. Why'd he hold back so badly?
