REMEMBER THE ROCINANTE edition
>>
I haven't seen episode 5 yet. Is it good as the earlier episodes?

I fear that the Expanse, like other Syfy shows, runs the risk of taking a decent premise and crashing and burning in a pile of shit.
>>
>>64588802

I think it's getting even better. The pacing is great in episode 5.
>>
>>64588844
I can't deal with the fucking ending. When is next episode?
>>
>>64588736
>dat mormon temple on top.

not watched episode 5 yet. Perhaps that what i will do.
>>
Really liked 5, makes me wish they'd again released a batch of 4 episodes.
>>
>>64588802
Reading the book right now. It actually gets better and better. If they managed to make the first few episodes good I can't see how they would screw up the next ones.
>>
>>64590423
well they somewhat messed up 1 and 2, which is a shame, but luckily they got back on track with 3 through 5.

I somewhat wish they'd done a better job with the initial episodes as this will most likely turn people off and scifi television as a whole could really use something good right now.
>>
>>64590528
How exactly did they mess up those episodes? I thought they were very good, exceedingly better than most of the shit we're getting on TV.
>>
>>64590528
Yeah they were bad but the source material is also shit early
>>
>>64591033
true
>>
>>64588736
Just watched episode 5.

Actually nice little bottle episode to save cash after spending a ton for 3 and 4. They did Anderson station nicely and it going to be curious on how they move some of the plot forward.

That said, they did a lot of name dropping for Eros

Also

they have 4 episodes to do Eros, Troth station, the dead space, Getting the Rocinante refitted, and finding Mao (Twice) Curious how they are going to make it work.
>>
>>64592706
Maybe they'll split Leviathan Wakes into two series? That would give them plenty of space to do the Eros stuff.
>>
>>64592874
That would be cool, but what would be the final for season 1?
>>
>>64593011
Maybe they have the finale where Miller and Holden first meet, and then show Julie after the protomolecule got her, and then next season kicks in with the main Eros incident?
>>
>>64593011
I think finale will be the escape from Eros
>>
>>64593114
True, and that would make more sense pace wise.

episode 6 - Rocinante crew deal with fred, Miller gets OPAed
Episode 7 - miller gets fired for following Julie instead of getting the near cop killer , Crew looks for the Anubis
Episode 8 - Annubis, earth stuff
Episode 9 - Rocinante heads to Eros, Miller heads to Eros to follow julie case.
Episode 10 - Holden miller meet, Earth Mars goes to war, last scene is Julie going into the shower with the protomolecule growths
>>
>>64593248
I don't know if they'll be able to do justice to Eros in the space they have available. I think we still have about an episode before Miller leaves Ceres. The escape from Eros will be at least an episode, and finding Julie on Eros will probably be an episode or so. If we have four episodes left, that doesn't leave much room.
>>
>>64593365
I think this is the way it goes. No Earth/Mars in episode 5 as well, so probably saving that drama for later
>>
oh, is this the series based on those books about the vomit zombies

I stopped reading when I got to the vomit zombies
>>

so I'm hopeful.

>>
>>64593605
>>64593715
I really was not impressed. I mean, really, fucking zombies? That's the best they could come up with? Of all the amazing things you can do in science fiction, they go with zombies.
>>
>>64593855
Technically not zombies. You should have kept reading. They're just described as zombies because that's easier than saying "protomolecule infested vectors of infection" every time you want to talk about them

Humans are to the stars, but no aliens and just in the solar system.

Humanity divided between Earth, Mars, and belters.

Physics are real, and while they have very efficient powerplants, everything is well below light speed.

Two main plot lines.
a detective searching for a "Poor little rich girl" name Julie
and the crew of the "Cant" a ice hauler
first two episodes are okay, episodes 3 is good, 4 is great, and 5 is very good.

So when I read the book, I was left wondering about the Mormon generation ship.

they give some general dimensions and indicate it's shaped like a cylinder and is hollow (like Rama or B5), and we can assume it's steel or something similar. So we can get a rough estimate on its mass.
We know it's being built in orbit in the belt. So we have a rough idea of its starting orbital velocity and position.

we know Eros is floating towards Earth from the belt (similar starting speed, direction and orbital distance from sun as the Mormon ship)

we know the plan is to crash the Mormon ship into Eros, so that Eros falls into the sun. Accomplishing this requires that Eros' orbital velocity become zero, or close enough

We know the mass or Eros and we can estimate its orbital velocity. and we have an estimated mass for the ship.

knowing these things how fast does the Mormon shop need to be traveling when it impacts Eros in order to reduce Eros' orbital velocity to zero?

While it doesn't really change the answer, it's worth noting that both Eros and the Mormon ship start from similar orbits. So the ship will need to "get ahead" of Eros (if it's not already.), turn around (relative to its original direction of orbit), then accelerate up to the necessary speed.
>>

>Accomplishing this requires that Eros' orbital velocity become zero, or close enough

To be honest, I think the whole "Smash it with the generation ship was meant to be absolutely the last ditch effort. I don't think they were really expecting it to work well enough to crash the rock into the sun, rather just make sure it didn't hit Earth. Also, there was all the explosives the OPA planted that would have given it an extra kick.

- That said, the belter whore is doing a good job with what is a very typecast and limited role.
>>
>>64594338
Okay so that means that for Eros to stop, the Mormon ship + the explosives must hit it with 1.984x10^22 J of force.
>>
>>64594477
>Force
Energy, I'm a retard, my bad
>>
>>64594516
It's newtons for force innit? (Long time since I was in school)
>>
>>64594516
Average density of steel is about 8 tons per metre cubed. If we assume that the Mormon ship is slightly less than completely solid steel, say about 7 tons per metre average, and that it's approximately cylindrical, the Mass will be

M=4pir^2h(ro)

Expanse wiki says that the Nauvoo was "shaped as a cylinder, just over two kilometers long and half a kilometer wide."

So the mass is about 4.40x10^10kg
>>
To change Eros by one m/s you need 6,687,000,000,000,000 Newtons of force, or to put it in minds of us mortals.

to change Eros speed by 1 km/s and you had a saturn 5 first stage magic fuel it would take 193,826,086 seconds.

6.1 years.

I think the idea was to blow it up.
>>
>>64594667
To reduce Eros' velocity to zero alone, the Nauvoo would have to travel at a relative speed of 949.6km/s.... I think
>>
>>64594477
>>64594667
If 4.40x10^10kg hit 6.687×10^15 kg mass at any speed, it would be enough energy to eliminate both mega structures IMO.

of course, since eros was mined out it might be a lot lighter
>>
>>64594920
That's a good point, we haven't accounted for Eros being more hollow than not.
>>
>>64594382
In the book, the plan is explicitly stated to knock Eros into the sun in order to avoid contamination of the solar system

Maybe they change that in the show. It would make it slightly more realistic.
>>
>>64594948
>6.687±0.003)×10^15
if it 80% mined out (perhaps more mined out then back weight due to the added station material it is

>>
it would take ages to fall into the sun
>>
>>64595193
qt low grave looks.
>>
>>64595133
The collision would destroy both of the objects anyway, there isn't really a question of that. But I think it could actually work out, Especially if most of the mass of Eros was mined out. If the huge bombs that were put on the planet were about as powerful as the most powerful nuke ever detonated, that's about 2x10^15 J, then if we say that maybe 1/4 of Eros' mass is left then it would take 4.96x10^21 J to stop it, which means that the Nauvoo would have to hit at about 474.8 km/s... Yeah, I don't see this working actually
>>
Before someone asks who the other living qt is. julie is still most likely alive at this point. Though in a bad shape.
>>
>>64594226
>and we can assume it's steel or something similar
Why? It would be much more feasible if it was made mainly of carbon structures.
>>
>>64595324
If the Nauvoo could sustain even 10g acceleration then that would only take about uh... 80 minutes to reach that speed. That doesn't sound right though.
>>
>>64595435
True, but it's simpler to assume that it's steel because that's something easy to think in terms of. This is physics after all, did you expect something not based on assumptions, guesses and estimates?
>>

Yeah, and we know the Nauvoo was designed to tolerate hundreds of years burning at 1g, even that would only take 13 hours to reach the needed impact speed. Of course, getting it into position to make that run would take longer, and the fuel would mess up the mass calculations, and the mass would constantly change during the burn... but whatever, who cares about all that.
>>
>>64595456
The Epstein drives can do that with ease, they just don't because it happens to kill the crew. The Nauvoo wouldn't have that issue.

okay, I am a mormon - and I am not going to go into a lot of detail but Mormon faith would have no issues with space travel, aliens, or so on. After all, to be really blunt, we think god is a physical being who was born and perfected in a place that was not earth.

kind of agree, I dont have a huge problem with the episodes aside from the dialogue making it frustrating to follow some of the conversations, when you're setting up your world making part of the dialogue hard to understand is kind of a cardinal sin though.

It annoyed me.

3-5 are pretty solid episodes though, I enjoy alot of the characters, especially the space cop dude who seems disillusioned and corrupt, but guilty about it, and black QT and her chief tyrol-ish bro who has her back on the Rocinante, etc. Might be a cool series, possibly better than battlestar since it doesnt have all the stupid quasi-religious crap that made parts of battlestar awkward and goofy.

Wikipedia tells me that creole is the term for all simplified/mixed languages that have grown into a language, Which one did you mean?

From the books a while back I had the impression of spanish and german words in the belter language.

>I'm OK with that as long as they keep it consistent.
Indeed - it doesn't break physics in the sense that it not in the range of impossible, it just that the engines are much more efficient then we know how to build them, but work under calculations.

later there is something that is more magical, and it almost breaks the minds of all witnessing it

There is plenty of room for hundreds of billions on Earth. The problem is resources, not space.

So far, very close

2nd episode is mostly stuff not in the novel. Havelock plotline is not the same, and thus Miller plotline so far is not the same. The refrence to the slumlord who doesn't change his filters is not the same as well.
>>
>>64598752
Nah, people breed like rabbits, and they could easily build enough self-sufficient biospheres on its surface in order to maintain such a large population. I mean, Mars is completely barren, there are no oceans and not many geological formations that would prevent or hinder the construction of large structures.

the entire purpose of the protomolecule is to convert itself into a giant wormhole leading to a hub of other giant wormholes

>>
>>64599412
I don't think it was an offensive weapon at all. The protomolecule was designed to turn biomass into stargates to help it's users find inhabitable worlds, but it's users may not have even understood that other worlds could harbor sentient life.

In fact if they had burned all the algae off our surface and then set up camp one could hardly make any moral objections to their actions if you couldn't see the future. I think their entire travel system depended on sending out protomolecule probes at sublight speeds to build new gates so they could then travel to them later.

how does an intelligent species not realize that blindly sending out a biological agent that converts biomass into wormholes MIGHT JUST POSSIBLY wreck someone else's day? even considering the distances and chances of encountering another sentient race (extremely low) it is still HIGHLY unethical to use such a method.

they could have at least encoded a "this is how you turn this shit off" in the chemical structure or something.

>>64599603
Magnetosphere is not totally irreverent, as it strong enough to keep solar wind off the planet.

Also you ignore the opportunities to use the strong sunlight vie piping to produce huge vats of algae to feed farming vie greenhouse, aquaculture, or mycoprotein production.

Ever hear of a paperclip maximizer? Maybe some dipshit alien scientist created the protomolecule to make a Von Neumann probe concept and the instant he turned it on it murdered his entire planet and then shot itself off in a million different directions.

Sure there's space and light, but why bother going all the way to Mercury? If you want food you can make habitats closer to existing population centers rather than having to ship stuff back and forth constantly. Mercury has a bit of water but not much, you'd still need to bring in a lot to keep farms running.

>>64600018
The absolute shitload of asteroids in the belt and the outer planets. Also aerostats on Venus but that failed horrendously. Mercury is viable, but there are easier places to go first rather than a lone sunbaked planet that's deep in the Suns gravity well. Epstein drives are good, but 1g acceleration limits for long-term trips mean Mercury is a long way away in terms of time. The outer planets can at least support themselves with water and solar mirrors.
>>64600073
They have fusion power, their engines are a type of fusion engine as well.

The molecule is a machine, it doesn't think or feel even if parts that it built itself from once did. It just does the things that are programmed into it.

Ah, ok then. I've been to /lit/ before so you understand my response. The attention to detail is great, probably the best part. They really try to stay plausible with the physics which is pretty cool. They're good books, Id say the first is a bit light on characterization but that improves later on.

It offers a suitable place to live without the need of complex habitats, since Venus' gravity is Earth-like and conditions in the upper atmosphere are life-friendly.
