People in modern times choose to stay deaf because they don't want to undergo invasive brain surgery with a possibility of damaging themselves even further or having other complications.

Hearing people just say, "Get a cochlear implant! Give your kids cochlear implants! It's important for them to hear!" But they don't realize that cochlear implants are fucking brain surgery, so doing that to your kid is actually a very risky decision and even when it works they can't hear anything close to perfectly anyway. Plus, if you're 100% deaf a cochlear implant won't do anything, you have to have some small percentage of hearing ability for it to have the chance of working in the first place.

My dad is deaf, my mom is hearing. I grew up around both hearing and deaf people and have seen both sides of this issue. I can also assure you that SJWs have nothing to do with this.

I never realized that it was something that people commonly thought.
I'm more than reasonably sure it's just my paranoia though. I assumed the character in the show was born without auditory nerves or whatever, but was so good at what she did that the company/military paid for a translator to use hand signs at her.

It was a very, very common thought up until like the 80s or so. Doctors would tell the parents of deaf children not to let them learn sign language or else they would never be able to learn English, never be able to communicate with anyone, and have permanent impairment to their basic ability to learn anything.

In the last 20-30 years we've discovered that learning sign language as a child actually improves motor skills, improves communication abilities, and actually makes the child able to more easily learn other languages. All the benefits of being a bilingual child apply to learning sign language, with the bonus of being able to learn and use it before spoken language is a possibility, and it helps you start speaking at an earlier age to boot.

As an opposing anecdote, I learned sign language as a baby and was speaking full articulate sentences by age 2. Same with my brother and sister.

The trick is that you need to still speak to the kid and teach them more complex sign language and more complex speech as they develop. Some people do suck at parenting, and kids also develop at different rates.

Am I the only one that loves a good ontological paradox?

Sometimes they can be used as a cheap "get out of shit" easily, but in this case it was more of a means for the Doctor to figure out what to do.

Overall a pretty great story, just a few complaints. The Fisher King was a let down. He didn't really do too much for the main antagonist, and he was killed with a tiny fib. Also the romantic relationships between some of the crew felt really forced.

But these are definitely not story ruining faults.

This was actually a pretty big plothole. The Fisher King said he could sense the coordinates resonating in the Doctor's mind, then a minute later the Doctor said he erased the writing and purged the coordinates from his own mind. At that point the Fisher King should have still sensed the resonating and just not believed the Doctor.

Hmm. I wonder if they'll get at least someone noticible from the new series eventually.
