Bump. I'm going to Manila for a week in December. Most of the Trip Advisor sites are historical churches, malls, and gardens. I'll try a few of those, but surely there are bigger exciting things to see (and not party stuff either).

Any dark tourism sites around there? Bataan Death march tour or something extreme like that?

There are the remains of an old Spanish fort on Corregidor and Intramuros in Manila. That's about it unless you get out into the country

If you visit the phillippines dont visit manila, theres literally nothing to do there, its just like visiting a city in a different language, best places to go are the islands, just make sure you dont go too far south, pretty dangerous down there, me and a friend went to an island called Isla Verde, real nice island with some real nice people plenty to do there also

I can't think of any other reason to go to the Philippines.

Boracay Island. Beautiful beaches, and you can rent a hut on the beach to stay at.

Lots of great places not in Manila though.

Boracay is a tourist trap. Prices there are 500% higher. Other places just as good can be found with a bit of research. Just skip Mindanao since security is abit iffy.

The historical part of Manila that has the churches is worth like a half-day at best. Manila has a kind of unique vibe but there's nothing to really see there. If you're looking for cheap debauchery that's not in the form of drugs you kind find it in Manila, though.

If you're looking for drugs then you might try Borocay, though things may have changed since I went about a year and a half ago. I went to Borocay in monsoon season and found it mostly empty and fairly overrated. It's probably cooler during peak season but if you're looking for somewhere like Borocay then El Nido is vastly superior. I rented a kayak from a local and spent a day rowing between islands with the Windwaker Ocean song stuck in my head.

I also spent time in Puerto Princessa on my way to El Nido. Not a ton to do there either but it's a large city and the locals are friendly as hell to tourists.

Manila is full of police raids and drug bust at the moment the police love to target foreigners for bail and bribe money and bars there are outright scams, people are too jaded and will milk money out if you in every single way, even taxis will purposely or force drive you into a bar that they are syndicated with
Its not the best place to get into cheap debauchery its expensive for what its worth.

In cebu and bohol/baguio atleast the whores are genuine they are very open about prostitution and will not scam you
Just watchout for the Korean owned brothels they sometimes overcharge.

Can anyone recommend me how to find western standard apartments in provincial cities? Aircon, western kitchen, no roaches...

It's fukken difficult. Hotels are the closest but I really want more space and amenities.

Just got back from the Phillipines. Spent one week in Illigan, then spent the other in the countryside near Dumaguete, then Siquijor and then spent the rest at Cebu.

Stay the fuck away from Manila, it's an overcrowded shitmess there. Mindanao is not as dangerous as people make it out to be, but if you do go keep a low profile and expect a shit ton of military checkpoints. Then again, I was with family the whole time.

As for upscale places, Marco Polo is pretty fucking cheap for a place to stay in Cebu (5 Star Resort as well). My family spent about 100$ a night there.

I most definately reccommend Siquijor as a place to visit. Salagdoon Beach was one of the nicest resorts that have stayed at my whole entire life.

Any tips for staying in Ph as a vegetarian? It seems an entirely alien concept to them

Most of the sandniggers live in Marawi City, which is actually pretty closeby and there's a large amount of Muslims over at Illigan. My time there has had me hate Muslims little more. Almost all the shitheads there were refugees from Marawi and not no mention how rude all the mudslimes there were. Now that I think about it, all the beggars I had to put up with were wearing a hijab.

India has a lot of vegetarians. Calorie intake or not, Filipinos have meat with everything even if it's just tiny flakes of pork. It's got nothing to do with the poverty. They love meat.

Unless you have family or you really want to see the waterfalls in Illigan, I highly advise against going. But if you do go, make sure you have a tour guide or be in a group at all times. Once the sun starts going down, start heading back to your room immediately. The city is under martial law and the military will give two shits if you're a foreigner or not.

Even though I'm half-flip, I look really white. The only attention I got and you will probably get is harassment from "refugees" and some looks from the locals.

Also, I did see a couple foreigners at Illigan, all of which were at the waterfalls or the mall. Most of them probably had the same business there as we did--to see family.

Depending on where you go, there are vegetarian options. You could always look up vietnamese restaurants on trip advisor.
But most filipino dishes have meat unless you're just going to eat rice the entire time...

Also anyone paying for a flip whore is an idiot. Jump on a dating site or go on tinder when you get there. Even ugly fat burgers can find 6-7/10 chicks that are willing to fuck them for nothing. Just don't give them you're name because it's likely that they are trying to get pregnant so they can have a cute mixed kid that they think is going to grow up and be rich and famous.

If you're hitting Manila definitely go to fort Santiago and take the walking tour by Carlos celdran, its a great fresh look at Manila -- old Manila is great if you're into old churches and all but nothing much other than that; the food is also pretty good there: a lot of old restaurants.

Party wise, there are a lot of nicer social clubs than the sexy bars that pollute makati and Malate. Most middle to upper middle class flips aren't assholes but there are a lot of dumbasses over here.

If you're interested in dating women I highly suggest you look for an upper middle class girl, most people here are fugly and the only ones worth dating are mixed (Chinese, Spanish or other European/eastern mixture)
