I've been backpacking for about a year now, this is my pack list. I've seen a lot of people backpacking with huge packs, what do they fill them with?
My girlfriend hitchhiked across a few continents and she carried camp gear like a tent, sleeping bag, stove, etc. I can understand how somewhat luxury camping requires a 70L backpack. But in a city I don't even fill a 15L backpack, but I carry a 20L with a satchel inside and fill the space with snacks and drinks.
Obviously there are ascetics who carry even less.
I've seen a lot of people in cities with huge packs, what's inside? Is it just camping gear?

Interesting.
I only bring a cellphone and no other electronics. Also when I first get on the plane, I wear 4 pairs of clothes including underwear. I have to carry a lot if medical supplies so that forces me to make sacrifices.

A lot of people bring sleeping bags, which are just bulky if anything. But I've experienced a lot of people with a lot of clothes, maybe shoes, towels, absurd amounts of toiletries. Those kinds of things
I'm leaving on a RTW trip in a week, though I'm also going to Iceland which adds a lot of autumn/winter things that I would have left out otherwise (fleeces, baselayer clothing, etc.).
Other than that, my 1P tent takes up a lot of space, as do a (tiny) sleeping mattress and a sleeping bag. Re: the sleeping bag though, I can really only recommend you look into C O M P R E S S I O N B A G S. They are *the* shit. My ~15L bag has shrunk down to about 5L. It takes a while and a bit of effort everytime you put stuff in, but the amount of space you gain is incredible.
Aside from that, well, food takes up a lot of space, as do spare clothes. Granted, I'm probably taking along too many spare clothes, but rather too many than too few.
I'm clocking in at a neat 16kg right now (of which I'll take ~12kg with me to hike), but that's probably still too much.
OP, if you'd like I can try to give you a detailed packing list. I won't be unpacking my backpack for someone on the Transhumanist Backpacking Lovers Board, but I can approximate.

That would be great!
I'm just trying to get some concept of what others are hauling. It was interesting to hear that you are in fact taking camping gear, I thought that people do this - are you going to be camping a lot? Did you consider ultralight gear like tarps and hammocks?
