Must see?
Must avoid?
Money advice?

What is the creepiest /x/ spooky type thing I should see? Altas Obscura and the dark tourist sites are scanty for Venice. Surely they have a creepy cemetery or execution site I can play ghost hunter at (I don't believe in ghosts I just like seeing dramatic sites).

Thanks!

There is a palace called Ca Dario, it is not open to public but it's creepy, you can google it, it's cursed.
The other super creepy thing is the Ospedale al mare, in the Lido island. It's an old but not so old (my bf was born there) hospital, you can explore it and find some junkies or squatters.

About the cemetery, it's an entire island, the one of San Michele. It's pretty big to be a cemetery.

I'm not into /x/ shit so that's all I have to say.

Avoid eating where you don't see Venetians eating, avoid pizza and ethnic restaurants, avoid eating in places that have "buttadentro" outside the restaurant. Please don't come to Venice asking for pizza. Please.
This is my horror.

And about the ghost hunting, spooky things, the city herself is dying, eaten alive by tourist vultures.
She is the ghost.

please don't come
>>
>>1286746
>please don't come
oh. ok.

but thanks for the advice. If I do come I will be a quiet and inoffensive tourist, I promise.

I've seen people taking pictures of supermarkets. I've heard people asking what to eat and when told not pizza, they asked: what then? seafood. "we don't eat fish"
I've been asked AT WHAT TIME VENICE CLOSES

You'll find plenty of spooks alright. They're the chief purveyors of selfie sticks.

I was there in May two years ago and it was absolutely packed everywhere. Someone called it an outdoor museum but even that is generous as it implies some level of dignity. It's more like PASTAPIZZA GONDOLA Disneyworld.

The mere presence of non-venetians ruins it. I am not even italian.
While it's a cliche to say this, it pained me to see this beautiful city reduced to a commercialized shell for us to gawk at. It's like some large animal died and now ants are swarming its corpse. But that can be said about most of Europe.
Most of the reason people travel is to see things predating 1945 and oggle the creations of better men without comprehending or even actively eschewing what enabled their feats. The modern western bugman observing the accomplishments of his forefathers is much like a cargo cult.

Anyway, check out the residential area in the southwest. It has what I imagine is a *genuine* italian feel to it and not much people clogging up the alleyways.

I just visited Venice for the first time two weeks ago.

I dunno about any spooky places, but the main draw of the city for me was getting lost in the streets, away from the super touristy areas such as the piazza di San Marco. The west side of the city is super fun to explore, and I found places such as the last remaining casino in the city (Which was closed when I passed by) and an Illuminati church with a secret entrance in the back alleyway.

I loved Lido as well, the beach is awesome and there's a lot of greenery that gives it a really tranquil vibe.

I absolutely agree, but at least Venice is such a unique place in itself that it's hard not to enjoy it. Plus, I'm an artist myself and love art history, so I expect that I'll come back at some point just to enjoy the architecture again.

I just picked a random image. You're unbearable.

>>1287102

I'm never gonna return to that hellhole anyway.
Nice and ordered things are fascistic then. The way fascism and national socialism are implicitly portrayed these days the more I like them. Maybe those nazis are onto something. I'll go watch some Hitler speeches now.
Thanks for showing me the way, Mario!

You sound autistic as hell, and what do you mean "once again"? That was my first post.

Venezia is the most beautiful city of the world after Rome.

And you tourists are destroying it. You only deserve to die.

Make room to the Italian masterrace.
>>

I think he was just referring to the atmosphere of the fascist towns between Veneto and Romagna. Benito founded hundreds of colonies (i.e. summer camps by the sea for young people) on the northern coasts of Italy, and modern beaches were "invented" during the 50s on the basis of that work. Those towns are littered with fascist ruins and some of them are really interesting to visit. They still have that special vibe of the Italian economic boom. It's a weird mixture of wild nature, luxurious areas and decadent remnants of a better past.

People like you who visit it thinking you'll get to see venetian life like something out of a movie. If you go there for the architecture and historical importance of being one of the most magnificent, inspiring and completely intact cities in western history you wouldn't be disappointed. It's a beautiful Italian renaissance city built on water taking cues from the different cultures the city ruled as an independent republic for almost 1000 years, how the fuck is that disappointing? You know why? Because you visit it without any real reason, you visit it because that's what you're 'supposed' to do in Italy. You're not interested in what the actual city has to offer, you're interested in some Hollywood fantasy that hasn't existed in 300 years. Even by the 18th century tourism was a major part of its economy.

If you knew anything about the city, you would know it isn't an "authentic" place, you went there with a false expectation based on a nonexistent experience, or you felt the need to go there because you are in Italy, so you must go to Venice. The actual draw of the city is it's a place frozen in time, the city only existed because of medieval trade routes, there was never any industry or reasons to draw people to live there once the trade routes moved west. The whole point of visiting is to see the city almost exactly as it once was, with only one or two modern buildings standing. On top of that it's Venice, built on water and lined with beautiful canals and palaces each with their historical story dating back more than 500 years. This has been the point of going to Venice since the 1700s, nothing has changed. It's like visiting a wholly impracticable(by modern standards) castle and being surprised that it's full of tourists and it's purpose is to now serves them. Just look at the Gondolas for example, why do you think they are even there when people could get around with small gas powered boats now? For the tourists. It was never 'destroyed
>>
>>1287258
Cont.
by tourists' it has been preserved for tourists, it's only reason for existence for centuries now is to cater to tourists. And thats fine, because the only reason you should visit Venice is for the aspects where it doesn't matter if it's full of tourists or locals, you should visit because it's an amazing preservation of one of the most important and beautiful places in western history. 'Authenticity' would have filled in the canals, tore down the northern end and extend it into the greater metropolitan area, or worst yet, completely abandon the city. We should be all happy that isn't the case. Other similar historically important cities in Italy like Florence, Rome, Milan, and Naples feel authentic because they still serve an economic purpose that doesn't center around tourism(though still important)

I highlight every single word from this post.

10/10 with honors

lol thanks anon, as you can see I let the constant Venice shitposting get to me, I even have to hear about it from every 19 year old irl who thinks they have an amazing rebellious opinion when they inevitably start talking about their summer abroad
>>
>>1287265
People on the internet shitpost about Italy and Europe just because of the "safety" meme. I'm pretty sure they can't wait to have a reason to shitpost even about those heavens on earth that are the small medieval towns of Italy. Damn, how fucking stupid is the internet.

I went because I was dragged along by family.
I never said it was disappointing, nor did I expect anything other than what I got except that the beauty of the architecture caught me unprepared.
I never complained that it wasn't authentic because I was not expecting "authentic Venice" whatever that means. When I highlighted "genuine" I meant it semi-ironically because it's such a cliche. And I used the adjective to refer to the italian feeling I thought I got in that corner of the town, not talking about the city at large.

Yes the city continues to exist for and by tourism. That fact is not incompatible with the opinion "I didn't like it because it's crowded and touristy."
What century it became a tourist trap is irrelevant.

So cool your calzone.

>>1287245
Neat. I am not sold on the architectural style but I do enjoy a good abandoned house.
>>
>>1287258
this is inaccurate, the city would sustain itself also with fewer tourists, and the reason she exists is not to please the amazed foreigners,
for example, a lot of gondoliers spend a lot of time rowing without tourists aboard. you know why? because venice has an amazing rowing season, there are 2-3 times a year (like for the vogalonga or the sensa) when the canal grande is closed to traffic and used as a track for rowing races.
>>
>>1287809
He didn't say Venezia exists to please tourists, he said her current state is enough for a smart person to visit her.
Then of course Venezia has a life of her own and would easily go on with just her locals.
>>
>>1286421
