Is anyone else disappointed at the lack of quality travel oriented shows?

I have seen this brought up here before a few times when people ask what shows to watch. Usually the same names are thrown around; Departures, An Idiot Abroad, Long Way Down/Round, Parts Unknown, Rick Steves shows...and that's about it. Sure there's a few other ones, there's a few more about food that involve some travel, but overall there's not much choice and not much new content is coming up.

So I guess my question is, why? Travel/tourism is more popular than ever and yet it seems like it's not a popular topic to create shows around. If you were to create a tv show that involves travel what would it be about? (food, backpacking, participating in some cultural events, etc.)
>>
Same. I grew up with Globe Trekker/Lonely Planet on PBS. There are some gems out there but not what you would expect these days. I think a lot of it has moved to YouTube.
>>
I forgot to answer the second part of the question. You can call it a gimmick if you want, but I like travel shows with an objective. Ewan and Charley were on motorcycles, and Karl Pilkington was intentionally put in uncomfortable situations for the purpose of recording his reaction. Those make for incredibly enjoyable tv. I think it would be interesting to go to a foreign country and live with a family for a weekend. Maybe one weekend with a lower income family and the next weekend with an upper middle class family to understand how the majority of people live.

I think michael palin deserves to be in the list of good shows. And simon reeve maybe depending on which subject
>>
>>1282532
yeah, it's all know it alls and travel gurus now. Im tired of anthony bourdains face and his "expertise". I miss the wandering people that never pretended to be experts on anything but hopping around aimlessly just enjoying the ride.
>>
>>1282532
I love Rick Steves, you can find all his full episodes on youtube
>>
>Madventures

Also yes, most of it is now on YT. Off the top of my had Mark Wiens and The Food Ranger are good. Joe Goes is a great channel that does unique stuff.
>>
David Choe's hitchhiking shows were pretty cool
>>
Departures.
>>

MadVentures snd Vice guide to travrl is the best.

Sorry if that's too 'edgy' for you guys but I just got tired of watching old men in shorts take pics at Vatican City or record themselves drinking in Paris.

I am real-traveler scum, but I've made peace with this and learned to love myself.
>>
>Micheal Palin
Remeber watching him in the '90's. Can't remeber if it was any good though or what it was like, anyone else?
>>
>>1283148
I love his shows, but they are a little outdated. Most of the things he sees are history to us. Such as:

>Travelling to the soviet union
>not going to iran because of the iraq-iran war.
>leaving the soviet union days before it colapses
>seeing independence in kiev
>seeing southeast asia before the mass tourism
>visiting pakistan

Etc etc

Still a awsome show, eventhough it makes you wish you lived in the 80's
>>
>>1283151
Sounds pretty cool actually. Watched the re-runs with my dad when I was a kid. Only episode I can remeber is in Yalta with him riding the worlds longest trolley bus route. It's eird how you remeber some things. Might give it a go tonight, see if he ever went to Moldova.
>>
>>1283151
Also jellous as fuck of him visiting the soviet union. Currently attempting to visit every state 2021.
>>
Thirsty Traveler for booze hounds
>>
>>1283165
What was the series called? I never watched much Micheal Palin but I feel a binge coming along
>>
>>1283171
There's loads. Full circle, around tje world in 80 days, new europe. Just goolge his name and travel and they'll come up.
>>
>>1283171
Soviet union was "pole to pole"
Amazing trip, he left the soviet union a few days before it fell

The best series is full circle in my opinion.

I think michael palin is such a good dude, i would watch anything with him in it.

>>1283205
Thanks just watched the Pole to Pole episode on Russia. Amazing.

Can you remember which one has Yalta in it? I saw a YouTube clip but it looked quite recent (New Europe I think)
>>
Despite it being mostly about food i enjoy Rick Steins programs.
>>
OP here, I love Michael Palins show, he's actually my travel-hero. The thing is, he's only done 1 travel show in the last decade, Brazil in 2012. It was really good but I enjoyed his older shows a lot more.

Not edgy at all but I hate Vice programming. They lie and exaggerate everything so I can no longer trust what they say. I find their food programs to be decent, so for example their Munchies episodes on Scotland were both awesome and hilarious. But I find their travel "documentaries" to be over the top with the presenters making it seem what they do is something that only they have special access to but in reality it's what every tourist in the region ends up doing.

I'm a huge documentary fan. When most people used to have a hard drive filled with porn I used to collect docus on mine. I think I still have about 900gb of them to watch through. This is why I can't stand watching something that's filled with obvious lies or exaggeration of truth.

>it's what every tourist in the region ends up doing.
I do not think Liberia has been a travel destination for most since the 1970s. But back then I believe it had some comfy resorts and was probably a nice place to visit.

>that weird midget village
>paying a Japanese MILF to take a shit on you
I don't know how typical these things are either..

But yes, Munchies is nice, they helped me find some decent places to eat at in Austin.
>>
>>1282532
>Departures
Do people really consider this good? I watched an episode from Ethiopia and god it felt dated and overall the host (hosts? don't remember) was so fucking annoying. Overall very low quality
>>
>>1283228
It's decent bro traveling, it's in English, and it's streamable on Netflix. What more do you want?

I watched Michael Palin's stuff but it's all old as shit. I watched when he visited the US and stopped by my hometown in Colorado, I also watched his visit to Egypt but this was all in the early '90s....Are these places even the same now?
>>
>>1283226
I haven't seen those episodes mentioned because I got fed up with their earlier shows. I have seen a documentary on Liberia, regarding a guy who lived there as a child and went back after the war to see how it changed. It seemed like a typical poor African country where people just try to live normal lives. I just looked up Vice and of course their docu is about "cannibal warlords of Liberia. That right away sounds exaggerated as fuck. But I understand their positioning, it's a business to them, it's the entertainment industry and they're just doing what's best for them to make money.

A long time ago when Vice was starting out they did a show about going to Chernobyl and sneaking in blah blah. They made it seem like they almost went into the reactor. Later someone revealed that they actually just took a standard tour from Kiev and just faked half the things they talked about. High on entertainment value but low on realistic content imo.

>>1283228
Departures is a low budget show though. You watch it for how realistic their portrayal of travel is. There's only one other show I've seen on tv that was even more realistic, it was called Backpackers. I think it was in like the late 90s or early 2000s. 3 Aussie friends traveling around Europe.
>>
>>1283206
Can't remeber. Sorry. I must've been like 8/9 when I saw the re-runs with my dad.
>>
>>1283237
To be fair, he was indeed a warlord, and he did indeed fight naked, and yes he did indeed eat people.

But yes, their shit is hyperbolic. I must admit that I also love watching unprofessional over the top conservative Fox News as well. These are my guilty pleasures, sue me.
>>
>>1282532
Departures is the best travel show everz!
>>
Search up Karl Watson documentaries on YouTube. He's damn good and I find it so much more enjoyable then any travel television I've seen. Since it's just him and a camera, everything feels much more authentic.
>>
Long Way Down or wherever is interesting and Ewan is always nice but I watched some of the episodes.
They have a caravan of cars with doctors and film crew with them all the time and some assistants get all their visas ready for them even to be able to cross some really exotic places.
That's really fucking boring and stupid and no one can relate to that whatsoever.

Madventures from Finland, did their first season in like 2001 or -02, just the two guys with no crew or fucking doctors.
And I'm not saying that's something really amazing, travelling together in places where anyone could essentially go but it's reality, that can be done by us normal folk too.
