Best: NYC, London, SF
Worst: Atlanta, Seattle, Jacksonville

Seattle, the coffee was mediocre and the food was shit. Trash lined the streets, everything was bland, beige, and crawling with stoners. They put cilantro in fucking sushi. Its like a crappy version of SF.

Atlanta has a few blocks in the center of the city, but walk a mile away and it turns into a super-Camden. You think you know racial divide? you think you know what about institutionalized racism? Come down to Atlanta and you'll see a real example.

Jacksonville. I spent a single night in that city, and I don't really know anything about it so most of my opinion is based off of personal experience walking around alone at 3am. I don't really know if its your traditional shity-city, but I personally would never go back,

NYC and London are self-explanatory, especially since they're so similar. I didn't like London, but only because it felt like I'd been to the same city dozens of times. That is to say, if you haven't been to either, they're both equally cool. Otherwise, your experience won't be unique enough to warrant more than a short-visit.

I think this will be an unpopular opinion but Kyoto tbqh. It's sprawling decentralized nature reminded me of some American cities actually, and what was frustrating was that there didn't seem to be an actual urban "core" that you could walk around in like in other Japanese cities I've visited. The interesting stuff was spread all around the urban area and was VERY touristy. Chinese tourists absolutely swamping every little street. And since the only interesting things were temples it got old really quickly. Ended up taking the train to other nearby cities instead of staying in Kyoto.

I saw a really cool aquarium there with my bro, much better than the one in my hometown.

After an Orioles game I found a place in part of town that had cobblestone streets for some reason that sold pizza by the slice and it was one of the best slices I've ever had. It's not all like West 'Ballimur' as you guys pronounce it. Plus a lot of boats and ships leave from there.

I'm seeing a lot of Seattle hate. I was planning on moving there. Is it really that bad
>>
>>1276149
Hmmm. I came from Nagasaki which I absolutely loved. Kagoshima itself seemed kind of boring. Everything was so grey. All other cities I had visited before in Japan had some kind of interesting stuff to see or do in the city itself but Kagoshima had nothing but that neat lookout point. I went to the volcano first thing in the morning which I enjoyed. But the afternoon in the city was just plain boring. I started to hate the city when I booked into my hostel. The owner was fucking rude and it had some weird rules about the lockers and the room stank of cigarettes and there were three men snoring like jigsaws. The last thing I remember about Kagoshima is eating at the Mc Donalds. Yakushima made it worth it though.

It's a dirty and smog-filled hell-hole that doesn't live up to people's expectations.

Americans with a pittance of interest in history grow up learning that Athens was an ancient center of learning. We expect something similar to Rome.

Instead, we find ourselves in a concrete jungle covered in graffiti and dog shit.

it's just another mid-sized city, like Pittsburgh or Minneapolis or Columbus or something... definitely not worth the cost of living. Boston is about the same price and has much more going on, let alone the surrounding area, fucking NYC 3 hours away instead of Portland, a city that is basically Seattle-lite, and Seattle is basically San Francisco-ultra lite. and then you have the entire new england coast from portland ME down to NJ and the whole thing. Seattle, what do you have? Portland 3 hours down and Vancouver 3 hours up. Vancouver is cool, but once again, it's just Seattle, arguably a better version.

You go to Seattle because you were hired by Amazon or Microsoft or SpaceX or something, maybe to go to UW. That's it. There is nothing that great about it and I think it's stupidly overhyped. It's just another mid-sized US city that's being gentrified like fucking crazy with very low rental vacancy rates and increasing rent prices. It's a shit show and I wouldn't go there. Woah dude Grunge! The city is nothing like that. You're 25-30 years late. Now it's a bunch of chinese people and hipsters.

Everyone has their heads up their ass, complains the whole time when you say anything negative(even if it is true) about California. The traffic sucks, everything is expensive, and outside iconic places everything is a huge letdown. The only good thing about this area is how well they are at white washing it to sucker in tourists.

3. San Francisco

Plenty of Californians moving to Seattle area to escape the Mexicans they lovingly imported, of course they never admit that. They always say stuff like "the cost of living is better", which is bullshit since California is dirt cheap if you don't mind living in a Mexican area.

It confused me on so many levels (why not on the side of the road so you don't risk getting hit by a car? Why at all?). It's just a bad place.
>>

Well actually I went to Florence, Venicia and many more cities and areas in Italy as well as other destinations with a similar apeal in spain and portugal.
I just believe that rome is superior to all of them. While the citycenter is decent at best, (way to many tourists) the suburbs are amazing. Noone is going there cause its not recomended in any lonly tavel guides or tripadviser, while there is still a lot to do and see. Most other (similar) cities are beautifull and exciting but cant entertain me in the same way rome does. Venice is a wonderfull place to stay but after 3 days you have seen everything. On the other hand rome can entertain you for weeks if you want. The amount of history to explore is just immense. I assume you dislike rome simply cause you didnt gave it enough time and/or you were on a time limit. To be fair italy is for me the best travel country , so its understandable you were just doing the mainstream tourist stuff and went to your next destination.
On the other note: I wont defend LA, its just personal preferense.
Tell me what are your best 3 places to visit ? curious here.

Most of it was bombed during WWII because it was very industrial. As a result, it was rebuilt in the 50s by people who thought that a shopping mall was the best invention since sliced bread. It's soulless, it's ugly, it's generic, it's huge. I have genuine difficulty coming up with a similar-sized city in Europe that is as ugly as Birmingham.
>inb4 Jewellery Quarter and the Canal
Most cities in the UK have their equivalents, and most of those feel less jarring compared to their surrounding neighbourhoods.

I've only been to Lisbon for two days, so I can't offer my definitive opinion. But I really liked how laid-back it felt. Except for the wankers offering you coriander as 'hashish' all the time. But hey.

Yeah, I know it must be there for a reason, but I don't get the reason. Slovakia as a whole is actually one of my favorite countries, I guess it's also the reason why I'm always disappointed when I realize that Bratislava itself still does not make sense. It's not like Poprad or Nitra or Kosice would be my favorite towns of all time, but they all have some sort of character that Bratislava lacks completely.

No I've been to more of that country than Brazilians. When you have money and you're white - it's a great land.

It is horrendous. The downtown is nig central. As mentioned I have money, not THAT much money to live on one of those private islands. South Beach is where sensible people go to.

It's definitely nostalgia influenced and I wouldn't go now but I remember it really fondly.

Bangkok: Loved the cyberpunk-y feel to the city. Super developed and fun.

Worst:
Cancun: The city itself is objectively filthy. Run down, depressing and a mess.
Naples: Italians are lazy: The City. Seriously, buildings bombed in WW2 still yet to be knocked down.
Vientiane: There's no clusterfuck as capitals usually do so you can hop on the scooters and see the city in the day. Still, the least do in out of any in SE Asia.

Best --

Rome: if you are at all into history and art, this is a dream city. Plus it is possible to get an enjoyable meal there.

Washington: See, Rome. Not as sure-fire on the good food front, but still.

Dubai: And before the hate starts, I understand why some folks won;t like the city, and why some would refuse to like it whether they'd like it or not for ethical reasons. But I got plugged in with some really nice folks there, and had a fine old time, and found the kitschy ski-indoors-in-the-middle-East sort of attractions to be goofy fun.

Worst --

I really haven't had that many travel experiences I'd say were that bad, if I had to name something I'd say

Cartagena, Colombia: Beaches in the city were terrible, and it was hot as fucking balls. (Beautiful beaches and national parks nearby, though.)

Seattle: Just didn't like it that much, not terrible, just "Meh." To me, YMMV. Again, there are some lovely areas nearby.

Doha: It's like Dubai, but without the opportunities for goofy fun.

Guess what -- the meanings of terms can change over time.

Yes, first, second and third world used to refer to political alignment. They are no longer used in that sense, since there are no Soviet-allied states any more, and the terms are commonly used to denote developed, developing and undeveloped countries, respectively.

I lived in Kyoto for five weeks so I have a soft spot for it, especially because I had time to dig in and really explore, but I can understand how it might not be the most appealing for most tourists who stop in for a couple days. The bus system is ridiculously extensive and I had a monthly pass so getting anywhere wasn't a hassle. I was really into the integration of the shrines, waterways, and greenery into the urban space, not to mention it's just a lot more laid back than bigger cities i.e. Osaka and Tokyo, which is nice especially during the oppressive Japanese summer weather.

I honestly can't pick the best three. So many places are great for different reasons. Weed (Amsterdam, Barcelona, Portland), culture/heritage (Tokyo, London, St Petersburg), beaches (Sydney, Barcelona again, Boracay), women (Shanghai, Hanoi, St Petersberg again, Medellín), nightlife (Shanghai again, Montreal, New York), street life (Rio, Moscow, HCMC), food (Singapore, Taipei, LA). It's a big beautiful world anons.

Venice (don't care that it is pretty much a show for tourists now, it has been since Regency fops went there on their grand tour anyway, it is still the most beautiful city in the world)
Liverpool (it's a bit run down in parts but the waterfront area is breathtaking and the view of it from the water is reckoned to be seccond only to New York. Seriously friendly city too)
Rome (Everything there is an experience, even telling gypsies who are trying to sell your wife roses on the Spanish Steps to fuck off).

Worst:
Banjul (biting insects everywhere, haven't really done much with it since colonial times apart from building a great big road to Senigal to get the fuck out of dodge. Some of the people are very nice though, but you have to be a good judge of character to see if someone is genuinely friendly or trying to con you).
Exeter (the worst people you'll ever meet, twats and posers)
Blackpool (I'm still undecided if the den of inequity that is the Vegas of the North is good honest British naff-ness and tat at its best or the very gates of Hell. Worst "city" it may be but you'll always have fun there, especially if fun means drinking so much you publicly vomit)

Is India really as bad as this thread make it seem to be? Is the stinky smell unavoidable?

There was just so much to do, the zoo, the USS midway, there was enough to do while still enjoying to leisure and go do outdoor stuff. I havent found another city with the feel of San Diego yet.

From Manchester, live in London

Best

Bangkok - Great nightlife, loads of energy about the place.

Boston - Love the seafood (lobster rolls), lots of culture, good bar and pub scene.

Budapest - Vienna and Prague are close but I love the rundown vibe of Budapest and all the ruin pubs.

(Honorable mentions: Hanoi, Dubrovnik & Korcula, Stockholm, Cape Town, Berlin, Tallinn, Edinburgh)

Worst

Toronto - It was a big 'meh' for me. Not very pretty, nightlife was rubbish. I went in winter so I thought that might be the reason but I went to Montreal as well and had a great time there.

Jo'burg - Was genuinely concerned I'd be robbed and get shot. Very sketchy.

Bucharest - I went 15 years ago when very few tourists were there. Paid a lot of bribes. Got ripped off continuously. I've heard it's improved a lot, so I might re-visit. What do people think?

Mixed feelings

LA - I don't drive and I'm used to integrated public transport. Found LA difficult to get around. Everyone expects more from it as it's filmed so much but it's underwhelming. I think it's the kind of city where you need to be 'in the know' about where to go. Very difficult to just turn up and have a good time.

Paris - It was one of my favorite cities in the world. Spent a lot of time there with work over the last 10 years. At first I loved it. Then I noticed it was stagnating compared to London (compare Gare Du Nord to St. Pancras Station) and now it is actually going downhill and getting worse, which is rare for a big capital city. I genuinely hope they turn it around.

Toronto is very boring in winter, since there's little/no events going on past christmas.
Montreal however has winter festivals and therefore stays more lively throughout.
Visit during the summer and you can visit Toronto island, niagara falls, and the nightlife is much more awake (especially on thursday, friday and saturday).
Still, it's a business city, so it kind of sucks.

"According to the U.S. Census, 63.3 percent of Baltimore's population in 2013 was black and 31.6 percent white."

Berlin seconded (thirded, whatever)
>>
Best:
- Munich (clean, very modern, tourists are not too bad as long as you don't go during Oktoberfest)
- Vienna (very surprised I haven't seen this mentioned... small for a capital but still relevant; like the people and the food)
- London (way too many tourists of course but still interesting. I like to take the tube somewhere random and just explore)

Worst:
- Berlin (a few places are good but compared to munich and hamburg it's a shithole)
- Paris (even dirtier than berlin, people are ass.. architecture and food is good of course)
- Hildesheim (literally insane. never ever go there. they have 0 young people, 0 shopping facilities, 0 architecture. My grandparents live there but i usually escape to hannover as much as possible when on a longer visit)

Live in: NYC

Top 3 visited:
1. Copenhagen
2. San Francisco
3. Berlin

Won't say worst 3 because I haven't been to many major cities and I have liked all of the ones I have been to, but the ones which did not make the top 3: Washington DC, Miami, Montreal, Boston (but all of these were at least 15 years ago and I'm 25 now, except Miami)

no niggers meme, the town is now actually just a cesspool in general. I love the history and what it WAS, but post Katrina it's just miserable and sad.

pre millennium New Orleans was a wonderful place, it's so sad what's happened to that town. Disaster, mismanagement, corruption, etc

Is Paris that bad or refugee meme?

As someone who has to move to France very recently I'm afraid to ask why everyone hates Paris.
I mean most of you people are from the USA and/or travelled to latin America so you should be able to digest some shitskins.

Aye, supposedly Auckland is one of the most livable cities in the world but I found it to be so boring. I didn't like it at all. In fact I didn't like any of the cities in NZ, they seemed very undeveloped for a western country.

I completely agree with the country being all about nature. I did 23 day hikes in my 49 days there and in January I'm coming back to hike the Milford Track and maybe Routeburn trail.

I'm assuming you didn't leave the French Quarter while in Nola? If you happen to give it another try, Uptown and Midcity are dope to visit, especially if you know people there to show you around. Certain parts of the Bywater are also really cool.
