I just have a credit card with free world wide cash withdraw so where ever I go I just get $500 of the local currency out of the next ATM.
Exception are countries where I can get a way better rate on the black market for EUR/USD compared to the bank price. Argentina was one good example. The official rate was 1usd = 10 peso, dollar blue rate was 1usd = 14-17 peso. Today it's official rate is 15 peso and dollar blue is still about 17 peso but that's no longer worth the effort.

I'm using my card a good deal when I travel to get money out. Heard horrible things about travelex, but really don't see them as THAT big of an issue. I heard airports take stupid level cuts, not sure if true
Bit coines
I usually try to exchange currency before I leave for the trip.
However, I had absolutely no difficulty exchanging currency in Hong Kong, for glaringly obvious reasons.

Travelex is the biggest scam I've ever seen. Literally throwing money away. Any other currency exchange is almost guaranteed to be better.
