What are some countries with great forests/woods? I have such a hard on for forests, even when I was young, I loved exploring them.
Eastern Europe looks good at the moment, as well as PNW, Oregon and Washington for example.
Being able to rent a cabin close to or in the woods would be the idle long vacation for me
Yeah, Romania, Poland, Russia, Ukraine are good bets. Not sure how feasible renting a cabin is though.

Scotland and to a lesser extent England and Wales have the nicest forests on Earth. You can't go wrong with Scotland but the New Forest in England is geared up for tourists but you do pay a premium

Looking at the New Forest on google maps it looks like the shittiest forest on earth.
But if you say the atmosphere is nice, I'll accept that.
Excluding North America, New Zealand is my top country for forests. It's a shame it's a bit of a monoculture -- just two subspecies of beech tree as far as the eye can see -- but it's true wilderness, and you can find more diverse tropical forest on the north island.
Hawaii has awesome, extensive forests, speaking of the tropics.
Spain has a great selection of forests to match its climatic diversity. Hardwood in the north, Mediterranean oak in the south.

I should mention as far as NZ goes that a $100 annual hut pass entitles you to stay for unlimited nights in ~900 backcountry huts maintained by the government.
