So, a friend and I, are planing a trip to one of the Baltic countries, for next years summer - I've myself already been to Lithuania (Vilnius), and loved it, now the question is, where to next, Tallinn or Riga?
We're stuck in the middle, both cities sound interesting, but each time we conclude "this is it we're going there", the next moment something comes up, making the other city more attractive.
So my question is, do any of you guys have a proposal or arguments of witch of the two cities to choose to travel to?
>>
>>1269625
Well, in tallin you can take the ferry to hellinski which is a cool trip, thats something you cant do in riga
>>
>>1269625
Well, that one I had not thought about!
>>
Maybe go to both? I am not sure how you like to travel and how much time will you spend in Baltics but in my opinion both of these cities are doable in one trip. You can spend 2-3 days in Riga, then take an evening bus to Tallinn which takes about 4 and a half hours and do the same there.
>>
>>1269684
That's an interesting idea, but we're only going to be traveling for 5 days, so we'll only have 3 whole days to stay, and I (mostly my friend) don't want to spend the holiday on mostly traveling.

I'm gonna end up visiting both cites at some point, just need to choose witch one's going to be the first.
>>
>>1269625
You can get a cheap bus between the cities, it takes about 4 hours.
>>
>>1269625
Tallinn - Riga is a meme. But you can stay 2 days each, as both are not that big.
>>
>>1269758
Then it defintly could be worth think about doing it that way!
>>
>>1269828
So I'm pretty noob - why is it a meme?
>>
>>1270038
And look at the In Your Pocket guides to each city. They're free downloads and really good.
>>
>>1270040
I'll do that - and thanks for the advice

As someone who's travelled a lot around the Baltics, I'd go for Tallinn. It's better than Riga, not that Riga is bad, but Tallinn has more of an atmosphere. The old town is super charming, the people are friendly, the food is good and cheap, and if you get tired, there's plenty of interesting places to go for day trips as well.
>>
I was in Tallinn and Tartu over the winter. Tartu was fantastic, Tallinn was very nice.

Baltics are all asocial autists so they won't appear to be very social. Russians and Slavs are way more friendly. Estonians take a while to warm up and then they'll be pretty chatty.

I(we) got by with just English and a few words of Estonian, since most professionals and pretty much all young people speak English.

Estonians love freedom even more than America and they're ready to turn Estonia into a crater if the Russians invade and try to occupy again. I admire(d) that.
>>
Gonna hijack this thread a wee bit. I'm planning a trip, 2 days in every city
Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Warsaw and krakow (for auschwitz). should I spend more or less than two days in any city?
>>
>>1272288
Two full days in each city with travel days in between? Or arrive somewhere early on Monday and leave late on Tuesday? Cause the latter sounds like it would just be a whole lot of stress.

If you ask me, you need at least three full days in each to do it justice.

I always get weirded out when foreigners talk about just chatting up people randomly on public transport and parks and shit.

If OP is still here feel free to ask questions.

t. someone who lives in Riga.

Who actually does that lmao.
>>

gomen balt-kun. You guys just keep it close to the chest. I live in a very social city in a very social state and go to a very social university populated by domestic students from all over the country and a ton of intl. students too. We talk a lot to everyone. And, to start with, I can get pretty chatty.

I had a good time, and we didn't feel unwelcome, the atmosphere was just a little more distant/cold than what we're used to (which, in fairness, might be exceptionally unusual - idk, I haven't been around to all that many places).
>>
>>1272415
The latter. Only have like 10 days
>>
>>1272288
I don't know about Tallinn or Riga - But both Krakow and Vilnius are worth spending more than two days in!
>>
Tallinn > Riga > Vilnius IMO

Tallinn was VERY comfy, beautiful old town. Riga is the only one approaching a big city vibe. I thought Vilnius was definitely the most dismal and depressing.

>I thought Vilnius was definitely the most dismal and depressing.
If that's it, then I'm in for a treat if I go to either of the other two cities, I absolutely loved being in Vilnius!
>>
>>1272288
(((for auschwitz)))
>>
I visited the three capitals, you can take a bus for little money and te trip doesn't take long
I liked all three, maybe Vilnius and Tia a bit better, so if I had to recommend one, go to Riga.
There's also a restaurant named KID that I always recommend, very nice.
>>
>>1269625
depends what kind of person u r, if ur an autist go to Tallinn, if ur more of an outgoing guy go to Riga

Good. That is how civilized people act.
Hearing this greatly increases my respect for Balts.
