Hey /trv/, I'm going to be living in Dublin for about a year starting in September and am hoping to compile a list of places to visit, things to do, and so forth that are outside of the tripadvisor suggestions. So, locals and travellers, what's good in Dublin and the emerald isle?
>>

People always think I'm joking when I say Crossmaglen

I always worry about who reads my posts when I say Crossmaglen

First thing you should do is get as far away from dublin as you can.
>>
>>1263769
I actually lol'd at that

I forget why, but I was considering trying to hitchhike somewhere, and cracked a joke about how quickly I'd get a ride if I stepped out wearing the green polo shirt I happened to have in my back pack
>>
>>1262835
I'm probably going to catch a lot of flak for this but you will be shocked when you step off the bus from the airport in O'Connell St. Forget every preconception you have of Ireland - it is a lie. No other country has suffered a barrage of multiculturalism like Ireland has. This tiny island nation went from >1% foreign born population 20 years ago to over 20% foreign born today. I knew blacks and Arabs had conquered London and Paris but I naively thought Dublin had been evaded the invasion.

Read about an American tourist's experience in Dublin last December http://theliberal.ie/must-watch-st-stephens-day-dublin-riot-victims-speak-out/

Pic related is Ireland's leader Leo Varadkar. He is a gay Indian. I wish I was joking.
>>
>>1263815
I actually cried reading that.

I'm not even a racist, this just feels so wrong.

Not that poster but probably because it's tragic to lose an entire culture that took centuries to develop but only 10 years to destroy. The British tried to break our spirit, oppress us, outlaw our language and religion and starve us to death, but we persevered. Are the Irish really going to let their way of life die out for the sake of multiculturalism?
>>
>>1263815
>a gay Indian
And? I mean its not like the cunt stepped off a boat, shat in the street, sucked dick and was elected pm. Honestly the only reason I know he's gay or Indian is because the right keep calling the Irish cucks for him being elected and the left saying its a step forward and all that other shite.
Yes Ireland has a lot of migrants but if seeing foreigners ruins a city for you dont travel

Ignore the fucking scaremongering about immigrants. Yes, there are immigrants in Dublin. No, it's nothing like Paris or London - at all. Source: Lived in Dublin for many years until two years ago, have visited London and Paris many times.

Certain inner-city areas will have more immigrants than others, but honestly you're more likely to get into trouble with some drunk unemployed knacker on the luas red line as you are with some immigrant.

having said that, some advice:
september will be the last time you see any sun for a while so take that opportunity to get outdoors for a bit. there are some really nice walking spots available from dublin. don't bother if it's not a sunny day, but if it is, get out and do some walks. there will be plenty of rainy days to stay inside and do all the pubs, go to a show, see museums etc.

my recommendations would be:
Bray head - can take the dart (coastal light rail) from the city centre out to here and it's a stunning coastal walk along hills and cliff
Killiney hill - a simple, small hill, but offers perfect views of the entire of dublin city and then the coast off towards bray. 15 minutes walk from the dart
Howth head - a small fishing village that feels very windswept and authentically irish despite being so close to the city. has dart access.

if you want the experience that tourists actually think of when they think 'ireland', you need to go down to the wild atlantic way in the west. there are a ton of great places to visit there and your rough guide or whatever can point you in the right direction. galway is a nice, fun, friendly town.you can go to the cliffs of moher from there. they're pretty gorgeous on a sunny day. limerick is to be avoided. make your way down to kerry and go to tralee or kilorglan, although honestly your best bet is to just travel the atlantic roads and stop in small towns to have a look around if they look pretty. there will be plenty of trad sessions in pubs in this area each night.
>>
Also, the GAA Hurling final is on Sept 3rd in Croke Park, one of the biggest stadiums in Europe. If you can get to that, go... it's absolutely one of the most traditional irish events we have left and a bonkers sport to watch. If you can't make that one, the Football final is on the 17th September. The event is very similar, but the sport is a lot worse. Still, the GAA is the heart of rural Ireland and you'll get a real taste of what real rural Irish people are like by going to one of these matches. (Assuming the dubs don't make the football final of course.)

>>1264183
Wow, thanks for the insight. If you don't mind my asking, why did you leave Dublin? Do you still live in Ireland?
>>
>>1264262
left ireland because i got a job overseas, so obviously don't live there at the moment.

was born in cork to cork parents, so I'm 100% irish. will be going back in august to see my gran in case she passes away this year - I won't be back for christmas
>>
>>1264262
last thing...

irish people are, by and large, very friendly, but if your first experiences are in dublin you will get that 'city effect' of everyone just focused in on their own thing and an american tourist being 'just another hassle' rather than some great new experience to chat to

go down to the pubs in the west, though, and you can literally rock up anywhere and have some pints and chat away to locals who will almost always be happy to see you
>>
>/pol/ comes in to scaremongers about immigrants
just shut up you fucking idiots and fuck off.
Our largest immigrant populations are from within the EU, mostly Poles and U.K. citizens, and they alone dwarf any other populations
>>
>>1264276
the poles were ideal immigrants when you think about it. they came, they worked their asses off building shit (had two poles put in a rainforest-type shower in my gaf, fucking bliss)

the worst they did was cause some car accidents, they set up some shops and kept to themselves and then when the crash hit 80% of them fucked off back home.

why can't all immigrants be that way?

anyway to the OP enjoy dublin. it can be terribly dull and grey so i hope you make friends to keep you company. if you're in trinity at least you're at the heart of everything.
>>
>>1264271
>100% irish
somewhere, someone just awoke screaming plastic paddy
>>
>>1264273
I've lived in Warsaw for a few years and, being Canadian, have been treated well. The "city effect" is incredibly obvious here as well as smaller places like Wrocław and Toruń are much more friendly.
>>
>>1264276
>>1264282
I speak a small amount of Polish, do you think this will come in useful or are most Poles in Dublin fluent?
>>
>>1264181
You're utterly clueless about Dublin. You've even admitted you're from Cork. It's like someone from Montana giving advice about New York.

The truth is Dublin city center is an absolute mess at the moment as they are building a new tram line. Roads are dug up, traffic cones and barriers are everywhere, buses are being diverted down tiny side streets. What would normally be a very picturesque streetscape is now ruined. Don't bother taking any photos. Total visual pollution.
>>
>>1264273
>go down to the pubs in the west, though, and you can literally rock up anywhere and have some pints and chat away to locals who will almost always be happy to see you
N.Western paddy here, can confirm people will be friendly for the most part.
Would second what the anon said about going to Croke park, even as someone who doesnt watch it

Did you expect green fields, thatched cottages and dirt tracks between all the rural pubs?

Fuck off, Ireland is a modern country like anywhere else. And you as a foreign tourist, coming to Ireland, complaining about multiculturalism? lolololol Get out of here.
>>
>>1265220
Paddy: burning down the thatches doesn't mean you're not a small backwards shithole. Sorry about Valera banning condoms and porn through the 80s, and, you know, the whole abortion thing.

>>
>>1263815
What does the gay part even have to do with any of the rest of what you said. Homosexuality isn't some 20th century invention.

So yes, you're catching flak. Mostly because you're not being all that helpful to OP.
>>
I'll have 2, maybe 3 days in Ireland this September as part of a UK(ish) trip. Other than Dublin which I'm already planning on going, what smallish rural town would you anons recommend?
>>
>>1265220
Where did he mention green fields or thatched cottages? You seem to be having an argument with yourself you schizo.

We all know Dublin is a modern city (although it's pathetic unremarkable skyline would lead you to believe otherwise). The problem is you equate modernity and progress with bringing in uneducated third world immigrants who worship a pedophile. Does not compute.

>>1264995

>>
>>1262835
The first time i set foot in Doublin i fell in love, really; you ll have great fun.
Unfortunately i saw little of Ireland, only Cliff of Moher, Kilkenny and Galway. i suggest you really Moher and Kilkenny, Galway was nothing special
>>
>>1262842
fpbp, I can confirm as a native here.
>>
>>1263815
We are 13% foreign and total 97% white. I live in Dublin and even then I don't really see a lot of blacks or arabs in the city, only the occasional Asian. Although obviously there are arabs and blacks, they herd together, so it's all good.

Dublin:
>Avoid Temple Bar
>Good guinness in kehoes, Toners and Doheny & Nesbitts. Also O'Donoughues as well.
>Guinness factory is supposed to be good
>If you see tired-looking people in Trinity glaring at the tourists while walking with coffee, please be gentle, they are postgrad students and hate their existence
>Harcourt Street for clubs
>Ranelagh has some great food and pubs, you can go there on the luas

But leave Dublin ASAP and go into the countryside.

Wicklow, Cork, Kerry and Galway are all amazing for countryside.

No one ever goes there, but Waterford is actually breddy nice.

Galway is the most fun city.

Cork person here, not a massive amount to do in the city (it's better to live there than visit imo), but West Cork is amazing.

>>1267998
Hope you have around 700 euro to spare every month lad
>>
>>1262842
If he's in trinners he'll be able to afford cans in the Pav as well tbf
>>
>>1263815
Leo is a thatcherite my dude

Him coming out as gay was fucking brilliant, at the time he was getting a lot of flak (as minister for health) because he was on holidays in miami while this scandal about hospital waiting lists was blowing up.

He came out as gay in the middle of it and suddenly all the liberals went from "fuck you leo" to "OMG SO BRAVE YAAAAAASSS". Lad is an evil genius, especially because everyone in government knew he was gay anyway, he just hadn't announced it publicly.

Anyway, Dublin is full of foreigners, but that's literally been the case since the vikings founded the place, it's never been that Irish.

Ireland is fine, globalisation and immigration have been minimal here by comparison to the continent, and people are pretty redpilled outside Dublin.

So relax, it's all gravy
>>
>>1265220
go to donegal and thats still there
>>
dropped out of trinity myself, but while i was there i liked to chill in the museum building because its the only one that actually has that "old world charm" people associate the college with.

Don't worry about immigrants, there arent as many as lots of other countries and ours tend to integrate very well - its not a bother at all for me anyway.

I'd second avoiding temple bar but you should definitely hop on a dart or 46A out to Dun Laoghaire for the day if its sunny. Teddy's Ice Cream is a must have and there's a market in the people's park on Sundays.

If you have time/money for a weekend away, visit Galway. You won't regret it. Wild Atlantic Way is a great road trip but even if you just chill in the city it has great nightlife and lovely people.

If you're looking for sun, our weather isn't always the best but head down to Wexford for the best beaches.

If you're a trinner, your class reps will organise nights out for the entire class so you'll learn all you need to about local nightclubs and bars that way (but a lot of them seem to go for workmans which is...eh)
Bank on College Green, literally like 200 metres from Trinity front gate is a beautiful bar that looks expensive but actually has reasonable prices so jot that down...

ok im rambling a bit so ill leave it at that, glean whatever you can from it.

I really love my country but not because of any particular attractions??? just the people, climate and dairy products really suit me :)
>>
honestly dublin has more of a scene kid problem than an immigrant problem wouldje relax
>>
There's a road called "Krusty Krab Road" on Inis Mor off the west coast. Named for a piss-take but you can find it on google maps.
>>
Hey there lads. Spaniard here. How easy or hard it is to find a shit 40 hours job (factory shit, cashier, most probably kitchen porter) over Dublin if my English is reasonably good? Some spaniard told me he had seen brazilians with an A2 level of English holding those types of jobs. Are they really getting paid dem 9 euros per hour which is the minimum wage in Éire?
>>
>>1265232
>the whole abortion thing.
>murdering children
>something to be proud of

>>1269641
Pretty easy. €9 p/h isn't going to go very far in Dublin, though. It's a national minimum wage, so you'd get the same in cheaper cities like Cork and Galway.

Hey guys, I'm looking into solo traveling to dublin for 4-5 days. I'm mainly interested in castles, seeing some of the countryside, and meeting locals to have good conversation with over beer.

I saw that a lot of people did not seem to like the night or drinking scene in Dublin, and growing up around NYC I'm not looking for a "city experience". What local towns are cool to check out for my interests and easily accessible?

Thanks guys

Killarney, Wexford, Kilkenny, Galway City.
If you don't mind going to more remote places.
The North West (around 4 hours away from Dublin is good). Carrick- on Shannon is basically a village but its one of the top places for stags in Ireland. Its near Sligo too, which I'd imagine has a good nightlife. Nice mountains/ lakes in that region too.
