Galveston down the road is way more legit history-wise. Don't walk outside the tourist areas at night, though.

An oil derrick museum accessible by land via a pedestrian bridge
the very old downtown
Also, if you like ghost tours, this place has 'em. Pirates, Civil War soldiers, dead bodies floating in space inside buildings from the 1900 Hurricane that killed like 9,000 people, etc.
