We're moving to Oregon in a few weeks, anyone have recommendations for areas/neighborhoods to live?
We're looking at Portland right now, we wanna be able to ski regularly and it looks like there and Bend are the only two options. Housing in Bend sucks so we're probably gonna end in East Portland. I've heard Gresham/Troutdale areas are more rural/have less to do. Thoughts?

>no mention of job prospects
welcome to being part of the problem, you fucking piece of human garbage. everyone's going to hate you there, and you're going to deserve it. fortunately for you i'm sure you're such an oblivious entitled cunt that you will never notice how much everyone loathes you. but remember this when in 3 years you start bitching about all the new city people moving in, like, totally messing up the chill vibe that used to be here, man.
Look at Sandy, Or. well-placed between city and skiing

Lol a portland scumbag going off on intelligent city people moving to Portland. You people are dirty, lazy and boarder line communists. Fuck off man, this is why i will never live in your pathetic excuse of a city.

Gresham and Troutdale are your typical suburbs with featureless strip malls and chain restaurants. They're unremarkable.
If you'd like to live closer in, I suggest North Portland -- check the St. Johns neighborhood or surrounding area. It's getting gentrified because there's literally nowhere else trendy to live anymore, but it's still fairly inexpensive and just a few minutes from both downtown and the freeways. Further north, you're basically in Vancouver. East PDX gets trashier the further you go until you're in the burbs, around 82nd st (payday loans, vape shops, ugly strip clubs).
Honestly though, good luck moving here without already having a place to live! Housing is extremely competitive here and requires a lot of effort and even more luck. I've been here since 2005 and rents are through the roof right now, comparable to NYC or San Fran.
Pretty much anywhere in Portland or the surrounding burbs is literally minutes from the mountains and the beautiful Gorge. If that's what you're after, it really doesn't matter where you live. If at all possible, try and find a place close to a MAX rail line, to make getting into town easy.

Jealous much? Portland is the best place I've ever lived in. The food and restaurants are incredible, the live music scene is one of the best in the country, the public transportation system is cheap and efficient, and I'm not even an hour away from some of the most gorgeous hikes I've ever been on. Plus the coast is just a couple of hours away. To say nothing of the terrific weed, breweries, and coffee. Also, the 21+ beer theaters and Powell's. This city is a dream.

What's a good place to live in southern WA, within an hour's drive of Portland? Is Vancouver OK? I want to move to the area but don't want to pay SF-style rents,

Vancouver is fine, I guess. It's pretty trashy, mostly low income, lots of Mexicans and Vietnamese. You could probably buy meth easily at any bus stop. But Portland is like 5-10 minutes away, just over the I-5 bridge.

Lived here my whole life and can confirm. It's actually worth dealing with tent cities and garbage all over the place, as strange as that seems
If you plan on going to the mountain ALL the time, the east side might be a good bet as you would save about 40 minutes of driving on your way up to the mountain. Anything on the east side of the Willamette will instantly have x2 to x3 the amount of homeless people. There are still some cheaper apartments around the alphabet district and west burnside with more to do on that side of town.

It's not even that bad, though they are a visible part of downtown -- it's the same as any city. Seattle is much, much worse.
OP here, apparently I forgot to mention I've been applying to every school system in the Portland/Bend area for teaching/tutoring and pissed off a jaded local? I heard everyone hates people from Cali moving in, didn't realize I'd get it being from NC too, oh well. Got an interview on Thursday for the Bend school system but still applying literally everywhere, thanks for all the helpful info and tips everyone else

LOL a dream?!?! Enjoy your ugly feminist women who have no idea how to treat a man. I only date Latinas, my idea of a city of dreams is a town in mexico or South America. Portland only has nasty liberal self loathing white people, who the fuck wants to live with that? I'm a handsome conservative man who wants a family. Why the fuck would i wanna live there?
You failed to mention all the bums and shit.
