Recently certified scuba diver here, looking to get some long weekend dive trips in. Also looking for some freediving and spearfishing. I live about 4 hours away from Wilmington NC, so around there would probably be where I would want to do this, so I could drive and not pay alot for airfare.
Problem is, when I get there, I have to pay for hotel, which always cost alot anywhere near the coast, and I have to either rent a boat ($$$) or pay for a dive charter since there really isn't any good place to dive accessible without a boat.
So we're looking at ~$100-200/day hotel, ~$350/day boat or ~$80-150/charter trip. Does anyone know how I could make this trip cheaper?
Thanks. Pic is something I took freediving in Hawaii, btw.

Use airbnb or stay at hostels, you'll shave off 40-140 dollars a day

OP, where did you get your certificate? I want to get it but I'd prefer someplace cheap. Heard Latin America and the Caribbean might be the place, but haven't done much research yet.

I actually got certified from a friend of a friend who is a PADI divemaster, in the middle of North Carolina, where I live.
If you're American and want to get certified out of the country, make sure where you get it is properly accredited - some countries have lower standards and their certs won't be accepted other places.

If you go free diving in spearfishing try to get a couple Turtles and then follow one back to its nest on the shore.
A double-T omelette is delicious it's basically an omelet made with turtle eggs and inside of The Omelette you add chopped up Turtle meat. It taste twice as good as a regular chicken album

If you rent a boat are you trying to dive alone? That's really not a good idea for anyone let alone an inexperienced diver. Since your budget is so tight, I'd say just practice free diving/spear fishing (also with buddy) and save the money on boats/charters to fund a shoe string Caribbean trip in the future.

Don't get caught. People do it all the time, not a big deal.

Yeah, that would be a real bummer to go through all the trouble of getting a certificate and not being able to use it everywhere. Thanks man
