Sup /trv/,
Michigan is one of the last 10 states in the U.S. that I have yet to visit. What are some good towns/cities/locations to visit, and what are the best national parks to hike around in? Is it safe to swim in the lakes around there?

Also, thought I might add that I'll be driving up there from the south, and plan on staying there over the 4th of July weekend.

Nothing special here, just go for a dip in the lakes and leave. Maybe check out the slums of detroit while you're there though be careful
Go up north to Makinaw or Traverse City
Go to some of the Great Lakes while your at it too.
Traverse/ M22/ sleep bear sand dunes.

This. Sleeping Bear Dunes is a pretty cool place.
Try the Upper Peninsula too.
The lakes aren't bad, but a lot of them have leeches.
How long are you going to be in Michigan and when?
I've lived here most of my life. We have some decent nature and stunning shorelines, but there isn't much to do in the way of urban entertainment here. Outside of Downtown Detroit and a faint brewing scene in Grand Rapids, our cities tend to be quite suburban and structured around the convenience of automobiles rather than people.
If you have the time to drive up to the Upper Peninsula, you can check out the Lake of the Clouds and Tahquamenon Falls.
Sleeping Bear Dunes in the Lower Peninsula is good, and Mackinac Island is worth a visit, too.

I'd probably catch a Tigers game and try to hit a techno dance night.
Our interests may vary.

Go to this place, it's called North Manitou Island. It's in the middle of lake Michigan and it's a protected wildlife preserve but you can get a cheap permit to camp there for a few days and then take a ferry from the near by town. It's probably going to be you and just a few other people on the island. It's incredible.

That looks awesome. I've been to pretty much every national park between the Rockies and the Pacific (excluding the Northwest), but I've never been to the Great Lakes region. If I ever get the chance, I'll be sure to check that out.
What are the dunes like, btw? I love sand dunes for some reason. Great Sand Dunes national preserve is one of my favorite places on earth. I know this will be a lot less grand, but the fact that it's on an island sounds really cool.
