How is life in the ex-soviet towns of the extreme Siberia?
>>1247173
I haven't been there, but if I had to guess, living standards are quite high and people are generally happy and healthy.
>>1247176
I usually see a lot of desolation in photos. Isn't it due to a certain degree of poverty and scarcity of resources?

lol

Look up "company town".
Now scale that up to a city/mine that produces 15% of the world's nickel.

I live in Tomsk, a university city.
It's a farely good town by local standarts.
After the 2014 decline of oil prices most people don't male enough money and the infastructure is kind of shit. roads suck.
Also enjoy your 5-7 months of snow.
But it's liveable.
Smaller towns and places up north are messed up.
A couple of guys from my former job had to go to northern places. Like Urengoi and Norilsk.
Me and my friend want to go to Norilsk badly... We'll probably just end up in Khanty-Mansiysk.
Living in Norilsk sounds like living in a parallel universe.

Does Urengoy require special permission, too? Sounds like an 'alternative to Norilsk'. Need to google that...
I might make a thread here before doing some Tyumen-[somewhere North]-Yekatyerinburg trip. But mostly I just need to work on my Russian I guess.

I study Russian and these cities interest the hell out of me. I love architecture and urban exploration and I can't get enough.
Do you know anything about Cherepovets?
>>1247857
I really don't no about Urengoy.
It's certainly not restricted for citizens(there are cities that still remain closed for us too, such as Seversk( 20 min drive from where I live).
I'm not sure that I can help you with that.
Urengoi is a very small gas mining village. 10k people.

Tyumen and Yekateringburg are just modern places. The second is infact very urban and nice with little cultural value. The have a few intresting constructivist 30s buildings.
>>1247858
I've heard it sucks)
But your perspective may differ since that's what you are intrested in.
If you'd like some more info or any questions I could send you a bigger message bia email

>Norilsk
It looks amazing. Forget the Thailand /trv/ meet-up, we need a Norilsk /trv/ meet-up

>not restricted for citizens(there are cities that still remain closed for us too, such as Seversk
how is a whole city restricted? What does that even mean?
>>1248069
It means that unless you live there, or get a permit, you're not allowed to go there. They will turn you away at the city borders. It started off with towns that had nuclear reactors and submarine bases and the like, where you don't want the slightest possibility of spies getting in (the USSR had a penchant for paranoia, recall), and the system hasn't been abolished entirely.
>>1248069
yep. that's the taste of the motherland.
For example, today there are a couple of small cities like this.
But in soviet times this was beyond insane.
Omsk(a million population) was closed completly because of a tank and oil factory inside of the city.
