Hello /trv/, I was curious on what people usually think about TV shows like this? Have you been to places represented in these and are they usually as interesting/boring as they show them out to be? Does it usually help in deciding a destination if you're curious about traveling to?

Sorry for taking up time in curiosities, Canadian here that doesn't travel too much but wants to.

An Idiot Abroad is basically just a sitcom with Karl Pilkington playing a character; the show puts him in situations that will be amusing.

The Rick Steves guides to Europe are available free on YouTube and they're comfy viewing but they're aimed at a middle class, middle aged American audience.
>>
as far as travel shows, I like Bourdain,

Destinations was ok, the two guys got annoying.

I find Pilkington hilarious, but Gervais is an ass.

Usually i watch the Bourdain episode after I return from my trip.. to see if there was any comparable opinions.. I don't base my destinations on travel sitcoms though.

Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown inspired my wife to go to Chiang Mai. And she specifically wanted to see the Ladyboy Cabaret featured on the episode

This is bloody brilliant, along with the original British series and the Great American Railroads series. Easily torrentable. Mostly about the destinations rather than the trains themselves.
>>
I feel like most travel shows are just disposable filler with forgetable hosts.

I like Bourdain, even if he is an edgelord prick, because he at least tries to inject a sense of adventure into his stuff and does get access to some places that I probably never will.

I've never watched Idiot Abroad, but I was pretty fond of the Top Gear travel episodes since I love long road trips. It's actually a running joke among my friends that my life is a Top Gear challenge because I spent most of the last two years traipsing all over western North America in a shitbox sedan I bought for $100.
>>

Can you recommend a cool episode with Bourdain? I've never seen any of his shows.

It looks really shitty (just judging from the way it presents itself in images), but on the other hand I need something to watch

I use to really like bourdain until I watched 2 episodes back to back

>Burma
OMG SO SAFE AND WONDERFUL, PEOPLE ARE SO NICE barely mention how much of a corrupt shithole it is
>Russia
THIS PLACE IS SUCH A SCARY OLIGARCHY VERY UNSAFE.

Ive been to both and the sheer amount of politics he was spewing made me hate the show. Havent watched it since.
>>
>>1239617
His stuff is all over the place, a lot of it is just self-indulgent food porn (not that there's anything wrong with that) but personally I think the Libya episode of Parts Unknown was probably the best thing he's done. The Tangier episode, OTOH, was a prime example of Bourdain getting too far up his own ass.

Most of No Reservations is nice, comfy food porn and worth a watch but not particularly challenging. You can pretty much pick an episode at random and have a fun watch.

Haven't seen any of The Layover yet so I can't say anything about it.
>>
>>1239613
Worth it alone just for how many fucking combination of bright jackets and trousers that man has.

Also when he inevitably starts talking to a bunch of young people who always have this weird "who the fuck is this guy" look on their faces
>>
Michael Palin's Sahara and Himalaya documentaries made me want to travel as a kid. Sadly he went to Mali, which is now pretty much a warzone (?) and Tibet, which was never easy to get to in the first place. Also Palin is possibly one of the nicest human beings in existence.

>>1239623
I've seen one episode of the layover where he eats a bunch of pork in Rome and that shit made me so hungry it's unreal.
>>
>>1239619
I liked the Okinawa episode of Parts Unknown, because he kept trying to push his anti-military agenda but none of the people he talked went along with it and he looked dumb
>>
stumbled across this youtube series that features different cities in Asia.

The production value is very ok, but the recommendations are solid.

Departures is a massive influence on a bunch of my trips, the things they see are so cool and its as close as you get to a real travelling experience with professional production.

Have watched an idiot abroad, its alright, cant stand Gervais as I don't like his comedy and also don't like his personality but glad there basically is none of him in it. Karl is also annoying really, unsure if that's his personality or he is playing a character, but he seems never to be interested in anything and doesn't appreciate shit which is upsetting.

Don't like anything with too much production behind it, like more authentic feeling stuff.
>>
>>1239910
I just took a look in the comments section, and everyone is pointing out how there's mostly white people in the video and how none of those places are really off the beaten track
>>
>>1239917
Thanks for mentioning Departures, looks like something I should give a try
>>
>>1239921
>not off the beaten track

That's fair I suppose, but I think it gives at least a decent starting point for getting aquatinted with a city.
>>
Dunno if it counts as a travel show, but comedian Dave Attell used to have a show called Insomniac. The basic premise was that he'd take a camera crew out after a stop on his comedy tour and see what kind of fun, weird shit he could find.

It was like a weird mix of No Reservations, Vice TV and Dirty Jobs. It definitely influenced the way I travel because it got me to realize there's something fun or interesting everywhere you go if you look for it. Even I'm Boise, Idaho at 2:30 in the morning.
>>
I really like "Opeл и peшкa"

2 of the hosts pick a location for a weekend, one explores it on a budget of $100, the other has unlimited cash. Both offer different perspectives of the location. Its pretty funny, one of the host girls is a ukranian comedian

It is in Russian, even if u dont speak it, it is fun to watch, but i use it to practice the language a bit.
>>
>>1239991
Yeah man I used to watch tons of insomniac when I was a kid. That show was the bomb.
>>
What are /trv/'s thoughts on Guy Martin's stuff, in particular Our Guy in India (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sk_SWVmMfo) and Our Guy in China (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_kNcpJPS7c)?
>>
Has anyone noticed that most travel shows are food shows, and food shows travel shows?
>>
>>1241035
There's a lot of overlap, yeah.

Most places that are safe to travel to worth traveling to, the tourists have seen all of the famous things worth seeing on the internet.

Outside of resort vacations, the biggest difference between a foreign country and your home country is going to be taste. /ck/ and people who's parent's were awful cooks will tell you, "restaurants are a waste of money", but as an example pizza can never be made as well at home and is totally different everywhere.

Food is something that can change totally even within a country, that is extremely evident, that even a ignorant person can notice immediately. Common ingredients taste different and basic things like bread, with recipes all over the internet, have techniques that make them taste very different depending on where you are in the world.

Madventures is great!

I like the Simon Reeve's series of Places that don't exist and meet the stans, even though I don't quite like his style. He sometimes doesn't even try being empathetic with the people surrounding him, which is weird for a person visiting such off-the-radar destinations. I guess I like them because of the destinations themselves...
>>
Does anyone know the name of a female travel show host from the 90's? She was tall, British, sorta ugly, long black hair, and always wore dark circular sunglasses? Her travel show would air on BBC and PBS, similar to Rick Steves. Anyone?
>>
Departures is great.
>>
>>1239613
This show is comfy as fuck.
>>
>>1244821
fuck yeah. Old gentlemen's guidebooks are the shit.
>>
>>1242624
Just tried to watch Basque. His white people episodes tend to be so boring, except the American cities, which aren't even white because he always ends up with the ethnics on those. His Asian, African, and Latin American episodes are interesting
>>
>>1239921
Seems like a pro, not a con honestly

>>1239617
Bourdain has gotten more and more political as time goes on. Maybe due to the network change. No Reservations was his best work imo. He's still my favorite travel guy though

I like Josh Gates's shows, they're pretty hokey but he shows some pretty cool stuff. He seems pretty self aware too.
>>
Anything with Michael Palin is pretty amazing
>>
>>1243641
I've made some pretty damn good pizzas. Make five or six of them and you quickly get a feel how to make something that outdoes decent restaurant quality. It won't be the best pizza in the world (probably) but it'll be better than most restaurants.

This show is pretty hilarious, and crams a fair amount attractions into each episode (tours, restaurants, landmarks etc)
>>
>>1246497
This and Palin's shows are the best. I really hope Palin has one more in him.

I like Bourdain too, although I've not seen that much of his work.
>>
>>1239917
>he seems never to be interested in anything and doesn't appreciate shit

That's because Ricky and Steve give him shit things to do. They make him use the cheapest, shittiest methods of getting places, make him stay in shitty accommodation and give him tasks to do that he clearly doesn't want to do.

Moaning of Life is much better, he's on his own and does the things he wants to do in his own time, he goes all over the world and appreciates the stuff around him.

There's still some moaning but that's just Karl.
