Hey all,

I'm flying from Detroit to Quito on May 8th and going home on the 24th.

I've done a little bit of research on Ecuador but still don't know what to do there I'd prefer not to rush and hurry all around the country - I don't need to do everything at once.

So far I'm fairly certain I'd like to see at least Cuenca and Guayaquil, but I don't know what else to do otherwise. Are there any safe national parks that rent inexpensive camping equipment (like Parque Tayrona in Colombia)?

I'll have a budget of probably $40-$50 per day. I'm going to Mexico and then Tanzania in June and July, respectively, so I don't want to shell out big bucks on this trip. Probably too poor for the Galapagos, by the sound of it.

I would suspect this is the case, but look into whether you can get a hostel or cheap hotel in one of the small towns out there, and maybe do a day-trip to some of the park. It is well worth seeing.

Be prepared to be constantly short of breath while in Quito -- I was only there for two days, and just sort of poked around. The cheesy tourist STAND ON THE EQUATOR, VERIFIED BY GPS! place is more fun than the official one, if you like that sort of thing.

I'm traveling there on the 26th of May. Found those cheap tickets and jumped at it.

Check out the Quilotoa Loop. There's a huge crater lake that you can drive/hike to, separated by a few small towns. From what I gather it's a moderately easy 3 day hike, with hostels in between.

Id appreciate any recommendations, I went into these plans blind and am looking for things to do in case my plans of 'do tons of blow and party with other gringos' fall through.

Thanks for the advice.

I heard it costs quite a bit of money just to get to the Galapagos, given that flights tend to sell out quickly and well in advance.

I'll keep it in mind and would love to go, but I'm not getting my hopes too high.

That seems like a great possibility for me, especially considering how close Quilatoa is to Quito! If the loop can be done in three days, I think I'll give it a go. The only reservation I have is whether or not I'll get lonely doing it by myself, lol.

Think I'll spend a couple days in Quito getting used to the altitude, do the Quilatoa thing, Cuenca, Guayaquil/Montanita, and then maybe something on the way back to the capital.

Any other suggestions or ideas?

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
