Australia to California (48 hour layover in LAX) and then off to NY
Do I have any time to go from LAX to San diego and go hiking in that 48 hours?
That sounds fucking retarded.
You're going to have jet lag and want to spend time in traffic and go hiking. Go back another time and find a new flight with no layover. It is not worth it.

i didn't ask ur opinion .. just want to know if it is possible .. i didn't think it was that big of a problem .. ill sleep at the airport and then take a bus to san diego go hiking eat food and take the bus back up before my flight

Well it is doable but it's not worth it. You're going to have to take multiple busses trains etc. Public transit in socal is not good. Find a direct flight to where you are going, don't even bother.

It's 3hours minus traffic, each way. I guess it's doable, but I would think you'd want a car with a trunk for your valuables, not public transport.
I would consider instead exploring LA, and again, get a hotel to park your things or leave them in the ariport (not even sure you can do that?), and go out without a bunch of shit on you. There is certain plenty to do as far as sightseeing goes, several neighborhoods and vistas. If you need something more hike-like...Here's some ideas.
