Trip to Amsterdam

Last time I went to Amsterdam I stayed at St Christopher's at The Winston. Great hostel, very well located. Best coffeeshops to visit: Amnesia, Bulldogs at the Red Light District and Original Dampkring. Best places to go: Heineken Experience, Vondelpark, museums

Hey,
Dutch guy here. Try to avoid Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag, anything north of the big rivers really.
Come to the south. Brabant and Limburg have the best nature, the best beer and the best parties. If you go to Eindhoven you'll enjoy yourself as it is a very modern city with a lot of history. Maastricht is a old city, with newer parts.

The Generator in Amsterdam is one of the most impressive hostels I've stayed at

First two coffeeshops are mad touristy. Club Media and Katsu are better.

I saved a whole bunch of money by staying in this castle hostel. The castle was pretty cool but it was pretty inconvenient if you're planning on doing the late night Amsterdam.

I went and got sucked into doing a Thai massage with a friend who wanted to, ended in sex. I didn't really want to get a prostitute, but since I did I would have rather gone with the hot girls in the windows than the 45 year old asian ladies.

Semi related question to OP's but I'll be there for a 6hr layover followed by a 14 hour layover on my way home from Thailand. Any recs on shorter shit to do near the airport for the short layover? Do you recommend even leaving Airport for 5 hours? On the 14 hour I'm going to try and get really high. Is there any problem with going back to the airport for your flight while high? I smoke regularly at home, I'm comfortable enough with the feeling. I just mean like are there drug dogs that will sniff me or something?

Most airport dogs look for explosives. In typical Dutch fashion, you also have customs dogs that are sniffing for bundles of cash. Rest assured, you can toke like a mofo in peace.

I had long layovers in Amsterdam last summer. 5 or 6 hours is not really possible or worthwhile, but luckily there's a lot of stuff in the airport. There's even a very small small art gallery (which I missed while I was there).

You could definitely leave the airport with 14 hours and get into the city center. It's a quick and direct (no stops) train ride into the Central Station of Amsterdam.

I didn't see drug dogs while I was there in the airport, and even if security guards looked for drugs, if you have anything that is legal in Amsterdam you would be fine.

If you have a 6hr layover, that's not 5 hrs that you can spend outside....?
No matter how organized it is, it's a busy airport, so allow 1 hr to get out (30 mins to passport control, then you spend a lifetime at passport control) to the plaza, and allow 2-3 hrs from the entrance to get back in. So that leaves you with like 2 hrs... There's like a bike route around Schiphol, but if you haven't been to NL yet, you probably don't want to risk getti getting lost during those 2 hrs.
The calmest non-airline lounge place I guess is the area outside the casino.

On the other visit, take a train to Amsterdam Centraal and have fun.
