Hitchhiking from major cities sucks ass. Aside from Portland, which is pretty friendly, most people in cities don't want to be reminded that working and living aren't the same thing; they won't help you. Stick to smaller towns whenever possible and keep some money for public transportation to get to the furthest onramp or subdivision possible to catch out.

this. you're gonna be all fucked and you don't even know it. you'll walk out of those cities faster than you'll hitch. keep money for the bus like this dude said and if at all possible don't sleep innacity. these places have more home bums than you could possibly imagine and they are everywhere, many of them desperate as fuck looking for that come up. if you have to sleep somewhere urban for an extended period roll around in the dirt and find a crusty squat. bring booze.
