New Japan General

As always, feel free to ask about:

*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

Booked my flight yesterday, two months to go woo

Currently studying at a university in Australia, and I'm going to Japan for the second time, this time with a friend, in December this year.

Is there anything I can do to help me possibly get an English teaching job 2-3 years from now while I'm there? Anyone I can talk to or something?
>>

>>
I have booked a flight for July. Will be there for a month. Any place recommendation to find sweet girl as a wife? (serious)
>>
Anyone flown with turkish airlines, are they good, I've heard they are bad with baggage so I might do hand luggage only for 2 weeks. Is this a sensible idea?
>>
Hey guys, what are some good day trips out of Tokyo for a family of 4?

We're thinking of doing a Mt Fuji-Hakone tour but are unsure about it.

We've already booked the Dynamic Tour.
>>

Speak Japanese
Don't be unattractive
>>
>>1232522
anyone who has doen it, Is dynamic tokyo worth it
>>
what's the best beaches to hit up in Japan say around august? I'll be staying int tokyo for the most of my trip.
>>
>>1232553
I actually did the Dynamic Tour on my first trip to Japan last November and liked it a lot since it helps you give your bearings of Tokyo. My favourite part was probably the tea ceremony or BBQ. My only criticism is that you're on a bus for a long time. However, I don't think that will be a bad thing seeings as I'm going with my family this time in July.
>>
>>1232505
Never had any issues with Turkish but I only flied them 3 times (always to Japan). Just carry on for 2 weeks seems rather unreasonable to me.
>>
Anyone have any experience using meetrip.to?
>>

I can't speak for August but Atami is a cool little beach town
>>
>>1232562
Izu is basically the only beach worth going to from Tokyo and its not a great beach

But Japanese girls lose all of the shame they feel about showing any skin thats not their legs there, so thats a plus
>>
Landing in Osaka tomorrow.

Not really much to say or ask (unless you have must see attractions/sites/restaurants/bars) just excited.

Its only for two weeks but I have a decent game plan and am armed with a 2 week rail pass so I'm hoping for a good time.

Basic outline is Osaka->Kyoto->Hiroshima->Nigata->Maybe Tokyo on my way back to Osaka for my flight out.

The reason I'm jumping from Hiroshima to nigata is i have friend/places to stay up there. Also, i've been to Japan once before about 5 years ago and spent time in Tokyo then so it isn't on the priority list. Even though that city is so huge you could explore it for years.

Anyway I'm currently packing, making playlists, and generally getting pumped

Has anybody ever arrived on a tourist visa and found a job in Japan teaching English? I have a cert and everything but thought this would be easier. Any advice? I really don't want to return home it'd be so embarrassing.

Going to Tokyo this week from the USA. This feels like a stupid question but I always forget to ask - What is the best place/rate to exchange money? Will it be in the airport in Chicago, the airport in Tokyo, or at a bank somewhere in Tokyo? Also in general, how do you guys withdraw money when you are traveling through Japan?
>>
>>1232562

meetups is similar, except they don't charge your ridiculous prices and it's more about meeting local people than tour operators. Also had good experiences with the meetup section on Couchsurfing
>>1232660
just spam your resume everywhere, although the school year already started AFAIK. Try an Eikawa maybe. If you get caught however, you're gonna get deported and probably denied entry for a couple of years
>>1232665
I just withdrew larger amounts as I needed them (Japan is very safe so chances of stuff getting stolen are virtually 0). Postbank and 7-11 accepts almost all cards
>>
If I accidently go into a subway gate I don't mean to, is there some way for me to fix my fuckup or do I have to go and talk to a station worker and have them reset my IC card?

I'm wanting to book a trip in November for a week and a half. I was planning on having someone tag along, but it looks like I'll have to go by myself if I do go. Traveling alone isn't my favorite thing, but I'll get it done. I'll probably stick to Tokyo. Any ideas for a first time visitor?

Is it worth packing a pair of swimming trunks in May?
>>
>>1232668
If I get caught looking for work? I thought that was ok as long as I wasn't actually working
>>
>>1232665
I used to exchange back home, but I went to world currency exchange in Shibuya this time and they gave a great rate, about 1 yen off the google'd rate. I also tried my card this time and the rate was the same, had a small fee of less than a dollar but that's nothing. Your mileage may vary with the card though
>>
>>1232677
I mean, they're necessary if you want to swim, my guy. Pack a Speedo instead. More aerodynamic.

I'm going to Tokyo for the first time in May/June (1 week) and I'm creating a list of off the beaten path things to see. So far I have:
>Jimbocho (area famous for book shops)
>Gotokuji (temple with hundreds of those lucky cat statues)
>Senso-Ji early in the morning
>Keisei-tateishi station
>3331 (Art Center built into a former Junion High School)
>Arisugawa Park
>Side trips: Mt. Mitake, Mt. Nokogori

Gonna be looking for more things and will create a Google Map that I'll post here. Any other Input would be appreciated!
>>
>>1232679
oh no I meant caught without a working visa. Just make sure that you'll get one sponsored if you find a job
>>
>>1232505
What do you mean bad with luggage?
Turkish airlines doesnt handle the baggage and loading by themselves so the company that handles your luggage will depend on the airport
>>
Leaving for Japan in mid May, anyone else going to be there around that time to june? I'm traveling alone but would like to find another traveler. Even better if you have a JR pass and are a weeb.

Currently in Japan. It has to be the biggest meme on this board, it is severely average in nearly every aspect I'm not sure why it's so popular here. Probably because it's a Japanese image board, funny that.

If you're one of the idiots in these Japanese generals who keep going back to Japan and not travelling elsewhere, please leave your bubble and you will see Japan is nothing more than incredibly mediocre with above average food.

Probably the most boring part of Asia.
>>
Out of curiosity, is there poverty in Japan? What's the worst city for poverty?
>>
>>1232807
Okay. You are in the minority with that opinion.

I completely believe you. I mean, you are one of the only people I have ever talked to who felt that way, and you are just an anonymous poster on an anonymous image board, but I will believe you.

What is wrong with Japan? It is boring because it is a first world country? Too safe? Too much infrastructure? Not enough drugs and hookers and other degeneracy for you? No REAL TRAVEL worthy destinations such as war zones or isolated villages inhabited only by monks off the grid with no connections to the outside world? No chance of immediate death around every corner?

I will be traveling to japan in the next couple of days, and I'm worried about transfer of my belongings into and out of the country through customs.
I heard about some new thing where they can legally search through your devices. Will my animes be safe? If i happen to purchase erodoujin or other pornographic material while I'm there, will I have any trouble bringing it back?
I'm probably just worrying about a lot of this for nothing but It's my first time traveling out of the country so I'm pretty nervous about it all still.
thanks in advance for your replies.

What is the best way to get wifi or internet in Japan?
>>
>>1232953
Rent a wifi dongle, gets internet using mobile signals and you connect to it as if it's a router. They're small things that fit in the palm of your hand
>>
>>1232669
You have to talk to the station attendant. Had that happen to me a couple of days ago.
>>
>>1232679

They wont expel you, but usually they will require you to go back to your home country to process your visa first.
>>
>>1232807
I'm in Japan for the first time at the moment. I just got here from Taiwan and I was in Hong Kong and China last year.

Although I agree it's surprisingly normal, it is by far the best place in Asia simply by virtue of not being absolutely fucking filthy. I haven't seen a single homeless or black person. The only real problems are some peoples' manners.
>>
>>1232962
>The only real problems are some peoples' manners.
After coming from Hong Kong and China you shouldn't have a problem with anyone else's manners
>>
>>1232962
>The only real problems are some peoples' manners.
Their polite facade is pretty annoying sometimes

>>1232970
I'd say that HK's people, whilst rough, are still nicer than China.
>>
>>1232970
While you do have a point I've seen more bad manners in Japan. Moreso between Japs than toward me and my partner, but still.

>>1232973
>Their polite facade is pretty annoying sometimes
It's not even that, it's that there's a pretty undeniable bottled rage against women here. Men bump into women A LOT. Men don't move for women regardless of condition. They seem especially incensed by taller foreign women. There's plenty more too but that's the gist.

No, I'm not a grill.
>>
>>1232911
How was it. I was under the assumption that it and Darling Harbor were pretty much the closest thing to a guaranteed entry soapland for gaijin, but quality compared to the pickier ones was low. I asked this in ISG's Tokyo thread, no replies, but essentially trying to see what other realistic options I have out of the following that I found through TokyoNightStyle's forums as gaijin accepting/sometimes gaijin accepting:

Naniwa
Kadoebi
Cream Lemon
Platinum Stage

>then shitting on him for going to touristy spots

>>
>>1232981
>They seem especially incensed by taller foreign women
Japanese culture is pretty archaic in that men still think they're superior to women and how they're supposed to just be housewives. No doubt seeing a more confident Western girl rustles their close minded notions.

Will i get shit weather conditions (extreme downpour or if not, extreme heat) during my travel in tokyo for may 30 - June 6?
>>
>>1232983
It was my first time in a brothel but I had a lot of fun. Everyone there really tries to help you feel comfortable and they are really clean.

I opted for the 2 hour service and I got a nuru massage plus the works. The girl i had was probably in her late 30s but she was super hot and did a great job.

I dont know if you speak Japanese but the girls there don't. I wish I could've properly communicated with her though

+1. i didn't even like the food much. :/

but desu i've never been super into japan. i just went because it was a family vacation. that's not to say i had a bad time there, but the best experiences there were because i was doing them with my family, not because of anything specifically amazing about their japaneseness, and i'll almost certainly never go back.

If you have an unlocked phone that works in Asia buy a data only SIM card for it. My iPhone from Verizon worked perfectly with one and I didn't have to worry about keeping the stupid wifi pack charged this time.
>>
>>1233055
Idk what they're talking about, I'm in Hong Kong right now and it's the only place I've been to where accidentally bumping into someone while walking (in a giant unavoidable crowd) will get them to turn around and stare me down, even after apologizing. Not to mention the amount of cars I've seen almost run someone over while they cross the street then honk their horn at them. In general it seems a lot less friendly but that could just be Chinese culture. Wait staff/hotel staff etc have been pretty nice but are nowhere near as polite or as helpful as in Japan.

In April 2016, Jetstar had a deal where you could get 50% off return flights from Sydney to Tokyo, since then, they have repeated the same deal once or twice. Is it likely that they will do it again this April?

Where can I find a job in Japan if I have a working holiday visa? Work at bars, Pachinko casinos and nightclubs is illegal under Japan law.
>>
>>1233122
They do return free deals 2-3 times a year. Sign up to the email list or like them on fb and you won't miss it when they come up. They had a sale maybe a month or so ago so idk if they will do another yet but keep an eye out.
>>
Anyone here have ideas on visas that don't require a bachelors degree? Or marriage. I was thinking of trying to save enough to buy a few apartments and then apply for a business visa to manage them
>>
>>1233133
Everyone I've ever met on one of those visas works at an Izakaya or conbini. If you're a native English speaker you might be able to get an English teaching job, don't bother with Gaba tho, they're shit and the biggest stick up their ass for following every little rule to the T.

Are homestays a good idea for someone looking to spend a week in Kyoto? I'm travelling alone and looking for a more personal + intimate experience, and I feel staying with a group of locals who know the area and can recommend things to do/see would really enhance my experience. How far in advance do you have to arrange homestays? I'll be visiting in September.

I've literally done exactly what you're contemplating.

It's very much doable. My only advice is that you keep souvenir purchases to a minimum, and that you choose a bag that you're comfortable with (pic very related).

I just did a quick search myself, to see what you were talking about.

I'm led to believe that you live somewhere in the east, like Ontario or Quebec. The prices you've mentioned are normal for that area.

On the west, however, I'm seeing prices like $700-1000.

Goes to show the closer you are to a destination, the cheaper the flight. Basic economics, yo.

>>1233291
I'm curious about this too. It all seems complicated. I'll add as much as I know, but I could be wrong about the whole thing.

Couples aren't very touchy-feely in public. It's ok to hold hands or for women to hold onto their SO's arm, but no kissing in public. I think it's easier for foreign men because you can take more initiative. I think it's harder for foreign women because women in Japan are supposed to be submissive.

Overall, you should consider why this person wants to date a foreigner as opposed to a normal Japanese person. Do they really want to date you seriously, do they like your culture, or do they want to just try a foreigner for the night? Which cultural norms do you want to follow in your relationship and when do you want to follow them? I hope people can give more input to this discussion.

I'm going to Japan for 3 weeks and unless I can find some short term work I'll have about $2.5k in the bank on arrival. Is that enough or am I going to be living off instant noodles?
Whats the best option for accomodation, apart from hostels ideally cos I don't want to share rooms with strangers. Are those pod hotels ok or will I want to kill myself after sleeping in one for 3 weeks?
>>
>>1233491
i've been to japan 2 years ago and i'll go next month., Don't worry about the food it is not very expensible you can eat in some kind of "japanese fast food" gyudon price 3.5€ not expensible and your stomack will be full. Noodlle are even cheapest. Most of restaurant are not as expensive as my country (france) half prise. Moreover supermarket like "seven eleven" sold food drink and it is very cheap, not that bad quality and open 24/24 7/7.
For accomodation i use air bnb, lot of price lot of place, in tokyo i think about approximatively 30-45$ for a decent place.
Same thing about the stranger in hostel, japanese are not stealer most of stranger can be that is why i had rent a privative small flat with air bnb(37€/night), never test pod hotel.

It depends on your country's laws.

I returned recently after buying about 40 or so doujins. None of them were strict loli but I'd still probably commit suicide by airport cop if I ever got asked to spread them out on a table. Luckily my country doesn't give a shit.

I'm much more afraid of someone I know discovering my physical porn than I am of some customs asshole having a bad day. The probability of that is orders of magnitude higher.

That anon was probably me. Kawaguchiko station hands out maps like pic related. This one's missing the blue route, which you can use, but because there's less blue buses it might be better to take the green route (it's a nice drive around the lakes anyway.) On the left end of the map shaded green is the forest, just go to the lava cave or any of the other stops around it.

Kawaguchiko station is small but it has an information desk with an English speaker specifically to help tourists. You shouldn't have any problems but get there early because the buses stop at like 5PM.

Let me know if you're staying the night there, I want another anon to help me confirm the existence of a hidden bar.

Never expected you to actually show up, thanks a lot!

This makes planning so much more easy. Do you remember with which interval the green bus drives? I would like to spend 2-3 hours in the forest before leaving again. And how much is the bus going to charge me?

And yeah, I'll stay the night in a hotel near the station, so I could look for that hidden bar
>>
>>1233693
The green line comes around like once an hour. I think they put out more buses depending on the season. I don't know how much the bus costs one way but you can get a day pass for 1200 yen.

It looks like Google has more proof on it now so it's not too important, some anons were calling bullshit on me a while ago when I mentioned it. Regardless it's Bar Oscuro. It's on the second floor, second door from the left. You open that then you see another door at the end of a rock hallway and in there is a swanky little bar.

Best thing to do in Kyoto is to leave and go to Osaka. Unless you enjoy an entire town that is a tourist trap with tourist prices for everything, then go for gold.

Gion is the geisha district, seeing a real one is incredibly rare.

Gion is the geisha district and I actually didn't have time to go there tbqh. All I've heard about it, is that its really expensive.

Despite this, I think the best thing to do in Kyoto is to visit Arashiyama. It is pretty touristy but its really nice and theres a ton to see around there.

Other than that, I would say try to look up some temples.

>>1234130
Number of factors really, but the ones that would influence my decision would be:

Are you willing to have a more uncomfortable flight with cramped legroom and shitty food/seats/service in exchange for cheaper money?

Are you particularly concerned about the handling of your checked-in luggage, or that it even arrived with you?

Look at what you get in terms of meals and luggage.

I'm going with QANTAS instead of Jetstar since by the time you pay $200 to Jetstar for luggage QANTAS is actually cheaper. Let alone the cost of meals/drinks/etc. Plus QANTAS is a direct flight and goes to Haneda instead of Narita.

I'm thinking about visiting Tokyo in December for a week or two weeks. Is just focusing on Tokyo for a first trip a bad idea? About how much money do you think I'll need? I'd plan on higher end restaurants. Are there any essential winter things to do in Tokyo that differ from the summer, fall, or spring? I know it will be cold, but will it be bearable to sight see?

I'm debating on December because it won't be humid and I've read that it's not very popular for tourists that time of the year.

Also, what's the best district to stay in if I want to be close to the night life, shopping, akihabara, and major tourist sites.

There are tall Japanese men. I can't speak for every Japanese man in Japan, but they do seem to like petite women. I think as long as she is thin, wears light make up/takes care of her skin and hair, and wears modest clothing she'll be fine. Of course, it really depends on if a potential date asks her out. LOLWUT. There are about 10,000 non-Japanese people living in Sapporo, and a ton of non-Japanese tourists (especially Chinese). Tourist arrivals to Hokkaido have been increasing strongly over the past few years. If you've only been in the city a few days you really don't know, do you?

Cancel if you can, Stay in Osaka and take a day trip to Kyoto if you must. I really had high hopes for the place but it is a tourist trap worse than the great wall of china. So many people you can barely move around any of the big temples or sites. Everything has the tourist tax applied to it, anywhere from a third to 50% more expensive for their equivalents in Osaka.

The place closes down early at night, some places are Japanese only, which you would understand if you went there, The Japanese for the most part have no grasp of the English language, it's even worse in Kyoto.

Osaka is great, you can catch a train to Kyoto for a day trip, it's pretty cheap, and if you have a rail pass it is free. You can still do Nara from Osaka too, I actually think it's close to Osaka.
>>
>>1234360

He asked a simple question and you gave some snarky answer because it was simple to you. Guess what you dumb fuck, not everyone is some autistic introvert who only ever travels to Japan. Give a decent answer and try not to look like a complete fuckwit your entire life.

>>
>>1234704

He has no idea, anon -- he's only been in Hokkaido for 2 days. His AMA is pretty worthless as far as Sapporo and Hokkaido go.

With that said, I've driven all around Hokkaido during Golden Weeks the past few years. Roads are not crowded at all, but can be slow in places due to the combination of ridiculously low speed limits and lack of passing lanes. It also takes a while to get around. If you're staying at hotels/onsen book now as rooms disappear quick during Golden Week. Also, plan to eat dinner early most days as restaurants outside the major cities tend to close around 8:00 p.m.
>>
>>1234733
Yeah it's all booked, I just have never driven on the other side of the road and am worried about dying/tiny roads
>>
>>1234739

Driving on the left is easy; you'll get used to it in a day or two. Until you do, keep reminding yourself to keep to the left whenever you turn onto a road. Driving here is pretty safe, and the roads are usually fairly wide outside the larger cities. If you're going to the east end of the island (Shiretoko), watch for road closures on the mountain passes. There's still plenty of snow on the ground in April/May so you may have to take alternate routes here and there.

B) Get a train pass, sleep on sleeper trains, and travel from place to place a lot?

I'm mostly going to visit temples. I'm not sure if Kyoto is too big, or too small of a place to stay for a week.
>>
>>1234751
I'm flying into chotose, then doing a loop of lake toya, esan, hakodate, matsumae, Sapporo, then driving from wakkanai to cape soya.
>>
>>1234759
Your first part sounds pretty good. Matsumae in particular is really nice. Right by Lake Toya you can go up to the top of Mt. Usu (active volcano); there's also a trail (Nishiyama Crater Walking Trail) which goes through a village destroyed/abandoned in Usu's 2000 eruption. Your second part isn't so great, DESU. Wakkanai is really boring and there's not much to do there; Soya is just a collection of propaganda monuments. Unless you absolutely, positively have to go to the northern tip of Japan, I'd skip it and go somewhere else.
>>
>>1234754
you can make Kyoto your base and visit other places in the Kanto region (Kobe, Osaka, Nara maybe even Hiroshima)

Why is this thread so fucking autistic? Seriously, stuff like "flying in 1hr for 10 years, what should I do", "I am a 5'3 black transgender Latino neckbeard, how do I get laid", some random shit about getting lonely and all, debating over fucking chopsticks...

I understand it's 4chan, but why? Is it because Japan associates with anime? Yet I don't understand how's it any different from eg Netflix, just another way of killing time

You need to understand that the Japan general has all the worst parts of /trv/. 90% of the posters in these generals never travel anywhere outside of Japan, they are a special case of autistic. Don't try to rationalize their choices, just help the other normal non weebs who want to visit the country.
>>
>>1234822
I'd like to argue that the sex tourism general is worse
>>
>>1234754
>stay in Kyoto

No, never do this. Kyoto is extremly expensive, you can get hotels for 1/3 the Kyoto price in Osaka. It's only a short train ride, about 10 minutes if I remember.

Kyoto is a tourist trap. It's one of those places you really want to visit - but as soon as you're there you realize how tourist-y it is and you want to jump ship. 7 days there are a mistake.
>>
>>1234831
idk, I had pretty good experiences in Kyoto the two times I was there. Sure, if you only go to Kinkaku-ji and Gion, it's going to be overrun with tourists. But there are a lot of quiet places if you venture outside the Gion/Teramachi area for a bit

But I agree that a week there might be too much
>>
>>1234818
Yeah, I'm expecting it a but, but I did want to see the wahoo monument so it seemed like a good deal, thanks for the input anon.

No problemo, anon. I've been all over Hokkaido (have been living here 4 years) so if there's anything you'd like to ask please go ahead.
>>
>>1234831
I was going to stay in Kyoto for about 6 days only because I wanted to finally mark off all the major tourist locations there and not go back later. Is it really that much more expensive than Tokyo?
>>
>>1234862
I just came back from Japan, accommodation in Kyoto was more than Tokyo, food was more expensive, drinks were more expensive, transport was more expensive. There is no nightlife, at all. Everything is shut by like 8pm. The whole country is filled with shinto shrines and shit, look at them in other cities, Kyoto can be completely skipped in my opinion.

Miyajima has a ton of shinto shit, it's still quite touristy but nowhere near as bad as kyoto, and it is actually a fun place to be.
>>
>>1232505
the luggage is handled by the airport. if you have to stop by Istanbul then yeah they gonna man handle your shit. My brand new suitcase ended up damaged once I came back from Turkey and the damn turks didn't wanna reimburse me.
>>
>>1234862
Like >>1234880 already said, yeah it is even more expensive than Tokyo. Keep in mind that Tokyo is already quite expensive.

>Kyoto 1* Capsule "Hotel"/hostel
40$/night
>Osaka 3* hotel
50$/night
>Kobe 4* hotel
40$/night

There is literally no reason to stay in Kyoto, even if you consider the cost for the train. Maybe one night to see Fushimi Inari at night, but that's it. The city is pretty much dead after 8pm.
>>
Please don't listen to those assholes, anon. Kyoto is one of if not the best places in Japan. It's just not suitable for both "lol dude I got sooo smashed last night" and "found that rare miku fig" groups.
If you like solitude, if you like long walks and good scenery, if you like to have that rustic jap feel, finally if you want to have a great base to explore Kansai area, Kyoto is your pick.
Protip: rent a place around Inari, arashiyama or Lake Biwa areas.
t. half a year in jap and not a fucking teacher
>>
Is a week in Tokyo and then a week in Kyoto a bad idea? I'm working on a budget of around $4500 including airfare. I'm also willing to spend over that. I'd go to Tokyo first.
>>
>>1235021
Everything interesting to see or do in Kyoto can be done in a day if you bike. Literally all Kyoto has going for it is that its the one place that wasn't bombed to shit so it still has a lot of originals. Osaka is the much better city in the area
>>
>>1235024
don't do a whole week in kyoto, allocate a bit more time to tokyo and then have the remaining time spread across the kansai area
>>
>>1235024
Why should it be a bad idea? I think a week Tokyo is perfect, not too long, not too short. Week in Kyoto is meh, except if you plan on using it as >>1235021 said as a base for the Kansai area. Even then, it's expensive but you seem to have to money so go for it, senpai
>>
>>1235024
Tokyo has a lot to see, eat and so. It's also very well connected so you can spend a bit of time on the trains to access a wide area

Depends on what you like to do though

Anyone ever been to a host/hostess club in japan? I don't really have that much desire to go but some friends I am going with want to check on out. I'm fine going as long as it's not a assload of yen for just having someone sit next to you drinking your booze.
>>
>>1234316
How the hell is that not a valid comparison, you dumb fucking cunt? It's exactly the same, you'll starve to death in America if you can't use a fork and you'll starve to death in Japan if you can't use chopsticks.

>>
>>1235041

99% of hostess/girls bars are that. 1% in the shadier places will spend the entire time haggling with you to take them to a love hotel, where youll be paying an assload on top of the standard hostess bar fee.
>>
>>1235124
If you're looking for sex its a waste of time.

If you want a cool story and are willing to drop about double the entrance fee (maybe 10,000 yen all together) you'll have a good time one single time.
>>
>>1235080
>How much is rent in Sapporo?

Not the anon you're replying to, but as (a) he's not in the thread and (b) doesn't know anything about Sapporo, I'll answer.

Rent is about Y30,000-Y45,000 per month for a moderate 1DK place. I'm talking full rabbit hutch style, maybe 25 square meters in total. Better places in better locations go for more. Almost all places are completely unfurnished, meaning you'll have to buy everything (appliances, curtains, lightbulbs, etc.).
>>
>>1235028
>>1235029
>>1235031
Thanks for the replies. Would it be a terrible idea to leave my luggage for a night or two in the hotel when I travel out? I'd bring a decent sized backpack so I don't have to lug around a suitcase with me. I understand that I'd being paying the hotel a night just to keep my luggage there, but would anything happen to it?
>>
Hey guys, planning a trip to Japan. Never left the States, never really traveled.

What is a good amount of money to take, assuming I pay for the plane and train pass on credit card, I will have anywhere from $3000-$6000 cash to take. for two weeks.

I plan to do Tokyo, Kyoto, and maybe anywhere between and try as much as possible.
>>
>>1235198
>I will have anywhere from $3000-$6000 cash to take. for two weeks.

You can live like a king. I'm taking around 4500-5000 for 4 weeks, even that is a lot I can basically eat steak every night and hit up some decent bars/clubs if I've done the math right.

Really will come down to how much you eat, forms of transportation, and what you plan to buy. Food is surprisingly cheap compared to what I thought it was.
>>
>>1235201
Sweet man thanks!

My family think I am going to be broke and stranded in a week with that much. I've heard its not too bad, especially if that doesn't include plane or the Japan Rail pass.
>>
>>1235213
>My family think I am going to be broke and stranded in a week with that much.

I don't see how that is possible unless you literally eat and drink like a pig and taxi everywhere while buying as many weeb items as you can and going to clubs all the time while getting paid escorts
>>
Tokyo's one of the safest cities on the planet, right? My parents are freaking the fuck out because I told them I was planning on going this summer.

>>

First Michel Thomas audio courses, then Pimsleur (both torrented). After that, I started with the Core 2K on anki (after I learned the Kana of course)

It was pretty useful being able to communicate with people in their native tongue (especially since many Japanese don't understand English).
