I'm 23. All of the international travel outside of the United States has been done since 2013. I lived in India for about a year and a half.

Going to at least Ecuador, Mexico, Tanzania, Egypt, and India again. If I decide to take fall semester off, I'll probably head to a few more places in Africa and maybe Southeast Asia, too.

Don't think one more semester is going to make a huge difference (I'm already graduating two years late), but I feel like traveling for so long yet again is going to be a waste of time.

these maps are all retarded
>US, Canada, Aus divided into massive states
>Ireland divided into miniscule counties
wtf are you thinking

anyway fml
>>
>>1221362
Right? US is divided by state, as is Canada, while every other one is divided by county. It makes sense for some small countries since it's the largest way to split most of them up, but it makes other countries hard as shit to divide up properly. I'd prefer them all to be divided into larger regions.
>>
>>1221362
>Ireland divided into miniscule counties wtf are you thinking
Lmao.

>I only went to Dublin but I can't color in half of Ireland now wtf this is gay

This map is only for Real Travelers™, friend. Go back to your simple country map if you want to color in all of Russia because you had a layover in Moscow.
>>
>>1221396
God you're retarded.

>US is divided by state, as is Canada, while every other one is divided by county.
It's a first-level administrative subdivisions map you pleb. For the US and Canada that's their states. Germany has states too, France has regions, Romania has judete, Poland has voivodships, for Switzerland it's the cantons etc.

There are a couple of countries where using their largest administrative subdivions wasn't feasible. Latvia is a prime example, see pic related. It's literally impossible to add all these 1-pixel municipalities on the map. For these countries either historical, traditional or statistical regions were used. That's the case for Slovenia, Montenegro, Moldova, Latvia and Luxembourg off the top of my head, possibly more.
>>
>>1221398
Firstly, I've been all over Norn Iron and the east of Ireland. I split Ireland into the traditional provinces.

The world map isn't even consistent.

Some autist like this guy >>1221402
decided that it should be done that way technically

But it's not a accurate division of population density, or geographic size, or cultural boundaries, it's just administrative boundaries, whether the country is tiny or huge
>>
>>1221402
What I'm saying is the map doesn't do that well enough. Some of these regions are divided into small fucking sections unnecessarily in Europe and Asia. They're the size of regular counties in the US. By the look of this map, each region in fucking Thailand is so drastically different that it deserves recognition, while all of Florida is one place. It's stupid and most of these smaller countries could be divided into fewer regions than they are. Sorry if me criticizing the map gets you this fucking upset.
>>
>>1221403
>But it's not a accurate division of population density, or geographic size, or cultural boundaries,

Because that would be absolutely impossible to do. There's no common metric you could possibly use. Such a map would be utterly subjective and arbitrary. Like, Silesia for example, a historical region, is divided between Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic today and in Germany it overlaps with the historical region of Lusatia which is further divided into Upper and Lower Lusatia. So what are you gonna do about it? Siberia is huge in terms of area but barely populated. How are you gonna draw the borders there?
The map uses administrative subdivisions because it's, while not flawless, the best common denominator.

>>1221404
> By the look of this map, each region in fucking Thailand is so drastically different that it deserves recognition
They deserve recognition on the map because they are Thailand's first administrative subdivions. I know you're mad because
>muh mighty states are being compared with tiny municipalities of bumfucknowhere USA STRONG
but it really is that simple.
>>
>>1221409
>The map uses administrative subdivisions because it's, while not flawless, the best common denominator.
I see no justification for that. The map itself is evidence that it doesn't work.

But dividing by first administrative subdivision is a stupid fucking system. Each state has places in it that are vastly different here in the US. Most of the first administrative subdivisions are small to the point of ridiculousness in these other places, with no difference between two of them besides which side of any arbitrary line they happen to be on. They don't deserve recognition because the government put different people in charge of each place. You could divide this by geographic or cultural features in each country and get a far better map. I don't know why I'm wasting time arguing with you about this, since you're clearly just missing my point here.
>>
>>1221413
It's a map of first-level-administrative subdivions.

What about this doesn't work?

Look at these glorious borders that are clearly the result of a long and proud history!
>>
>>1221423
Never said America isn't divided arbitrarily either. Plus, I think that US should be divided more by regions than state. You don't need to hit every state in the Southwest or New England to have experienced the region.
>>

I await your better map with some eagerness.

a site called most traveled people has a interesting system for these divisions they mention that : "According to our members, the land area on Earth is made up of 875 parts. To visit all 875 would be to go everywhere..."
for example USA consists of states but thailand/czech republic/estonia as a whole is considered one region

I'm a college junior. Last summer I went to India for 3 months, then I spent a semester in Argentina during which I got to travel to Asunción, Sao Paulo, and Montevideo for a week each. Then this upcoming summer I'm making a trip from Santiago de Chile to Quito by bus for 5 weeks, and then Bogotá and Colombia for 6 weeks.

I know two decent attempts at making a detailed map. First is on thebesttravelled.com: they have around 1300 regions. It's based on administrative divisions, just like our Real Traveller map, but it tries to solve the problem of little regions: for example, 70+ regions of Thailand are grouped into 6-7 bigger 'regions' that are actually culturaly different (North, Isaan, Deep South etc). On the other hand, some of the bigger and diverse states in the U.S. like Texas, California, Florida are split into 2-3 smaller parts. I guess this is what was suggested earlier in the thread.
>>
File: mwm.png (19KB, 800x450px) Image search: [Google]
mwm.png
19KB, 800x450px
Another option is myworldmap.ru, the idea here is a bit different: as using administrative divisions is too detailed, it makes more sense to select some 'representative' regions or cities for each country. Bigger and more diverse countries will have more 'representatives', i.e. Thailand has 12 while China has 25. There's a lot of controversy with the actual selection though.

Some of you folks have really been all over. Don't get me wrong, I have too, but at least I've seen a good amount of the continent I live on first (still haven't visited every state/province/territory).

I think the point that's been brought regarding the size of provinces is not only limited to US states and culture. For instance, check out China here, if divided by primary level of governance, if I go to either red dot, it should count as having been the same experience going to both green dots. After all, either path would result in filling out the entirety of both provinces, right? There's definitely some differences in what I would experience between the red and green.

I don't have an intended fix to this problem, but I just wanted to give some clearance/validity to it.
>>
I know this isn't the intended purpose of the thread, but it's close and I don't want to clog up the front page.

Anyone have recommendations for buying world maps (for display) that you can pin/write on/dry erase/etc? Was originally going to get a paper Michelin foldout map, but figured it's worth asking.

does anyone have a better map?
Why are tiny countries divided into multiple tiny areas that make up one pixel, while states of USA and Australia are undivided despite being larger than most and sometimes all yuro countries

>if I go to either red dot, it should count as having been the same experience going to both green dots

Nope.
It counts as having been to the province, nothing more, nothing less.

I willingly moved to Paris years ago. I don't get the hate. Well I sort of do. The first Impressions are REALLY bad. However your're a shit traveller (imo) if you judge an entire city on a weekend spent looking at a bunch of touristy sites. Not that i'm saying you did that. I just see a lot of people on 4chan doing that.

It's a pretty gorgeous and amazing city once you get to know it.
