Personally, my top picks would be;
-Mississippi
-Arkansas
-Alabama
-North Dakota

What do you think?
>>
>>1218827
Replace Mississippi with Nebraska. There's a lot of history and soul in Mississippi AND it's fun to spell.
>>
California hands-down
>>
>>1218829
Nebraska wouldn't be too bad, if you're not living in the middle of nowhere.
>>
>>1218827
Massachusetts
Nebraska
Kansas
Indiana
>>
>>1218827
There are fun things to do in Texas, and good things to see, and you can eat well there if you make a minimal effort.

That said, it is a hellish state to travel THROUGH. #MMFFT
>>
>>1218831
>>1218836

>California
>Massachusetts

/pol/ go home
>>
>>1218827
Alabama seems like a racist shithole
>>
I am going to say Rhode Island, just because it is so small. Most everywhere has something to offer, depending on what you are looking for.
>>
Pennsylvania, MIchigan, Ohio, most of New York. Full of shady ass people doing shady ass things.
>>
>>1218907
you mean NYC? or the entire state?
>>
>>1218827
Wtf does next mean?
>>
>>1218907

>Michigan
>shady

We have Flint, Detroit, and a small handful of other problematic cities. Outside of a few urban wastelands, the state isn't in terrible shape. The "Pure Michigan" tourism campaign has actually worked wonders.
>>
Surprised to see no mention of Iowa yet.

>>1218853
>hellish to travel through Texas
Depends on where you're going through. Along I-40 across the Panhandle? Yes, absolutely. Trying to get from one side to the other? 800 miles of yes, especially in July or August. Stopping in the middle? Not so bad.
>>
>>1218921

>little self-awareness
>goes on to describe several states with single-word monikers

WEWLAD
>>
>>1218907
What's shady about Michigan?
>>
I'm a wine guy, went hiking in Pennsylvania with my dad over about 4 days or so. Shittiest state ive ever been to I can honestly say ive never less welcomed.

All I say everywhere I went was white trailer trash, the cabin we were renting had mildew and the landlord tried to contest us on that. Woke up in the middle of the night to gunfire from asshats doing target practice next door, and every restaurant we went to was shady as fuck. I was expecting food poisoning for sure but thankfully it never came.
>>
>>1218937
Between Philly and Pittsburgh it's all Appalachia. Pretty, but you necessarily wouldn't want to live there.
>>
>>1218827
I've never personally had a good experience in Indiana, and can't think of any reason one would want to visit it.
>OK, maybe automobile racing enthusiasts. State still appears awful, though.
>>
Ohio. Wisconsin was also a shit hole.
>>
>>1218897
Providence is actually pretty charming. I guess it's also a corrupt den of mafiosi. But it's got a lot going on food, art, and culturewise for such a teensy city. And some of the beach areas are quite interesting, too.
>>
>>1219017
>Wisconsin was also a shit hole.
Shit hole? Really? I guess parts of Milwaukee are pretty dismal, but I'd expect something more along the lines of "flat and boring" or "too cold in the winter" than "shit hole." I lived in Madison for a few years and quite liked the place. Mostly friendly people, some great food (in Madison, at least, which is a pretty sophisticated college town--elsewhere there's a lot of dull bratwurst and mild yellow beer), plenty of good beer among the pisswater. And I traveled around the state a fair amount, seeing a lot of rural nothing special and just a little decay in the process. About the worst thing I can say is "a little provincial."
>>
>>1218827
West Virginia easily
>>
>>1219017
Ohio seemed okay to me, Toledo was a nice place from what I saw.
>>
>>1218878
>HOW DARE SOMEONE CRITICIZE MUH CALI!?! POLPOL
ironically you probably came fairly recently from reddit yourself. Anyway, cali sucks for backpackers because its fucking expensive and strict. the hostels are 3x the price they would be elsewhere
>>
>>1219138
Not that guy, but as someone who thinks California is a meme state as much as anyone, I have to say that it pretty much has something for everyone, so you can't really shit on it categorically.

For example: even if you're a redneck, hunter, conservative who hates the culture of the southern coast and the bay area, you still have a ridiculous variety of geographic features to explore in less left-leaning areas, including the tallest mountain in the contiguous 48, the hottest desert in the country (also at the lowest elevation in North America), and several other National Parks.

And as for Massachusetts, you will not that they came in first on US News & World Report's ranking of best states, which is based on some pretty concrete metrics: https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rankings

I think MA holds up well in other, less-tangible categories as well.
>>
>>1219177
***you will note

also check 'em, I guess
>>
>>1218919
I was actually curious as to why Iowa is labeled "awesome". I don't really know anyone from Iowa, but one of my friends has a girlfriend who lives there. What is good about Iowa?
>>
>>1219182
Captain Kirk's birthplace, prior to getting retconned.
>>
>>1218888
Nice quads. I would also be happy to see anyone try to refute the claim that Alabama is a racist shithole.
>>
>>1218937
They don't call it Pennsyltucky for nothin'
>>
North Dakota doesn't belong on that list. North Dakota badlands is top tier planet earth and that alone makes it one of my favorite states to travel to.
>>
>>1219223
But most of the badlands, and the best of the badlands, are in South Dakota. Along with the Black Hills and, not that they're special, but it's more than NoDak has, The Corn Palace, Wall Drug, Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse.

Also, slightly less cold.
>>
>>1219177
I went to college in Boston. It was cool for a couple years and the cape is pretty nice but after a while you realize how much that state sucks:

>anything west of Boston is just a shittier version of VT/NH
>High taxes/cost of living
>ugly women
>terrible drivers
>that Boston accent
>massive inferiority complex to NYC
>>
>>1218827
-Arkansas (unless you like old civil war history)
-New Mexico (not much here)
-Oklahoma (not much outside the main city)
-Kansas (same with OK)
>>
Alabama is the shittiest place I can think of. Live here now and there's nothing to do

Florida born master race at least nobody can claim your state is bad to visit
>>
>>1218827
North Dakota is easily the worst.
50/50
>>
>>1219182
>Iowa and awesome
Every four years in Iowa the world gets to see American Presidential candidates try to mingle with normal people at their state fair and attempt to choke down some amalgam of corn and pure butter.

Other than that, nothing.
>>
>>1219326
Wrong
Arkansas is geologically fascinating, also they have an annual squirrel cooking festival!

I love New Mexico; if you're interested in science or World War II history you can go see where the A-bomb was first tested. Also Hot Air Balloons and Native culture can be fun and seem interesting or unique to outsiders.

Oklahoma has red dirt, it's just like Mars.

In Kansas you can check out some old west abandoned ghost towns, enjoy the world's best barbecue, and visit one of the US's most unique state capitol buildings. Lawrence even has a decent music scene.

Worst state would be North Dakota, it's a desolate frozen, fracked wasteland with no Mount Rushmore.
>>
>>1219266

Most of my family lives in Massachusetts. Some of my relatives are in Boston, but the brunt of them reside in the western part of the state.

I grew up in Michigan, but I definitely don't think MA sucks. Definitely better than here in a lot of regards. Nicer towns, a lot more history, and cool shit to do even in the rural parts.
>>
>>1218836
I've had fun and had sex, I'm gay, in Kansas. Good times. I'm East coastal, yet, enjoy the mid-West.
>>
>>1219266
So you've only been to Boston, got it.
>>
>>1219353
Okay. Tbh that's pretty much what I thought. Other than the song in the Music Man and the early caucus, I don't know shit about the place.
>>
>>1218888
I know lots of mildly racist people from Alabama. Only partially racist.
>>
>>1218827
Speaking from spending time in probably 30+ states, I honestly think every one has great unique things worth seeing.

Your list OP has some of the best nature of all 50 states. Dixie South, Ozarks, and the Dakotas all have amazing parks and outdoors.

If I had to pick one I would say maybe WV only because you can see pretty much everything it has to offer in other states in Appalachia. But even then WV has it's own different appeal.
>>
>>1219266
>Ugly Women
Blame the fucking college kids that come in and make everything insufferable for 9 months out of the year.

Boston is GOAT once the college kids all go home for vacation.

Also, you probably should've gone to Maine for an escape instead of the Cape.
>>
Why is Louisiana the only state in the south that nobody seems to hate?

I've lived in a couple different places, and everyone seems to hate Mississippi, alabama, Texas, and Arkansas with a weird passion

But when I ask about Louisiana, they either don't have any feelings or like it, even without going

Is it New Orleans? Idk, most of the people who claim the south is terrible and racist just haven't been, like >>1218888

Yes if you got to the backwoods of every state you will have weird fucks

I have never been to the Dakotas so how can I give an honest statement in how bad it is?

But my worst state would have to be Rhode Island, too small to really have anything
>>
>>1219496
Rhode Island has a couple things.

Lots of good Portuguese food. Paw Sox. Providence Bruins.

Home of Lovecraft. Newport is nice. Historical mansions n' shit. A shitty casino but.. free drinks and you can smoke inside. Narragansett is lit, too.
>>
>>1219500
Not saying it's a shitty state, but I've been to around 30 of the states and I was in Rhode Island for 2 hours, and it was just okay, nothing spectacular
>>
>>1219495
>Also, you probably should've gone to Maine for an escape instead of the Cape.

Can second this, Maine is absolutely beautiful, and Portland is an amazing city.
>>
Throwing my vote in for ND. They don't really have anything that SD, Montana, Wyoming or Minnesota doesn't have a better version of.

It's a barren wasteland and most of the people are, to be brutally honest, a bit slow.

(Can you tell I grew up in South Dakota?)
>>
Surprised no one has said CT yet. It's basically dependent on NY/MA to provide them with stuff to do, cause Hartford/New Haven are total shitholes.
>>
>>1219496
>But my worst state would have to be Rhode Island, too small to really have anything
I live here and can confirm this. If you've never been there, you're really not missing much.
>>
>>1219700
Your state bird is a freaking chicken.
>>
>>1219735
And it's full of stuffy people who hate travelling and would rather gawk at old mansions than venture outside state lines. The whole state feels like a giant retirement home
>>
>>1219752
And Providence shuts down so damn early..when I was there it seemed like a ghost town by 9PM
>>
>>1219266
I also hate boston, my brother.
>>
>>1219495
>Blame the fucking college kids that come in and make everything insufferable for 9 months out of the year.
Are you kidding me? Higher education is half the reason Boston is even on the map. No one would give two shits about your little city if it weren't for BU, BC, Harvard, MIT, Northeastern etc...
>>
>>1218919
>>1219353
>>1219182

I live here. There's nothing besides corn and self-righteous farmers. Its kind of pretty to see all the green in the summer but it doesn't make up for the dryness and crushing cold in the winter. Not to mention the fucking awful wind because THERE AREN'T ANY TREES. Everyone is incredibly polite and tidy. Just don't try and be their friend. We used to be smarter and more progressive but because of the redneck revival now even town kids are wearing cowboy books and everyone has a circle on their wranglers back pocket where their dip can is. I enjoy barn and field parties, always a fight or someone with a truck being dumb. Always plenty of pallets to burn. It's really depressing so me and most of my friends just drink when we get together. Virtually no appealing geography. The eastern part is much cooler. Go to Dubuque or the quad cities. University of Iowa is overrun by Asians in Bape and trust-fund pieces of shit from Chicago. Pheasant hunting is fun. Iowa chops are hard to eat. We invented taco pizza and loose meat sandwiches. 4th of July may as well be a religious holiday. Same with fair week (every county has one and yes they are a big deal). Drive your tractor to school day was a real thing. We have the worlds largest truck stop. Slipknot is from here; I understand their angst. Fuck Herbert Hoover. Fuck Tom Arnold. Fuck Steve King and Joni Ernst. John Wayne is cool and so is Ashton Kutcher. Iowa State allowed a black guy to make peanut butter. We got nationally humiliated by the Stanford drum line at the Rose Bowl. Monsanto, Dekalb and Pioneer probably own 85% of the souls. Drunk driving is easy to get away with. My friend once outran a cop on a country road because he kicked up enough dirt to blind him. I wish I lived in Minnesota or Wisconsin. At least we have Casey's and everything is cheap, except Hy-Vee.
>>
>>1219685
What about Stamford?
>>
nice thread and ima let yall finish but New Mexico is the worst state of all time, hands down.

Doesn't matter if you're visiting or staying for life. This place fucking sucks.
>>
>>1220232
But that beautiful empty countryside.
>>
>>1220233
You mean the one on the east side of the state that's just an extension of the west texas oil patch? The entire region smells like a mix of oil development and cow shit.

Or were you referring to the west side that's full of off-limits tribal roads and pissed off/racist indians?
>>
North Dakota
>>
>>1218827
Alabama. Enjoyed the weather but everyone is borderline obese.
>>
>>1220229
Eh, it's like a mini NYC. Some pretty good restaurants, but ultimately little else.
>>
>>1219018
Mafia has been downsized by RICO. Although the local godfather ran all of New England, they weren't as bad as the Winter Hill gang.
>>
>>1218827
North Dakota, and so far the state with the worst drivers I have encountered yet, West Virginia. Almost ran off the highway three times because people in the right lane don't bother to check the left lane before merging into it. It seemed generally their heads were too fat to allow easily glancing to the side.
>>
>>1221221
This.

What state has the worst drivers hands down? The best?
>>
>>1221268
Worst Massachusetts and New Jersey.
>>
Alabama and Mississippi. the northern plains are easy to get bored in, but not aggressively unpleasant like the deliverance states
>>
>>1221268
>>1221302
Seconding Massachusetts for worst drivers. Massholery is real. I'd heard about it for years before finally going there and seeing it in person.

Best?
Maybe Colorado? Hard to say. You hear a lot more about places with bad traffic and drivers than good. I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about traffic in Colorado outside of a gripe or two about rush hour in Denver.
>>
what is with all the spelling, grammar mistakes, and missing words in this thread? half of the posts are barely readable.
>>
>mfw reading all this hate about North Dakota and I am going to uni there currently

Get me out of here
>>
>>1219377
>im gay
we don't care
>>
There's something to be found in nearly every state, especially if you have friends or know locals. Although I gotta say, there really isn't much in the great plane states
>>
>>1219226
North Dakota badlands was one of the best days of nature in my life. Seeing wild horses on a cliff overlooking coal burned orange mountains covered in wildlife. It was beautiful and there's no way you could write it off like you could Mississippi. The oil boom towns are also nice, clean and friendly people, mostly people from all over the country.
>>
>>1221268
Worst is New Jersey, best is Texas in my experience. Massachusetts is also an acceptable answer for worst though.
>>
>>1221371
Honestly, I think you have to be from the Great Plains to appreciate them, similar to growing up in rural Upstate New York. It's slow and boring at times, and it has almost nothing at all to offer tourists and visitors, but it grows on you. I've moved west to Rochester now, and have plans to leave the state for good once I get a Bachelor's Degree, but it'll always be where I came from.
>>
Illinois: Chicago is the only interesting part. The rest is bean and cornfields.

Missouri: Stay on i-70. St louis and Kansas city are the only interesting parts

Kansas: Grass, windmills and farms forever

East Half of Colorado is kansas with hills. The rest is awesome.

Ohio is annoying to drive through cuz of all the road construction
>>
>>1218888
For some, that's part of the appeal.
>>
>>1219183
He still grew up there so Riverside Iowa still counts as his hometown.

Also you can visit a hog farm.
>>
>>1221373
Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah, South Dakota, West Texas and Idaho all have better versions of what you have mentioned.

I don't even like Mississippi, but Mississippi is better than ND. Warmer weather, and you can go fly fishing. Better food too, and Mississip is not a sausage fest like North Dakota.
>friendly people
Ever heard of Southern Hospitality?
>>
>>1220229
>Stamford
Is it popular because of The Office?
>>
>>1219377
Ok.....congrats?
>>
>>1220164
You should read Getting Away from Already Pretty Much Being Away from It All by David Foster Wallace. I hesitate using the word 'enjoy', but I think it'd make you chuckle and shake your head at the same time.
>>
>>1222711
He's never been to Cedar Rapids tho
>>
>>1218909
Backwoods of NY, is similar to the backwoods of Alabama, you better keep a gun with you in case something happens
>>
>>1222741
Somebody's never been here. I've lived just off of Lake Ontario my entire life. There is nothing to fear from the people here unless you stroll into the woods during hunting season. Even if you're wearing orange some dumb fucking redneck might mistake you for a deer. Besides that some of the stupid cunts I went to school with have Confederate flags on their pickup trucks and shit, which makes me laugh my fucking ass off when Upstate New Yorkers claim "It's heritage, not hate." Overall the people up here are a touch racist depending on where you are, but not the types to hurt you based off of skin color, and most are even friendly to those who are different. They're just honest and simple people who want to live quiet lives.
>>
>>1222699
If I had to guess, some people have probably only heard of it because of the Office, but it also has a lot to do with it being a medium sized city only a 40 minute drive from the Bronx. Besides that I've heard it's a really nice city.
>>
>>1220164
>progressive

What does that even mean?
>>
>>1220164
I love Hy-Vee because they sell Dr HyVee and Hee-Haw.
>>
>>1222776
WWE headquarters are there. Also some banks and insurance companies.
>>
>>1222775
Yes, exactly, that is how Alabama is.

Most people just hear someone cry that everyone down there is 100% racist and still lynch niggers every night at the community klan meeting.

It's pretty different, the only big difference between Alabama and upstate NY, is the complete lack of blacks up there. And I love when people up north lecture the south on not being racist, like Ontario might have 5 blacks, New Orleans is more than half black. That's where I live and it's very hard to say "oh they all aren't that way" when every black you see is crazy as fuck

So no everyone isn't racist in Alabama, try actually visiting the state before you start spouting shit about it.
>>
>>1225152

>and here's my racist tirade as to why
>>
>>1225174
but he's right

>>
All of them? US/Canadian cities are pretty damn boring compared to just about anywhere else in the world.

IMO the only stuff worth visiting as a tourist in the US is the national parks.
>>
>all this Massachusetts hate

Uncultured uncouthed flyover states the thread
>>
>>1225174
"haha you said alabama isn't racist, and you're racist, so you argument is dumb"

There isn't shit to see in MA except Boston and you know it.

Love, a Coloradoan
>>
>>1225503
That's more than enough to justify a trip to MA tbqh
>>
>>1219358
>Arkansas is geologically fascinating

Will admit I with I had my MF camera with me when driving through the Ozarks on a misty morning in August when I visited but that's about all AK has going for it. Everyone in and outside of Little Rock was just rude and/or asking for money not to mention the state is a little ghetto overall.

Culturally it's a shithole.
>>
>>1225503
Marthas Vineyard
Nantucket
Cape Cod
Plymouth Rock
Salem
Basketball HOF

Just to name a few. Theres a reason why the president of the US usally vacations each summer in Massachusetts
>>
>>1218827
Mississippi has some great culture in the Delta. Alabama has Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
Wouldn't rate either as bad.

Agree with the AR & ND, would add KA & IA. Truth is most US counties are boring shitholes, the only thing that saves States from being terrible are a few interesting towns and cities.
>>
>>1225568
hey masshole, how's the DUDE WEED working out so far?
>>
>>1222775
The northern lake parts of NY are okay.

It's the central and western mountain appalachia meth parts that are shitty. I wouldn't say they're dangerous, but they're extremely shitty.

t. someone who used to live in a shitty part, now living in a tiny apartment in manhattan which is a huge improvement over a big house in shitsville

>>
>>1218888
Take it from me, people seem to completely underestimate how many black people live in Alabama. I live here and have been to numerous places in the US. There are different types of racism in the US, but down here it's more of a "closed-door" racism where it's much more apparent up north.
>>
>>1219391
More blacks in the south per capita than in the north. North has a different kind of racism. But you'll have more stories from areas with more chances to interact.

Soul crushing.

I grew up there but I live in Broken Arrow now. I'm not going to say what my dreams were becuase it's hurts to bring up and it's irrelevant nowadays but I wanted to move somewhere when I was younger but could never cobble together enough cash to escape, or skills to be valuable elsewhere, this is far as I got.

Some people are happy here though, I'm just not one of them though.
