So,

I'm heading to the Cannes Film Festival this coming May. This is my first international trip on my own. I already purchased my ticket, and as it turns out I have an extremely long layover in Oslo going and coming (22 and 18 hours respectively). My question to you guys is, what can I do? Has anyone had a layover in this city, how should I prepare now so I'm not bored to tears? Where should I check out, can I leave the airport?

Safety wise, is it a city I should weary about walking around in? Does anyone have any experience in this city layover wise, any stories to tell?

>Layover wise
You can take the express train to the city center and back. Read on wikitravel or the like on what to see in the city. Since you're going to Cannes you're already inside Schengen, and there are no more passport controls and you can freely go about wherever you want.

>Safety wise
It's far safer than wherever you are from.

Your one and only warning: Oslo is hideously, stupendously expensive. Your ass will be safe from raping, but your wallet will not be.

The express train is expensive as hell but if you're going to Cannes I'll imagine that's not a concern for you. If I recall it's $30-40 usd round trip. Oslo in the city isn't too exciting though. It's beautiful flying into though. People are friendly enough though so that's cool. I spent the night at the raddison blue and it was fine, just make sure you get some polse at the airport, shit was cash. I also had success with tinder there. All in all not the worst place for a layover. Especially if finances aren't too much of a concern.

Thanks for the candidness. I'm going to Cannes as an intern, so my money is almost non-existent. I unfortunately can't partake in that polse you referred to, either. I'm a vegetarian. But the transit info is really helpful. Because of my long layover, do you think I'm better off getting a room or crashing at the airport?
>>
I'm high maintenance so I had to get a room. But I did Chicago to NYC via train and immediately got on a transatlantic flight. By the time I got there I just wanted to sleep. The hotel was chill as fuck about it though, they let me check in at 11am local time even though my booking was for the night. Not sure if thats a Norwegian thing or if they just didn't give a shit. Apologies for the financial and dietary assumptions. The airport didn't seem like a place to chill for long periods of time though. I'd bite the bullet and just get a room to collect yourself, take some time to adjust and chill before the rest of your trip. Where are you flying in from?

As someone who went through a long layover, I don't think you can do a whole lot.

I once had an 18-hour layover, and I spent 14 of those hours on essential functions (filling out customs paperwork, going through customs, sleeping, showering, taking a shit, eating breakfast, etc.).

Of course, your results may differ depending on the following parameters:
>your age/overall health (if you're more energetic than I am, you can probably last longer on less sleep, thus giving you more free time)
>amount of research done on your transit location (do you know how to get around, what to do, any cool sights nearby, etc.)
>knowledge of local language(s) (if the language spoken is very dissimilar, you might feel nervous about venturing out)
