Been rockhounding at UDig trilobite quarry in Utah, snooped around parts of Arizona, now I'm in the U.K. hoping to go to Jurassic Coast to look for shells. It's a cool hobby, what are your favorite places OP?

Not him, but Calvert Cliffs on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland is a spot I enjoyed, back when I lived near there. Digging into the cliffs is not legal, but you can find all sorts of marine mammal, shark, ray and sometimes teleost material on the, as well as inverts. SOm folks have found large terrestrial mammal teeth and stuff there, but I never did.

I have a rock collection from my parents and grandparents before them. All from travels. Grandfather picked up a lot of stones during WW2 in India and Nepal and doled them out over the years as gifts for graduation and birthday milestones. Nowadays, the really valuable cool stuff has all been mined out or raped by tourists. But for fossils, there's still a lot of fun to be had.
This was my favorite series on it all "Gem Hunters"...Hope they do another series together. It was travel danger at its greatest, from back alley money exchanges to smuggling through government paperwork, to broken down vehicles, rofl.

From his show, I gather you could river sift for sapphires in Cambodia on your own if you didn't care about land mines.
You can easily get megaladon shark teeth in the Peace River in Florida, and have a pretty good vacation in the area too, especially shelling after a storm in nearby Sanibel Island.

Is that anything like cairnicking?
bumping for interest. Is it hard to recognise saphire while unpolished?
