What's up /trv/?

In a month I will be travelling to Singapore for 9 nights with my partner. Neither of us have ever been but it's been a very long time coming, so I want to make sure we utilise our time there. I have done considerable research over the last few months but don't pretend to be an expert on the place.

At the moment our certain activities include:
>Universal Studios
>Marina Bay Sands observation deck
>Singapore Flyer
>Art and Science Museum
>River cruise
>Orchard Road shopping
>A fuckload of walking
>Buddha tooth temple
>Little India/Chinatown/Arabtown
>Checking out Hawker centre food

This seems like a nice enough use of 9 days as we don't want our pace to be so flat out that we can't enjoy ourselves. But is there anything essential we are overlooking?

How practical is a day trip across the Malaysia or Indonesia borders? My gf has been talking about wanting to go to Legoland in Malaysia if we get a chance.

What experiences has /trv/ had in Singapore? Did you like it? Share ITT

Thanks in advance /trv/.
>>
>>1210391
Your list is looking pretty good, but if I could give you one suggestion:

Do NOT over plan in Singapore. That list looks easy to achieve within 9 days, honestly even less than that. And that is good. Because you WILL come across things you don't anticipate, you will get caught up in the sights, and you will not want to be rushing to your next item. Give yourself time to savour the city because I promise you will want to.

Even planning a few days off can be good. Enjoy yourselves and don't think too hard about a "list". Do the things you want and give yourself time to do them.
>>
>>1210391
9 days is too much imo, you can take a bus from Singapore to KL or Malacca or something for a few days.

Umm, a personal recommendation would be go try the Chilli crab / black pepper crab at 'No Signboard' at Geylang.

I'll never understand why foreigners want to come to Singapore to see all those man-made attractions and tourist traps when they could go and see amazing natural beauty in other SEA countries.

It's the best when they come here to eat McDonalds.
>>
>>1210433
is that fairy cave near Kuching?
>>
>>1210442
Yes
>>
>>1210391
You've basically hit the main attractions. But... go to Haw Par Villa! Thank me later haha. Might as well go to the Botanical Gardens too.

9 days is too long for Singapore, so you'll want to take that trip to Malaysia and I wouldn't worry about it being a day trip. Make it overnight. Day trip will likely be kind of stressful and rushed.

>What experiences has /trv/ had in Singapore? Did you like it? Share ITT

I enjoyed my stay in Singapore. The food is cheap and awesome. There's some cool stuff to see and it's definitely a unique place with the three main cultures. All in all you basically "do" Singapore thoroughly in like 3-4 days. I went for 5 days to visit my friend and I was definitely ready to go home by the end of the 4th.

It's kind of weirdly less developed than I expected. Singaporean are not friendly. In fact, they some of the coldest, most autistic people I've ever encountered. But it was a fun trip.
>>
dont believe all the locals or 'experts' that say 'x days is way too long'. we spent two weeks there and still had things we couldnt see.

- drop the universal studios, dont waste your sg time there
- drop the flyer, its pointless if your going up to the hotels infinityth floor
- indonesia (we went to batam) is a shitshow, dont bother
- dont bother shopping as everything has western prices in sg, theyre rich

- go up the orchard ION when youre there, its a free 40-ish floor observation deck
- check out st josephs cathedral when you get out at city hall mrt station
- a day trip to johor bahru is fine, shop and get massages at the mall there. if you manage, do legoland to check off malay instead
- spend a day at sentosa walking down the beaches
- take a day trip to st. juhns / lazarus / kusu island
- walk from hort park to mt faber point, taking the literal high road and crossing the henderson waves
- plan a day for the zoo + river safari
- national museum + fort canning is at least half a day

- eat out every day, theres food everywhere
- 90% of girls on tinder in sg seriously look for friends. they will hang out with you guys and see the city
>>
>>1210433
Because some people like man made attractions and clean, nice places. My wife likes zoos, gardens, and parks, but hates nature and wildlife type stuff in the wild, and outdoorsy things, generally.
>>
>>1210474
Honestly Singapore has plenty of nature anyway, there's gardens fucking and an actual rainforest nature walk in the middle

>>
>>1210391
I don't know if you're including this with Marina Bay Sands but Gardens by the Bay was incredible for me. Go at night.

I liked the Asian Civilisations and National Museum too.

People give Singapore a bad name but I really enjoy it visiting.
>>
>>1210476
>there's gardens fucking
Huh?
>>
>>1210433
Glad I didn't listen to idiots like you in the hostels.

After two weeks in Cambodia Singapore felt like a breath of fresh air and allowee me to relax before returning home.
>>
>>1210559
Now that would be a sight to see. I guess they release a bunch of bees and butterflies
>>
>>1210391
I would second the recommend above for Haw Par Villa, well worth the time.

Given your girlfriends preference for zoo's I would add the night zoo / safari. Different and a fascinating experience. Also the Jurong bird park is worth a visit.
>>
>>1210453
>It's kind of weirdly less developed than I expected.
It's not as spotless as all the singapore is very clean meme on the internet.
>>
Singapore is awesome. Go to Gardens by the Bay
>>
>>1210453
>Singaporean are not friendly. In fact, they some of the coldest, most autistic people I've ever encountered.
Do explain.
>>
>>1210783
Indeed this confuses me as well. In my trips there they have been amazingly accommodation and friendly.
>>
>>1210453
>>1210783
>>1210786
Foreigners make up 64% of the population. In the retail and hospitality industry this percentage shoots even higher up. You're more likely to be served by foreigners who can barely speak English. Singaporeans don't have a culture of speaking with strangers but they'll usually help you out if you ask a random person.
>>
Amerifag here who lived in Singapore for a few months

To just add a few things ... I would add Palawan Beach specifically (one of the beaches on Sentosa). to spend some time at. Every time I went it's almost empty, and is the nicest one imo. Also you can take the MRT followed by a short bus to the wetlands near the border of Malaysia. Near Komodo Dragon sized lizards everywhere, alligators (crocodiles?), giant spiders, very interesting ecosystem. Several times a night outside the Marina Bay Sands is a light show that I quite enjoyed (and is free).Aside from that, food and walking, food and walking like the others said.
>>
>>1210433
Because I want to admire the Megapolis of 21st century, and I despise nature.
I actually would prefer that most of the world would look like Singapore.
>>
>>1210808
That's just wrong. the population is 5.61 mil as of June 2016 with 2.19 mil as PR's and foreigners. That's 39%.

I'd suggest heading out to Pulau Ubin. Hire some bikes and ride around this little island. Or if you feel like getting a good walk in, try the Southern Ridges walk or Bukit Timah park
>>
>>1210391
I'd skip universal studios if I were you, it's all pretty much the same and it's difficult to enjoy it when you're queueing under singaporean heat all day.

otherwise your list is pretty all right. Definitely allocated more time to food hopping (and cafe hopping if you're into that, there's lotsa gems hiding around).

If you're keen on seeing the country, you could rent a bike and cycle around the country, there ar park connectors that pretty much link up all the nature stuff.

Also, one unusual thing you could do is to check out the few surviving retro playgrounds. they're pretty unique and cultural-ish i suppose
>>
I could honestly spend an entire month in Singapore, and still feel that I could have seen more
>>
>>1211486
>you could rent a bike
Does Singapore have rental bike scams like in other SEA countries where you're forced to pay for damages that didn't exist until after you've returned it? Or worse, gets "stolen" when you happen to look away while renting it?
>>
>>1211707
No. The business would likely be fined to oblivion there.
>>
>>1211736
For real, or is this another "lel Singapore is so fascist" joke?

At this point, I honestly can't tell. Their laws & policies are so egregious that it's hard to tell when something is or isn't a joke.
>>
>>1211737
They are just strict when it comes to cleanliness and crimes. Most people will notice nothing besides how "safe" it really feels there thanks to this.

You get fined for chewing gum
>>
>>1211540
It depends on your style of tourism, but I agree. For me Singapore is a "Nice place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit there" . I will freely admit that for te ay a lot of people travel, especially on this board, it would not be satisfying. All of that said, I found my last trip too short, and am returning for a couple of weeks for my birthday. Local friends do play a big role in this decision. Also plan on attending graduate school in Singapore and hopefully work in SEA after.
>>
>>1211737
pretty real. don't worry, you're not going to get scammed. the people here wouldn't risk their ass to make a quick buck. i mean of course if you break the bike into two then you're gonna have to pay for it, otherwise bike rental is chill
>>
>>1211958
I hear that the people of Singapore can be very picky at highly autistic levels.

I'm more worried that we'll get into an argument over how the wheels are slightly dirty and the pedals are scuffed.
>>
Bump, heading over in June will save some of this info tomorrow. Cheers as usual guys.
>>
>>1210391
Went there to visit my girlfriend at the time who lived there.

Wasnt really a fun city. Saw the sights and whatnot, but apart from that it was just shopping malls everywhere.
Had a farrrr better time in Malaysia and Thailand on that trip.
>>
>>1210453
>Singaporean are not friendly. In fact, they some of the coldest, most autistic people I've ever encountered.

Pretty accurate. Living in a dystopian country where you are encouraged to act like a soulless work robot will make you pretty autistic.
Much like the Chinese
>>
>>1210391
Is Singapore worth it for sex tourists? Or should I just stick to Thailand?
>>
>>1212369
It's legal, but more expensive. Prices start at about $50 for Thais. Not that STIs are a big consideration for women in Thailand, but since prostitution in Singapore is state sanctioned, everyone is tested. (With the exception of those working illegally, which does exist). I'd say partake while there, but don't go there for it.
>>
>>1212385
I heard shit in general was a bit cheaper, because Singapore is poorer than Thailand.

>Not that STIs are a big consideration for women in Thailand

>>
>>1212386
>because Singapore is poorer than Thailand

>>
>>1212389

>>
>>1211742
I like this answer. I did an exchange semester in Singapore last year. Absolutely loved my four months there and am looking to move back after graduation. That said, I don't recommend people visiting there. I tell people to do their exchange semesters there/find a job, but do not go to visit (unless you have friends).

With Singapore you either have to live there for a while, or visit for literally a day. And only visit it for that day if you're in the area already.

>What? why

You are actually more lilkely to catch HIV from a regular Thai chick than a hooker. Now ladyboys, that's a whole other story. Ladyboy hookers, and ladyboys in general, have a high rate. Also, if you take Bangkok out of the picture, then the hookers have a higher rate, but 9/10 going to Thailand and will pick up a regular chick, it will be in Bangkok.

here is why the hiv rate is higher in regular people. Number 1 customer for hookers are other Thai. Like 90+% of Thai men have visited a hooker. Over 70% have lost their virginity to one, this despite men outnumbering women. And the whole ladyboy thing is normalized. Add to that Thai chicks tend not use condoms in relationships, while hookers use condoms with customers.

So Thai dude fucks ladyboy in the ass, catches HIV, comes home, fucks gf/wife,a and passes it along.

Also, it's actually pretty hard to catch HIV as a man from vaginal sex. There is preventive medicine you can take to make it damn near impossible (PreP)
>>
>>1212399
Oh, well yeah I'm not concerned about HIV. I mean I don't want it but I'm not a druggie faggot so my statistical odds are extremely low. I am more concerned with my dick burning for 7 days, or having to explain herpes for the rest of my life. And there are also new resistant strains of some stds coming from SEA.

>There is preventive medicine you can take to make it damn near impossible
There have been experiments done with regard to PreP as a preventative for HIV but that requires you to take it daily for years. If you think you may have contracted HIV you only have a few hours to start PreP, to hopefully be "cured".

You specifically mention Bangkok, is there a known higher risk of HIV in Pattaya?
>>
>>1212399
>Over 70% have lost their virginity to one
>despite men outnumbering women.
Wouldn't that actually make perfect sense?

If there aren't enough holes for dicks go into, then they're gonna have to share.
>>
>>1212392
Singapore is probably the autist paradise. Everything is neat, clean and on schedule. You need minimum human interaction to live. Shop attendants are grumpy and never tried to chit chat with you, even the grannies.
>>
>>1212407
sorry, that was backward. Women out number men. And remember he high amount of ladyboys that further skews there being less available men. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathoey

Anyone got any experience with the Singapore Zoo? Is it worth it?

Zoos are kind of spoiled for me since going to Taronga Zoo in Sydney. It just makes other zoos seem shitty.
>>
>>1211377
I'd also suggest Pulau Ubin. Good way to spend a relaxed day in my opinion is to catch a bus to Changi Village for lunch and hang around there for a bit if you like, then it's just a short ferry ride to the island where you can hire a bike and ride as little or much as you want, keeping in mind you'll be sweating buckets thanks to the weather.
>>
Singapore Flyer seems fucking high m8.

I went on the Asiatique when in Bangkok at 60m high and got a little touchy at the top, but the Singapore Flyer is fucking 165m.

Are you kidding me lad
>>
Hit up the hawker centres, they are dirt cheap but have amazing food

Get yourself one of those tap on/tap off transport cards that will last your whole trip. Trust me, having access to any bus or MRT will be worth it when you need it.

Make sure you visit the water park at Sentosa, it's pretty cool

Go cafe hopping. Yes I know that's lame, but Singapore is one of the only cities where it's probably viable other than Melbourne or something. Some quality hidden gems everywhere.

Dedicate a whole evening to a walk around Marina Bay and Clarke Quay. it's insane at night
>>
>>1214200
>Cafe hopping
Go to the Old Hen Coffee Bar near Farrer Park MRT and get a cold brew. I also enjoyed Carpenter & Cook near Beauty World MRT. There's some good food places in general near that stop, and almost no tourists.

Fort Siloso is out on Sentosa Island, a mega crappy theme park resort connected to the mainland by a pedestrian causeway maybe 200m. Turnstiles to get in, ka ching ka ching. Never did.

There's also a cablecar going over to the island, the landward terminal of which is located on a hill in a park. The park is actually well worth a visit - splendid views and pleasant gardens

Fort Canning is right in town and is on the top of a hill with good views, too. There's some interesting old institutional architecture ... one day up there I found an art exhibition with many fine top name European and US painters, from Rembrandt to Rothko. Quite astonishing and maybe only two or three other people viewing.

Literally fucking what.

Japan 7/11 experience:

>ask if you want your food warmed up
>no, thanks
>"Certainly, excuse me", *bow*
>say your total
>they confirm how much you've given them, give your change
>*bow* Arigatogozaimashita

Singapore 7/11 experience:
>go in
>get water and snack
>take to counter
>girl stands there blank faced
>wait for a second for her to ring me up and say the total
>stands there blank faced
>sorry, how much was it again?
>2 dollars.
>Okay, thank you, here you are
>"Yeah."
>she gives me the change
>"Thanks."
>"Yeah."
>leave

What world are you living in where you think Singaporeans are in any way like Japanese in terms of politeness. They're just objectively not. Sure, Japan lays it on a little thick, more than necessary in my opinion but to say they're at the same level..?

God even my Uberdriver, (young Singaporean Chinese guy) once was super autistic stone faced guy who couldn't relax at all, stiff answering my questions--even though it was all 20 somethings in the car including him.

Fuck I've even had brief conversations with old man taxi drivers in Japan (I live in Japan) that were quite cordial and Japanesese have a reputation (sometimes undeserved) of being impersonal, etc.

Maybe I met the wrong people but I found Singaporeans stunningly cold/autistic.

Im gonna get in this thread because it looks really relevant to a trip that Im planning.

In early May im going to be spending one week in Singapore, then one week in Malaysia. After that I plan to travel more around SEA but Im not sure where to go next.

How safe are the Philippines?

Would a train from Khuala Lumpur to Bangkok be a good starting point?

Are Cambodia / Vietnam safe to travel around in?

Is renting a motorcycle a good idea?

yeah, it's the basement Takashimaya event hall Xmas extravaganza. As always, their goods are very upmarket in quality, but they obviously design the Xmas decorattion in accordance with Singapore taste.

I've seen their stores in Japan and their appearance is quite different

OP, it seems with faster moving boards here like /trv/ if the thread lives long enough they delete the images after ... dunno, three weeks? We'll see when the BKK whore vanishes.

This is a very long term thread for /trv/ but I've been nudging it along to keep it alive because I want to see what pics you other fags have of Singapore. Rather poor show so far, I must say. To date, one monitor lizard.

OK this pic is Singapore at sunset from the Sands Marina rooftop. There's a bar up there that has (or maybe did have?) a sunset happy hour with free elevator access. Need to be dressed OK and buy a drink, but the view's the same as the observation platform.

You can get arrested for chewing gum
You can get arrested for littering
You can get fined for possessing a specific type of fruit in a train
You can get arrested or fined for forgetting to flush a toilet
Jaywalking tickets are actually very much a real and normal occurrence

You might think that all of the above are just minor transgressions, and while you wouldn't be wrong, it's incredibly stifling. Singapore is a very unforgiving country. Even if you know better than to do these things, it's incredibly nerve-wracking to have a law for every little thing.

You are also considered a lower lifeform depending on your education, career, and wealth. Elitism is very prevalent in this country. In many countries, going through trade school to become an electrician is very respectable, but in Singapore, you would be considered lower-class scum to the prestigious university graduates who are working as lawyers, doctors, engineers, etc.
>>
>>1221131
Wasn't it only importing chewing gum that was punishable?

Otherwise sounds fine to me.
>>
>>1221131
>not enjoying the police state

Damn dude, I'm an American and appreciate muh freedum as much as anyone, but you have to appreciate Singapore for what it is. It's clean, safe, and orderly. If you're not autistic enough to enjoy following the rules, this certainly isn't the place to be. Otherwise it's wonderful.

I prefer the charm of Japan, but this is pretty close, as close as a true melting pot can be, I suspect.
>>
>>1221131
Chewed gum a lot and jaywalked plenty of times in front of cops never got in trouble. Toilet thing isn't really enforced either. But if you are so upset that they don't want you to litter, bring something that smells like shit onto a confined train, or have a problem flushing the toilet, I don't know what to say. Other than the first twenty minutes of being there, I felt the same as I did during my many months in Singapore as I have while living in Canada.

Elitism is definitely prevalent though, same with racism.

Does anyone have any experience working as an expat in Singapore? I (UK, mid-20s) have the opportunity to transfer over there and I'm seriously considering it for a year or two.

I'd be making around S$60,000 - would I be able to afford a decent lifestyle over there?
>>
>>1222320
I haven't got any experience living as an expat, but I grew up in Singapore. One year sounds pretty alright, any longer and you'd wanna fucking shoot yourself.

Expect 1000 bucks for rent at least. Utilities aren't too bad. Internet is dirt cheap. Food is even cheaper, and it's really good, but alcohol will fuck with your wallet pretty hard.

You'd be alright with 60k, at least last I checked.

You have to be really prepared for culture shock. The accent is atrocious, and absolutely unintelligible at first. It's filled with retarded bits of slang and useless words.

Seriously though, have fun, and don't stay there too long.

To be a sla .. (er sorry precious snowflakes) "guest worker" is morally beneficial for those of a different passport

>>1222320
Yeah, SGD60k will be fine for a decent lifestyle but you won't be able to save any money so the decision to go will be either for career advancement or the lifestyle.

Employers there are VERY demanding of hours, probably longer than in Japan, so if it's a transfer within the company, I'd suggest telephoning someone in the office there and asking about the usual work hours. See whether what's left outside will provide for you a have a lifestyle.

Where people write Singapore sux to live there it's because there's no worthwhile culture.

Okay, finally free. It's been a fucking crazy week with a lot of delays but I'll try and go over all the major places we went to (traveled with girlfriend). I've really got no idea how to write this out so I'll just go in order and say a little about each thing. I liked pretty much everything so i won't be much help in terms of what to skip.

First off, don't bother with getting a taxi into the city from the airport. I did it and it cost about $30. Look around for a shuttle bus that runs frequently 24 hours a day and will cost you $9 per person and will drop you off right at your hotel.

Get yourself a tourist SIM. I paid $30 for about 15GB of data, but then my girlfriend found one that gave her fuckin 100GB for the same price.

Also definitely get yourself an ez-link transport card. There are tourist options available that simply run for certain lengths, but we just bought a card normally ($5) and loaded $20 of value onto it. This card covers buses and trains and that 20 bucks covered us our entire 10 days without needing to top up. Most of our rides cost like 80 cents to $1.50 depending on distance.

By the way, you CAN get a train to and from the airport into the city for about $2.50 but i still recommend the shuttle as it's much faster (train takes 45 minutes just to get to a station where you will likely have to change lines anyway) and more convenient.

>Orchard Road
Fucking busy but pretty cool, tons of malls. Like more than tons. Not essential if you aren't looking to spend lots of money on stuff, but spectacle of some of the malls is cool enough to warrant a look.

>Clarke Quay
A personal highlight for me mainly because our hotel was nearby. Great little shit bar with all sort of drinks, place has a great vibe at night but again depends what kind of holiday you're after. It's got an MRT station so it's easy to get to.

Continued below
>>
>>1234519
>Singapore Flyer
Great view all directions. exactly what you'd expect honestly. Takes about 25 mins to go around, it's pretty cool, my legs got a bit wobbly at times. You will probably share a pod with other people, we had a family in ours. They are quite big and fit 28 people. If there's anything you were looking to cut out, this could be one because it cost about $23 and offers more or less the same experience as Marina bay sands observation deck, although it doesn't offer 360° views.

It might be worth doing the flyer at night. Singapore is 50 Millon times better at night.

>Sentosa Island
Where to start, some of the coolest things were here. We paid for a bundle including unlimited cable car rides for one day, Universal entry and aquarium entry. We rode the cable car several times, it's an attraction in itself.

Went to MegaZip park, which has a few different activities, but we did the ParaJump (jump off a platform about 20m up and a harness simulates landing with a parachute) and the zipline down onto the beach, which is amazing.

Also did Skyline Luge, which is a neat little downhill course where you ride a small cart downhill and around corners. Then at the bottom there is a chairlift that takes you back to the top. 3 rides for $25 makes it quite cheap, and while it's a family thing, it's fun as shit.

Aquarium was underwhelming. We got suckered in from hearing it was the biggest in the world, but there's nothing special about it. Skippable.

Make sure to take time to just walk around and absorb the sights. Sentosa is pretty beautiful.

>Marina Bay Sands observation deck
Also what you'd expect, not necessarily a bad thing. Similar price to Flyer but the appeal of the building makes it cool. Not much up there besides a souvenir shop, sells drinks. Might spend only 15 mins up there.

But the view of gardens by the bay and the city are spectacular. Also something that might be worth doing at night (did this and the flyer in the day)
>>
>>1234532
>Little India
Great place to see a little culture. I immediately noticed it smelt a little different to Singapore as i walked into the Little India MRT station. But walking through it is super cool, it's like India i guess. There is a mosque there that's beautiful, believe it was posted earlier in the thread. Got some great butter chicken at some restaurant too.

>Gardens by the Bay
One of my highlights easily. Make sure you go as the sun is about to set and get the best of both worlds, because sunset to night in this place is stunning. Seriously, this place with Marina Bay Sands standing over it at night left me speechless, and i never expected to like it THIS much.

Yes, it's just a garden at the end of the day but the tree towers beautiful. And it's free! There is a cloud forest and flower thing there which we were too late to enter unfortunately, they close at 8pm. If you go to the cloud forest in particular, post how it was, as i very much wanted to go here.

>River cruise
Do it. At night. Some of the best views I've seen in my life. Cost $18 for us from near Bay Sands to Clarke Quay.

>Universal Studios
If you're into rides and theme parks, do it. Ignore the price and have fun. We paid extra for the express pass, which quite literally lets you walk almost to the front using a VIP line instead of waiting. There was a roller coaster with an 80 minute wait time that we walked on almost right away. The express on top your entry cost will be a lot but i don't regret it for a second.

The Battlestar Galactica coasters are great, but the real fucking shocker for me was the Transformer ride. It's an indoor coaster with 3D glasses looking at a screen, so i wasn't expecting anything but WOW. It caught us both very off guard and was probably our favourite. The other favourite was The Mummy coaster. Indoor coaster that puts you into darkness and stuff, it's fun.
>>
>>1234536
In terms of the major attractions that's about it for what we could fit in. But if you're after any food or mall stuff I'll do a bit on that too

>VivoCity mall
We went here probably 4 or 5 times. For one, you have to go here to get the monorail over to Sentosa island (it's right across from it) but we also ate a lot here for dinner and saw a couple of movies too. Logan is fantastic by the way.

Jamie's Italian was pretty good, a little pricey though. There is a great churro place hidden down on the bottom level, but the best place for us was two restaurants facing the water. The Chop House had great everything, Bailey's cheesecake was mint son. But there is this Spanish restaurant called Serenity. There was a lady handing out $20 discount coupons to everyone in the mall (they had just reopened) so that's the only reason we went there, but their food was fucking awesome.

>Chili's
Some American/Mexican place which i don't have back in Australia, but we went there twice and it was great both times. There's one on Sentosa island right outside Universal but we went to the Clarke Quay one.

>Jumbo Seafood
Place is SUPER popular and has world famous chili crab (also one of Singapore's national dishes) but it will set you back $75. But we went for it and as someone who doesn't really like seafood, it was nice but insanely messy. Provided bibs will not be enough.

>Suntec City mall
Went here once, mainly putting it down because there's this little food court called PasarBella which i can only describe as, arty? It's colours and bright lights everywhere, i guess many would call it hipster. But there's several little food places in there and a bar too.

>Hooters
Actually wasn't bad. Got served by a dude. Cheese sticks are good.

>Bak kut teh
Ultra Singaporean place, very very famous. There's one across the road from Central mall at Clarke quay. Their pork ribs are nice but i recommend skipping the pig's intestines.
>>
>>1234539
How could i forget

>Raffles Hotel
Went there just to get Singapore Sling, it was invented in raffles hotel and costs $30 for one single cocktail! I don't even personally like Slings (it's gin i think) but Raffles is just beautiful. So old and classy. In the bar there are free bags of peanuts, and they literally encourage you to throw the shells on the floor. Seriously, the floor was absolutely covered in peanut shells.

There were a few things we didn't get to do

>Nature walk
There a trail that takes you through an inner city rainforest, it's like a 3 hours walk. We wanted to do it but had no time.

>Cloud forest
Mentioned earlier

>Anything to the east of Marina Bay
We barely went over there. There is an artificial beach and a red light district in Geylang however if that interests you.

>Chinatown
Even though it's only one station from Clarke Quay we never got around to it
So we certainly covered a lot of touristy things, but no regrets as they are all a great time. I'm sure I've missed a few things here and there and I'll put them here should they come back to me. But feel free to ask any questions about anything else, or for more on something i wrote. I have the thread bookmarked so I'll see it hopefully fairly soon after posted.

Can't wait for this one of the main things been planning on, will check out at sunset then.

>Universal Studios
We've got to every universal world wide so far, universal tokyo the worst just due to lines. Even when it's the same rides like this sounds like will check out again. Just one of those things need to get out of the way at any new location for me personally. Always go express.

>VivoCity mall
Brilliant, like I said chinatown so close as for this as well.

>Chili's
They used to have this in Australia m8 lol, Maybe that's me showing my age but 28. Used to eat it a fair bit.

>Food places
Will try check out the mall, and some hawker markets. Done hooters plenty in thailand and America.

>>1234542

>Raffles Hotel
We also used to have the peanut thing here before some bitch sued lonestar. Will check out just for the sights but.

>Nature
Was going to check out the botanic gardens and that, hopefully check out the nature walk.

>Chinatown
Staying here so all good.

Sim cards I usually buy one on arrival but we get an unlimited data and use phone with our hotel.. So I might pay the $30 for at taxi to a hotel before picking that up then we can navigate the buses and trams easier with apps and save having to purchase one for this trip.

Was planning on normal card as well, didn't want the tourist thing running out and having to retop. There for 10 days as well.

Cheers for all this mate.

No problem mate, glad to help.

As for Chili's being in Australia in the past, i didn't realise. I'm 23 so maybe it shut when i was young, or more likely was never in my city of Newcastle

Make sure to go to the Arab District. It's got some hipstery shops and cafes and great restaurants. Make sure you eat most of your meals at hawkers. Hawkers are literally one of the best things about Singapore and they are a big part of the country's culture.

If you have time, go to Pulau Ubin far a (half) day if you like outdoors stuff.

A block away from Clarke Quay is Boat Quay. Both are loaded with restaurants, bars, and clubs. Go out for some drinks at Boat Quay some evenings during happy hour. There is a much nicer view here as you can see city hall and Marina Bay Sands. Pretty sure the riverside view at Clarke Quay is just another mall lol.

Singapore also has a good craft beer scene. If that's what your interested in, try to check it out. Singapore also has some neat and quirky bars that can be worth looking into

It used to be, but that was the 90s. Still very shiny but most of the infrastructure is from then.

Right across the street from vivo/harbourfront is a great hawker centre next the bus interchange. Great food. Try anything indian.

For more awesome and cheap seafood like chilli/black pepper crab or bbq sting ray you should head down to newton circus. Theres an mrt station there. Definitely a must go for great food.

Satay is also a must try.

>You can get arrested for chewing gum
Dude this is like some urban legend from the 70s. i've never heard of anyone being arrested for chewing gum. In fact you can buy medical gum at pharmacies (for quitting smoking). You can also bring in regular gum from malaysia, nobody really cares, unless you blatantly bring a fuck ton of it. And the most they'd do is confiscate it, not arrest you

>You can get arrested for littering
fined, yes. Or be made to do community service (ie be made to sweep the park for a couple of hours) Arrested, no, unless you assault the officer.

>You can get fined for possessing a specific type of fruit in a train
yes, durian, because the smell seeps into the air vents and is very hard to remove

>You can get arrested or fined for forgetting to flush a toilet
another "law" that literally nobody enforces

>Jaywalking tickets are actually very much a real and normal occurrence
i've lived here for 27 years and I've never been fined for jaywalking, nor have I heard of people getting fined for jaywalking.

tr:dr dont act like a douche or inconvenience people and the police generally will close one eye to it. (unless its drugs). Despite being known for harsh laws, there is some unspoken leeway

Probably just Newcastle, we had one in gong and all the chicks I went to highschool worked their and continually put cases of spirits and wine out the back for weeks when they stopped getting paid. Franchise went bankrupt shortly after in Australia I think.

>>1235533
Pulau Ubin I had down as we'll. Starting to think there might be a bit much to cram in 8 days when IRL people where saying that would be to much. Had planned to rent a car for a day and drive over to Malay as well for kicks.

Will write Boat Quay down, only 14 minute walk from our hotel.

>>1235835
Thanks mate, will add that to the hawker list. So much for 8 days being enough.

>>1235861
Glad this is so close to the hotel, wanted to spend afternoon here but thinking might come past a 2nd time.
>>
>>1235533
I stayed in a hotel on Boat Quay and had the best view of parliament, Fullerton Hotel and MBS towering over both from behind. It was amazing.

What's the deal with sport in Singapore?

I went there and saw a cricket club in a pretty prominent location in the CBD, and coming home to Australia, a massive cricket country, I've never even noticed their presence in the sport. I also just saw a Singapore Sevens rugby tournament on tv with a massive crowd

Singapore is also cool from an architectual standpoint. Because they lacked the space for their garbage, they created an island to store garbage and placed green space over it.

>In a month I will be travelling to Singapore for 9 nights with my partner.
>my partner
When people say "partner," that usually means they're gay, or they're dating someone with gender identity issues.

If that's the case, then no problem, I'm happy for you. But just remember that Singapore doesn't take too kindly to non-cis, non-hetero relationships. In fact, male homosexuality is illegal there.

Where's this meme come from? What country thinks partner means gay?

I say partner online as well because if I said 'the misses' people probably wouldn't understand.

>What country thinks partner means gay?
Most English-speaking countries.

Anyone comfortable with their sexuality says "my girlfriend" or "my boyfriend."

"My partner" is usually used by people with something to hide, or by pretentious people who think they're too good to use words like "boyfriend/girlfriend."
>>
>>1240053
This is stupid. Yes it can be used in that context but it's hardly exclusive
>>
>>1240053
>or by pretentious people who think they're too good to use words like "boyfriend/girlfriend."

Yeah, no.
>>
>>1240143
Not him, but in the UK that's definitely the case.
>>
>>1240154
Not him, but here in Canada you only say partner if you're gay or extremely pretentious. Other than gay couples, I've legit only seen/heard a few entitled snobs use the term.
>>
>>1240209
I have heard it pretty commonly when talking to strangers.
>>
>>1240053
>Anyone comfortable with their sexuality says "my girlfriend" or "my boyfriend."

What? Anyone comfortable with their sexuality doesn't need to say girlfriend or boyfriend. Who gives a fuck if a stranger might think your gay or not.

In Australia its genuinely accepted to say partner. When I hear anyone say my girlfriend it feels like high school.

Considering OP is also Australian I'll accept it might not be outside us, even thought in the U.S I always refer to my misses as partner when introducing her.

OP here, can confirm. I'm comfortable enough that i didn't even think about it when i wrote partner. May be Australian so who knows.

>>1241489

>>
>>1241489
Where are you from and why are you moving there? I'm assuming work, so did a transfer opportunity come up, or did you just move after a few years of work experience?

I live in Washington state in the US. Yes, work is why and technically a transfer opportunity came up. I'm in the Navy, so I got a new set of orders and will live out there for 18 months plus or minus 3. We went there on our last deployment but it was only for a few days.
