Spending 2 weeks in Iceland

Iceland is about as expensive as any other country in western Europe, however since everything worth seeing is innawoods, you're going to need special equipment to see it. This means either renting the equipment yourself or hiring a guided tour.

Tours are a little pricey but definitely worth it. I found a pretty good one that where we went ATVing up the side of the mountain and then went spelunking in a lava tube (about $300USD but totally worth it).

I would make it a point to splurge on just one of those adventure tours (as it is what Iceland is known for), however in order to save money the rest of the time, I would recommend checking out its Viking History sites. The first parliament in the world met out by a bunch of old rocks in the middle of nowhere. It's pretty awesome.

Also, read up on your Viking Lore (hagiographies as viking history in Iceland moved from oral tradition to written word only after Christianity was introduced). All of Iceland is littered with the sites mentioned in the sagas and it's an amazing experience to see the places after you've read up on it.

If you insist on staying only in Reykjavik, then you're definitely going to be spending a lot of money. Check out Bar8, they've got cheap beer, no one speaks English, and they have cool shit all over the walls/ceiling. If you're looking for something a little more touristy, right around the corner is the Big Lebowski Bar, another hidden gem.

$2k in 2 weeks is a pretty liberal budget if you're not including airfare in that. I think you'll have a pretty good time. Iceland is beautiful. You might not want to come home.

Thank you for for your response, I havent loomed into any of those tours other than the golden circle bus tour, which idk if its worth.

Is there any way to find cheap places to stay? Around 20 per night would be ideal. Air bnb is what im looking at right now.

Stay in a hostel, theres plenty around. That way you'll meet people and locals. Some hostels may even lay on a tour or excursion or a get-together in a local pub.

Hostels also tend to do breakfasts too, that way you keep your budget down and know your gonna get one square meal a day so you can spend more on activities.

While this thread is up/active does anyone have any experiences hitch hiking or trekking through iceland?

I'm planning on going in three weeks, for one week.

$100 to fly to DC, $210 to fly out of DC to Reykjavik. Bringing all my gear and planning on camping as much as I can.
