Do travel agencies work? I went to one today and they told me a trip I had already planned out was gonna be at least 7000 more then my estimate
They can be useful, but you have to remember they're paid shills for certain airlines/destinations. They have lots of knowledge but also ulterior motives.

That is a very well phrased and accurate explanation. Pretend like I said it.

when i go through with a budget airline that i use (wowair) it allows you to actually book rooms and stuff while checking out
they're based in iceland, and they have this option that if you stay in iceland for an extra day in between your connecting flights, you can book neat tours and that too
so there's really no need for that shenanigans as most airlines will have semi-inclusive stuff ready in your face when you're trying to buy your airfare
Travel agencies are always going to cost more because you're paying a person to do something for you. You're trading time spent for money spent.
Travel agents also get kickbacks and commission for booking places so of course they're going to go for the more expensive options.
For the majority of travel, IMO, the internet has rendered travel agencies redundant but their will always be people who would rather pay someone to do the leg work for them.
most of it comes down to planning
similar as the way there's airline groups like skyteam and star alliance, many hotel, car rental and even tour companies operate under different brands in each area, or have certain regional agreements that are more visible to agents
so on a multiple stage trip there is a value agents can provide
I'd think most posters that actually travel can find as good a deal, but travel agents can often find as good a deal after their commission for less inclined travelers
their power is certainly declining, and I welcome more freedom to the market of travel

Travel agents can also be handy at planning trips for large groups. There's always going to be someone in the group who can't get their shit together so if you've got an impartial person in charge of getting everyone's shit together it can take some of the stress out of it.
