Has anyone been in Mauritania? Is it worth the visit?
What are the chances of being beheaded?

It's asecret land full of why are you traveling by yourself scams
It's literally just a desert
Beautiful country, really friendly people. I hitchhiked so I spent a lot of time talking to cops at checkpoints. I asked them if AQIM was really active there, they were like "wtf no, is that why tourists have stopped coming here?"
It's not only worth the visit, i 100% plan on returning now that they've lowered the price of the visa.

20% of population are literally slaves. It's official but no one cares. Rumors also say crime is very low there.

When were you there? Any pictures?
I'm planning to visit western Sahara and since I'm there I think it would be worth to get a ride from Dakhla to Mauritania. I'd be alone and it would be pretty much babies first RealTravelerâ„¢ travel, so I'm not sure it's the best idea.

It's well known, also was the last country to legally abolish the slavery..it's somehow interesting
This guy did, talked about it in quite a bit of detail

No photos as I'm traveling atm. If you have the where withal to make it as far as dakhla and if you speak French, there's no reason you couldn't handle Mauri. Western Sahara is so boring it'd be a shame to stop right on the doorstep of the Interesting Sahara.
Google 'looklex mauritania' for good practical info

Yeah camping is fine. Talk to the police and they'll be happy to let you camp behind the police stations. Outside of civilization, just check your boots for scorpions in the morning.

Actually I go camping in north africa every year and I've never seen a single scorpion. Camping there is not as bad as Arabia where you have to brush away the fucking vipers and tarantulas before you pitch your tent.
I'm on a PC now so I can write more:
I went in February 2015. I rode the iron ore train, spent a few days in Terjit getting drunk in the hot spring; I camped in the dunes in Chinguetti for a couple nights burning camel dung and pretending I was Geoffrey Moorehouse, and generally dicked around the north until I ran out of money. If my card had worked in the ATMs I could have taken a camel out to the Richat Structure; that's what I plan to do next time. I was quoted only 150 euro for all-inclusive 5 nights with a guide and camels.
I never left the northern province, so I shouldn't shitpost by saying the entire country is safe. But I always felt safe, and every local I asked said there was nothing dangerous there.
